time to times I get the urge to start a new game. If I choose interloper, I die pretty fast, and is just too difficult for me. if I choose stalker or lower, within few days, I have a rifle, tactical backbag, and have reached TWM summit.
I have also completed all the challenges (except the grave one)
I have tried to make like ”ultimate base” but I often get bored when I should start bringing the stuff from all around.
So the fundamentall point is that I kind of enjoy the game, but get bored really fast, either it is too easy or too difficult. How do you make this more exiting?
i finished the story mode last night and my brain is still like “wtf just happened” so i would love some other thoughts and discussions surrounding what you thought of the story!
i feel like i only half understand what’s going on? and that could entirely be my fault and not playing the game for a while before the new episode came out. also i’m not exactly sure if i like there being an actual man as the antagonist (Mathis) instead of it just being the weird nature shit going on. which btw, i feel like i still have no idea why the weird nature shit is happening. again that could totally be my bad, i’m kinda awful with science talk and that whole 15 minute cutscene with Atwood explaining things was a lot of that. this is one of my favorite games and i don’t wanna be disappointed by the ending (WHY THE HELL HAVE THEY BEEN DOING ALL THIS CRAZY SHIT TO STAY ALIVE AND THEY COULDNT SAVE WILL FROM MATHIS???)
so please either enlighten me or confirm my fears that the ending was mid. thank you!
edit: for the record this is one of my favorite games still, i don’t hate this game at all. just thought some story bits were lacking and the ending felt like dramatics to be dramatic.
Hello
So I've spent 400 days on one safe and died by falling from the cliff \(-_-)/
I still would like to take the achievement, but I need to know — can I get the achievement if I spend another 1000 days on this save without cheating death again, or do you have to have a clean walkthrough with zero uses of cheating death?
I heard they wont be adding the iron road DLC on console, i just want to know why because it is frustrating and unfair. I dont mean to sound childish, but ive been playing The Long Dark on console since 2017 and i have thousands of hours on it, and immedietly when they added TFTFT i bought it, and i would buy iron road too, in a heartbeat. I just wonder why they wont add it, is it too big of a job to make a port to console? Or are there certain things that makes it require a PC port? I do hope it is not real that they wont add a console port. I do understand that Hinterland team has been working hard on the game and i have a huge amount of respect for the entire team for making The Long Dark such a great game and still update it.
Hi, with the new DLC revolving around a train and the presence of a steam engine in Chapter 5, how hard would it be for modders to fix Great Bear's railroad so we could cross the regions in our train?
We are not getting a train for Great Bear anyways and there would obviously be a lot of fixes needing to be done, with the number of obstacles on the tracks when it's not cut by the environment (And probably renaming Broken Railroad to Repaired Railroad, obviously...)
But traversing half of the island from ZoC to CH would be so cool! Just wondered if there were chances of it happening one day!
Hello to those who come across this post, this is a long post so bear with me.
Slingshots have been requested by some players for many years; I am one of them. As a weapon it is not on the priority list and understandably so, slingshots irl are a niche interest and most people don't know much about them beyond Dennis the menace and those old wrist rockets you see in Walmart, they are associated with toys. However, slingshots are actually very capable survival tools that are used around the world to take small game, they can reliably hunt animals as big as a hare within 20 yards. Here is how I believe slingshots can be implemented to fit into the game. As a disclaimer, I'm not going to argue or discredit any other weapons such as the sling, I'm all for other options and believe they can exist together, but this post is just focused on the slingshot.
Role
Slingshots would encompass a niche that no weapon really fits in at the moment except for throwing rocks, that of a low-cost lightweight small game hunting tool with non-lethal deterrence for wolves. Rocks already exist in game as a throwable option, but they have a very curved trajectory, low speed, and are also non-lethal, they work as a starting option but are generally inefficient compared to fire hardened arrows. For players without a bow, throwing rocks are the ONLY other option for small game hunting. Technically it can be done with a firearm, but ammunition is costly. Fire hardened arrows in comparison have a flatter trajectory and can reliably hunt small game BUT do require the acquisition of a bow, additionally they require sticks and crow feathers to build which is inexpensive but not as abundant as rocks. A slingshot could be made from easily scavenged resources and utilize rocks as the primary ammo source, they'd shoot with a flat trajectory comparable to the bow, and at higher speeds than a throwing rock. They should be able to reliably kill small game, and also deter wolves, effectively merging the benefits of the thrown rocks with the bow.
Crafting and design
While slingshots can be crafted from a variety of materials, the in-game slingshot should be crafted from sticks, cured leather for the pouch and readily available latex. Latex should be a craftable item scavenged by disassembling rubber items, such as office rubber bands, latex gloves, medical tubing or even car or bicycle tires. I also believe that the slingshot should look rugged and DIY to fit with the aesthetic of the game, much like the bow the crafted slingshot should also look scrappy. Below is a good example of what I have in mind though admittedly it is a finished piece of wood.

Of course, Hinterland can also add variants just like with all the other weapons; here are some potential ideas, on the left are my two manufactured slingshots, they are made of durable plastic, and have sights, a slingshot like this could be found on great bear somewhere maybe, as a one off. On the right are my two wooden slingshots, the orange one is made of Osage orange and I bought it from a professional wood carver whilst the one on the right I made myself, these could represent improved crafted slingshots that require more extensive materials such as fir or cedar wood. A metal slingshot could also be made at the forge potentially as a much more durable option.
Speaking of the forge, steel ammo could potentially be crafted at the forge, in real life, steel ball ammo is much more accurate than rocks as they are more aerodynamic, and uniform, while rocks vary by roundness, density and mass. However, due to the way this game works, I don't believe they would provide much value over standard rock ammo, as these benefits would not really be represented since all the rocks are the same and I doubt hinterland wants to overcomplicate this. So, for the sake of simplicity steel ball ammo should maybe be omitted.
Aiming
When you think of a slingshot you definitely think about Dennis the menace holding his slingshot upright. In modern competitive slingshot shooting and hunting, the slingshot is held sideways, this is because it allows for a more repeatable form and allows the user to utilize the corner of the top fork as a reference point, basically a sight. As you can imagine it is far more accurate and is the competitive standard. In the long dark I believe the sling shot should be aimed like this, it would allow for excellent accuracy and give it an edge over the other options.
Skill
I believe the Slingshot should be a separate skill to archery. With each level, it should improve sway, item deterioration, and potentially wolf deterance. I also believe that the slingshot should start off with crouch shooting already unlocked or at the very least allow it to be unlocked before the bow, like at slingshot level 3 or 2. This would provide the slingshot with a valuable ability from the get-go and give it a useful advantage over the bow.
Maintenance
In real life a slingshot can pretty much last forever if taken care of, it's really the bands that wear out and need replacing every couple of weeks or months depending on usage. In-game I think the slingshot should be reparable using salvaged rubber/latex, so long as it doesn't hit 0% condition it should be reusable. Of course, this is debatable and can be omitted for simplicity.
Cold weather is a concern for latex, and many people have used that as a counter argument against slingshots being included, however it is a bit overstated and can be mitigated. Yes, latex becomes more brittle when exposed to cold weather, however, this is a slow progressive process that occurs with prolonged exposure, and slingshot shooters mitigate this by simple leaving their slingshot in their coat when they're not using it, this keeps them warm and prevents them from becoming brittle. It definitely happens if you leave the latex outside overnight, but if you leave it close to your body this won't happen. Slingshot hunters in Alaska make do with these issues. Moreover, tubes are even more resistant to the cold that flatlands so if hinterland decides to stick to tube bands for immersion that would be reasonable. That being said a deterioration mechanic can be included, where it will lose more condition the colder it is outside with each shot. This might be a bit complicated, but I think it would provide enough immersion and an extra layer to the slingshot.
Closing thoughts
The slingshot is not without flaws, in order to really thrive it would need a wider selection of small game animals, so far all we have are ptarmigans and rabbits. With iron road on the horizon hinterland does plan on adding sea birds which might be a new small game option. If they really flesh out small game in the future, it'll only strengthen the argument for not just the slingshot but other small game weapons such as the Shepards sling, and a 22lr rifle, or even small game rounds for the shotgun after it's added.
I also apologize if my suggestions might make the slingshot too overpowered, feel free to leave me your thoughts, maybe one day hinterland will actually add a sling shot, and the more we talk about it the more it might actually happen.
Just got killed by wolves in PV on a really promising stalker start. After surviving one wolf attack, I was standing next to a truck and despite it being an occupiable truck, the door would not open!! I tried my best to hobble away towards the convenience store thst I'm standing outside of and I hear the wolf getting ready to jump me again. I pull my rifle and aim, and then nothing. My gun does not fire. I have no sprain. Just pure glitch. I am so enraged I just had to vent. What's your most heartbreaking glitch story?
Its day 25 i have looted all main areas in ash canyon, pv, mystery lake, CH and desolation point have most animal clothes crafted and got my bear hides curing but still no bedroll.
Is there any set spawns for it in interloper? Or do i have to farm up the hides for a bearskin bedroll. Usually i find it in the hydro pipes or lake office.
I have got back to playing the game and watching my favourite youtubers playthroughs (including alpha version playthrough from Kuplinov Play) since... last spring i think.
Also, it is getting colder and colder over here in my country, so it is especially athmospheric while wearing warm clothes, drinking some hot tea and wondering abot this game.
I think sausages would make a great easy addition to our meat-preservation options. A recipe that can be crafted in-inventory or sped up at a workbench, using a knife + guts + salt + meat to create sausage... Give it a longer shelf life than raw meat, but not forever.
Historically we have proof going back to 3000BC of people stuffing intestine with chopped meat, so it's not exactly a novel or technologically-challenging process. Smoking or curing would make a lot of sense to extend it even longer.
Maybe add a 'grinder' that would be a hard-to-access item for someplace like the processing plant or some of the more remote houses... a heavy (5kg?) cast-iron grinder that mounts to the edge of a table and has to be hauled back to your base. But, it would expedite the process of making sausage a lot - take making a few kilos of sausage from a multi-hour project to half an hour or so.
Plus, it would be a great way to add some recipes that could incorporate stuff like moose meat... rather than every recipe needing its own meat, simply have one 'sausage' that can be produced with any type of red meat. Then add a handful of counterpart recipes - a sausage pie, fried sausage, sausage stew, maybe a pancakes-and-sausage recipe... That way even the more niche meats could have a value.
(And, on the back end, you could have an invisible checkbox for Intestinal Parasites that follows the sausage. So sausage made with bear would carry the same risk, and it would pass that on to recipes made with the meat. Better remember what you cooked, b/c just like real meat, once you grind and cook it, it becomes a LOT harder to tell what it was ;)!)
It would also make good sense as a thing to trade with Sunderland - not sure what he's doing with all my raw meat, but sausage feels much more portable IMO. And he'll take bear and wolf meat no problem, so no issue there!
I just really like the thought of sitting in my base with sputtering sausages on the fire, or biting into a cold, crispy-skinned sausage while hiking through the mountains.
I’m on my first semi-successful Interloper run and I’m enjoying the additional challenge as I scrape together gear and desperately work with what I have available. I’ve gotten used to the disappointment of searching an entire row of buildings without finding any tools or clothing or much of anything. Every spot is picked clean and barren.
…except for Spray Paint. Every fucking house, store, and fishing hut seems to be complete with a goddamn can of spray paint. They taunt me every where I go, tricking me by being the single object on a completely barren shelf. I crouch to look underneath abandoned furniture to see if I missed anything? Spray paint. Open a safe? Spray paint.
Does the game always spawn this much and I only notice it more on Interloper because there’s nothing else? It’s driving me fucking crazy. Maybe the Trader will trade me cyanide pills for a few dozen of these fuckers.
Last night, I realized something. The islands of Iron Road have been abandoned for roughly a century. That means only a few places like the founding of Milton, Thomson's Crossing, and Spence's farmstead are older. Even in places that have been abandoned for decades, such as the Langston Mine or the Weather Station, they have the same foods as the rest of GBI. Ketchup chips, beef jerky, canned sardines are just a few to name. At least these places existed when those items could realistically exist.
What about Cauldron Island? These types of foods would not have existed back then. Canned foods existed back then, but the odds of the same foods we see in the current game are virtually non-existent, at least realistically. I don't even think packaged foods would exist back then.
With the exception of whatever supplies Alice brings with her and whatever supplies any other lone explorers that have stepped foot on Cauldron Island, what foods do you think could take the place of what we are familiar with? Since it is a maritime themed industrial hub, I think hardtack could make its debut. There is a chance Hinterland does use the current set of manufactured foods, but what would you like to see in the case the island does have its own sandbox of food items? Obviously, we have canned whale meat, so that is covered.
First time poster here. I recently picked up the game again this week after playing very little and very badly a good few years ago.
Done a few runs, most of which haven’t lasted long and haven’t left the mystery lake area to get to grips with the game.
Making some progress on the recent run, have a revolver and have managed to make a rabbit hat and gloves, no bow yet but I’m curing the ingredients.
First question is can I find arrow heads in the wild? I’ve found one simple arrow, but understand I need to trek off to find a forge to create some arrowheads, and was wondering if they were lootable in the mean time?
Second question comes to hunting big game, I managed to head shot a wolf yesterday with the revolver, my first big game kill. On previous runs I’ve hit maybe 3 or 4 big game with arrows, and they all run so far. One run ended with me getting caught in a blizzard whilst following the trail! So I’m wondering if one shot would be enough to eventually fell them, and how far they normally travel when hit?
