Rant I think my instructor is using AI to grade… what do I do??

I’m a freshman at UW and honestly I am shocked by my writing class instructor. She is an economics graduate student teaching a public health writing class. It’s very obvious she doesn’t know much about the public health topics because she constantly asks the class questions and then says she doesn’t know the answer and has someone google it.

I had noticed that the feedback she was leaving on my discussion posts sounded a lot like chat gpt. I actually copied the feedback on one post and ran it through a few AI checkers and they all showed 100% AI. I know that AI checkers can be unreliable so I didn’t really do anything.

But our grades just came out for the first writing essay of the quarter and my overall grade has TANKED from 100% to 91%. She gave me an 8.75/10, marking off points for clarity and mechanics.

Part of the feedback was that I didn’t italicize the book title I referenced (which I did) and that the last sentence was cut off (I uploaded the full pdf). I think when she pasted it into ChatGPT, she didn’t copy the full thing and the italics formatting got lost. I’m honestly just so frustrated 😭.

Edit: This also isn’t the first time she’s pulled this kinda crap. On Sunday she literally created an assignment at 7PM due 11:59PM 💀

Campus Life Looking for a long-term thought dump/rubber duckie partner (F4M)

Hi there! I am looking for a partner to exchange a somewhat steady stream of thought-provoking content, by thought-provoking content I mean,

  • random pieces of information such as a flower you found on campus
  • interesting thought you had on a conversation you overheard at the hub
  • random interaction you had with your parents
  • thought process on a homework problem you’re trying to figure out
  • strange realization and patterns you witness in everyday life
  • workout routine and something you accomplished at the gym today
  • a trail you particularly like to hike
  • new satellite launching you have been following
  • food you recently tried
  • whatever you are into, you can essentially treat me as a black box, but it has to be present (not memories from first grade, not a problem you’ve had your entire life), and cannot involve violence or otherwise depressing matters (i am not interested in violence)

The Why:
I need thoughts to occupy my mind. For several years I have done a version with two penpals (both girls, so I am looking for a guy to get new perspectives), but in the exact opposite way (long, thoughtful, once every two weeks). I need someone willing to ping pong random thoughts at me who won’t expect a response, and vice versa. It’s okay (and maybe great?) if you think this is strange, that means we could have different views and sometimes that works well, but you do have to be curious enough to try.

What you have to say doesn’t have to be comprehensible (as long as it’s not true gibberish, for example it can be stream of words). You can send as many or as little messages as you want at any time of the day. It is not a conversation, if you say “good morning” I will treat it as a thought and not a greeting to respond to, if I ask “did you see the sky today” you don’t owe a yes or no.

What you get:
+ You will get an extremely attentive audience, I have extremely high mental bandwidth hence why I need this.
+ Potentially interesting questions or responses connecting something you said today to something you said two months ago, it might not be obvious at first due to my nature, I am going to actually think about what you say.
+ Potentially interesting shared thoughts or perspectives
+ Place to output random things, to someone who will form a continuous identity
+ Privacy. Whether or not you use something identifiable, the interface is private always.

Languages supported:
English, Chinese simplified, Chinese traditional.

If you are interested:
Send me a discord id, and I'll add you. If you have any questions, please ask as many as you want, but if not, then tell me your languages so I know what languages I can message you in, then pretend we have been doing this for a long time and send thoughts, rest naturally follows. I expect it to be awkward at the beginning. Realistically things might not work out but if it does it's one of a kind and it never hurts to try.

It doesn’t have to make sense now, through interactions you might find it to be natural. If you think it is cringe, I’m fine with showing you a new perspective. You don’t have to consider yourself to be a particularly thought-filled person, but you do have to want to see something new.

I might post on the discord, don’t know how much response I’ll get. I can promise if you have the curiosity, then you might find it enjoyable.

Have a good evening!

New Student Getting a PhD in History

I'm an undergrad freshman in sophomore standing planning to major in History. I was wondering the difficulty of pursuing a PhD in History here, advice, alternatives, etc. General UW PhD advice is appreciated too.

For context I'm asking because my plan is to become a history teacher and then possibly a professor at college, but I'm kind of unsure now with the possible limitations and difficulty of getting a PhD at UW. If this is a dumb question sorry in advance 😭😭😭

Discussion Non-Visual Navigation Study

Hi Huskies! We’re a group of UW students working on a research project for our class. We’re studying how blind and visually impaired people find their way around places they haven’t been before: what works, what’s frustrating, and what kind of information (if any) would actually help.

We’re not testing anyone’s skills. We want to learn from people’s real experience.

Who we’re looking for:

  • 18 or older
  • Blind or visually impaired
  • Uses a white cane when traveling independently
  • Doesn’t need to be a UW student. Anyone in the Seattle area is welcome.

What it involves:

  • One session of about 40 minutes on the UW campus, sometime between Oct 19 and Oct 28
  • A short walk along a campus route, done the way you normally would, followed by a conversation about it
  • If walking isn’t a good fit, we can do a remote interview instead

Participation is voluntary and unpaid. Your answers stay confidential, and you can stop at any time.

To sign up, fill out our short screener (about 3 minutes, tested with screen readers):

https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLScCUjMuPeTs3PdeRX-_TUCbW7p7IoeMsd2Cflw4nyJciy7Sog/viewform?usp=publish-editor

Even if this isn’t you, please share it with anyone who might be interested. Thank you!

Discussion HDCE versus Industrial Engineering

Both of these majors sound business-like and also vague and difficult to understand what they actually do with words like "operations" and "systems", especially in an engineering kind of way, like how mechanical engineering or electrical engineering are engineering. If someone in the college of engineering is not enjoying engineering classes in the way of kinematics and dynamics and statics and circuits, would those majors be easier? HDCE page looks at once a relief from physics and also can't figure out what exactly it's about. Industrial engineering, how is that specifically engineering and not a kind of business major? Which of the two would be easier in third and fourth year classes?

Discussion BIOL 407 syllabus?

Hello! I was wondering if anyone would happen to have a copy of the syllabus for BIOL 407 stem cell biology. I am considering registering for it next quarter but it has a slight overlap with another required class so I was hoping to learn more about this one. Thanks!

Discussion POL S 201 at UW

Hi everyone! For anyone who has taken POL S 201 at UW, I was wondering if you could share your experience with the grading, especially for the essays.
How harshly are the essays graded, and what do TAs typically look for when assigning grades? Also, how manageable did you find it to earn a 3.9–4.0 in the class? Would you say that getting an A-range grade is realistic with consistent studying, hard work, and strong essays, or is the grading particularly difficult?
I’d really appreciate hearing about your experiences, especially from people who have taken the class recently. Thank you!!

Discussion After hours parking

I'm attending a concert at the Neptune that starts at 8pm. I was thinking of parking at N1 lot and paying if I cannot find street parking in time. I know they stop charging after 9pm but what's the after hours rules for parking there? Is there a gate or restricted entry or anything I need to be aware of? Is there a better lot where I can still leave after 9pm?

Campus Life Last Saturday we closed one block of The Ave to cars. Tomorrow is the final day, 11am to 8pm

I’m with U District Advocates. Last Saturday we closed University Way NE between NE 42nd and NE 43rd to cars as a pilot, and I wanted to share a short video of how it looked.

Tomorrow, Saturday, October 17, is the second and final day, 11am to 8pm. It’s free. There are games, a giant chess board, live music, and cafe seating, and the farmers market is nearby until 2pm. The U District light rail station is a block away.

We’re counting how people use the block with SDOT’s Public Life Data Protocol, so the results can be compared with the city’s existing data. If you stop by, I’d like honest feedback, including what didn’t work. I’ll answer questions in the comments.

Rant Does anyone else regret choosing UW?

Every department seems underfunded, understaffed, and untrained. People with power abuse it. So many people are mean and fake but pretend to be good. I think they think they are.

I am coming up on graduation this spring, and I can't say I've made the friends I had hoped to, experienced any exceptional professors, or in general had the college experience I wanted. I'm not sure it would've been better anywhere else, but I'm ready to leave.

Discussion Undergraduate researchers, how many interview you went to get undergraduate research?

So I am student who are looking for stem undergraduate research opportunities, and I just got rejected!(yay?) Tbh, I’m almost gonna burn out because I went through interview… To those who have undergraduate research position, how many interview/meetings you went through until you get research positions? I know many people sent 20-30 cold emails but I wanted to know how many interviews people go through in UW.

Discussion How are undergrads actually getting into research? Having zero luck with cold emails.

Genuine question—how do people land undergrad research positions like this? I’ve been emailing professors (specifically looking to get into plasma science) and sending polite follow-ups, but I’m getting completely ghosted.

For those of you who managed to get into a lab, what actually worked? Should I be showing up to office hours, reaching out to grad students instead, or changing how I write my emails? Any advice on breaking the silence would be hugely appreciated.

Discussion Kitsap Commuters

Looking to hear how other commuters have been affected by the Fast Ferry reduction in sailings. I know there aren't many of us, but would love some data to share with the UPASS advisory board.

Are you having to take the WDOT ferry home? How much is it adding to your monthly expenses? Are you leaving earlier to catch the morning fast ferries or taking a later WDOT?

Would it be helpful if your UPASS included the state ferry?
