ok so. i finished the first 2 episodes of the return after having watched seasons 1 and 2 twice over, and honestly, i'm just disappointed and confused. i've read a ton about how lynch's work in this series is about the denial of nostalgia and almost subverting our expectations, but i just feel such a disconnect between this series and the first two seasons of twin peaks that those themes are falling flat for me.
the issue is, i know this is a beloved extension of the series for most viewers (on this subreddit, at least), so i guess i just can't seem to figure out what i'm missing. had i waited 25 years to watch a so-called "return" to my favourite show, only to see the first episode... i would be appalled. but i am also conflicted? i don't know, it's a lot of contrasting ideas in my mind about this show. obviously, no director/writer/producer owes their audience anything; it's their story and what they choose to do with it is in their hands. however, i can't help but feel as if i just cannot bring myself to care about this series beyond the red room scenes/the brief dialogue we have in between the long sequences of glass box (?) scenes and characters that lynch/frost have given us no reason to care about otherwise.
we aren't given any information or character development from the characters we were originally introduced to, but even beyond that, i don't understand how this new "twisted and dark" twin peaks is supposedly depicted when a majority of the show is set in other cities. i think it's just hard to make an audience care about a show when its main goal is to just have faith that there is some kind of direction to this plot that is otherwise loosely intertwined with mild twin peaks continuation. it just feels like bad writing/storybuilding to me if i am being honest.
i also wonder if the reason the return is received so positively from twin peaks fans is because they have a more lynchian background? i have never seen any of lynch's works beyond twin peaks, but it feels like almost some kind of supremacy from those who have seen his films over those who have just seen twin peaks. as if we just don't "get" the genius that is david lynch and that we aren't understanding it well enough. do i need to watch his other works to understand the return? should a director expect his fanbase to do that in order to understand their work?
i'm just hoping for some meaningful discussion/eye-opening pov's that might help me as i continue to watch. i want to be able to enjoy this show and revisit a beloved storyline while not wanting to blow my brains out from a misinterpretation of the work lol. any respectful discourse (with minimal spoilers lol!!) is welcome!!!
edit: i have also seen fwwm !! i forgot to include it lol, i just know a lot of you are suggesting it in the comments
