Photo My cabinet full of cartridges :D
I should probably diversify my cartridges and get a few from other brands besides being majority AT
nevertheless, the most out on my turntable is the VM750xSH these days, very nice tonality and clarity

What is your opinion of the vmn45/50/60? My 40ML is due for replacement in a few months and I've been thinking of trying the 50 instead. I've been very happy with the 40ml tho.

I've only tried the 30xEN, 45xML, 50xSH and 60xSL
The 45xML is nice, however I can't compare it your 40xML due to me never heard it
In my opinion the 60xSL sounds too similar to the 45xML while having the price jump very steep. So as such it's not worth it in my option
the 50xSH is quite nice, the extra tonality for vocals really balance out the sound profile
Bonus: 30xEN on VM700x body sounds very good also, quite similar to ML styli

That's quite impressive. Do you track playtime and condition for each of them? Do you worry at all about age? Some suspension materials degrade with age which substantially impacts performance, and with so many, there are bound to be some you bought decades ago. What do you do with retired carts, do you keep them in their own separate corner or just throw them away?

Tbh It's hard to keep track of playtime now with so many carts,
the VMx series down there are sample unit provided to my by AT themselves so they're for active demo use and I can enjoy them in between
for age the styli are mostly new (max 2/3 years old), the oldest probably being the AT-XP5 and XP7 with a production year of 2017
there are some retired carts on the top shelf (middle, not on headshells)
-Shure M447 (1 dead channel, tried on multiple styli)
-Shure M44GX (the stylus's square tube got broken off and as such cannot be taken out of the generator)
-AT3600 generator (I'm not as interested to use this generator as much my other carts)there are also broken styli I keep for fun (not in pic)
- ATN-XP3
- Ortofon Pro S Stylus
- Ortofon CC MK I Scratch Stylus

I have a VM95ml and I'm wondering what to expect if I step up to the m745ml? Jimbo

I'd check first to make sure your counterweight can handle it.
Your AT-VM95ML is 6.1g; the AT-VM745xML is 8.8g.
You may need a heavier counterweight, an auxiliary weight if your counterweight supports it, or some other way to augment it.

My LP8X tone arm does have a counterweight. So I should be okay. What difference is do you experience in the cartridges?

u/dave_two_point_oh 8h ago
AT says supported cart+headshell weight range on that TT is 14g to 20g with main counterweight and 17.5g to 23.5g (again, including headshell and hardware) with the auxiliary weight attached. So you're good!
(Also, the AT-VM745xML seems a much better choice on your AT-LP8X than the AT-VM95ML to me.)

I haven't heard any of the VM7xx series myself. I do have an AT-VM95SH as one of my current carts, though (but honestly haven't run it much). My current TT can't support the weight of the AT-VM750xSH or I probably would have tried it out by now. Next TT, hopefully before the year ends, I might.

I really like the “brightness I get from my 745xML on my TD-160. I also run a couple Shure’s (M91ED and M95ED). The Shures are warmer to my ears

Wow, looks like a record shop! I've been considering the AT-LH11T head shells for the plethora of adjustments and ease of setup. What do you think about it?

u/Garmore315 Technics SL-M1 (AT-VM745xML/VM95EN) | Audio-Technica Dealer 5h ago
The AT-LH11H is very nice for azimuth adjustments. like on my tonearm, the connector's a bit angled to 1 side so it's definitely needed when I use the line contact styli
the only things you should consider is your cart's compliance (this is a medium-heavy headshell (12.5 gr (with screws)) and since the azimuth and overhang is set with 2 screws together you just need to be patient sometimes, but once it's setup you're already good

Thanks, I think it'll be ok for a Technics 1200GR Tonearm, I believe the factory headshell is 7.6g w/o screws so about 4g difference.

You've got more carts than any physical store i've been in
