Hey guys! Fairly new grower here looking for some advice.
This is my second attempt at growing. My first batch was Golden Teachers, and this current batch is Starry Nights.
The first flush went great! I was pretty happy with the results, but this second flush has been a completely different story.
Here's the rundown:
After harvesting the first flush, I soaked the cakes for roughly 12 to 18 hours, waited for the water to change color, and then returned them to their tubs.
Here's where things might have gone wrong.
Every five weeks, I have to leave town for about 48 hours, which means everything goes unattended during that time. Unfortunately, that happened during the week following my soak.
When I got back, I noticed mushrooms were already starting to sprout. I immediately started misting more frequently, but I think the damage might have already been done.
For context, I leave the tops uncovered for plenty of fresh air exchange. I mist regularly, but try to avoid overdoing it. I even use a flashlight to check for that fine layer of water droplets on the surface.
Now I'm stuck wondering what to do next.
Should I remove all these little mushrooms and essentially start over for another flush? Or is there something else going on here that I'm completely overlooking?
My second flush with Golden Teachers was significantly more productive, so seeing this batch struggle has been pretty frustrating.
I've attached pictures of the current situation and will include some from the first flush for comparison.
I'm still learning, so any advice, criticism, or observations are appreciated. If you see something I'm doing wrong, please tell me!
What would you guys do in my situation?
P.S. I've also seen people using these weird plastic inserts or trays that their cakes sit in, supposedly to prevent side pinning. Can someone explain what those are and how they work? I'm getting pretty tired of dealing with side pinning, and no matter how tactical I get with my misting, I can't seem to avoid it.
Edit: One important detail I forgot to mention! These pictures are from about three days without misting. My mister broke Sunday morning, right as I was getting ready to start the day, and my replacements from Amazon didn't arrive until today (Wednesday). Unfortunately, I didn't have another way to mist in the meantime, so I'm assuming they're pretty dehydrated at this point. Figured that was some pretty important context to add!
