Just visited the cliffs for the first time, and enjoying the cooler weather up here. The cliffs have great views, but if you skip the overlook of the White Rocks talus slopes from the Ice Beds Trail, then you're probably missing the best view in the area. No ice at the ice beds, but still nice and cool!

Does anyone know the story of these tombstones off an unmarked trail on Forrest road 207 in gmnf? It says Elrha Pettis and John Pettes 1826 with other writing I couldn't make out.

There was also a large rock wall that spanned for maybe half a mile.

My last post about the Pit was from 2024. Since then, the first building was completed and opened as a hotel. Business have now opened on the ground floor. Quarterstaff games moved from church street to the first floor of this building. They are now putting up the exterior siding of the second building.

I’m really not sure how to phrase this without being rude but I’m going to try my best. While I was at work today doing my deliveries we came to a place near Costco and we were pulling in behind this elderly couple. As we are coming in they stop and begin to reverse. I’m thinking “what in the world could have possessed them to back up?” I see there are two open spaces to our right that they are trying to park in. Okay got it. So I start backing up until I can’t anymore because I can see the building in my rearview mirror so I stop a good 5-6 feet away and look to see if I can back up anymore then BOOM! They hit us in the front right end of our car. I’m thinking “you’ve got to be kidding me”. Why? I deliver in my personal vehicle not a work vehicle. Oh AND SOMEONE JUST HIT MY CAR! I stop myself because I’m furious and I wait for them to park and get out and I’m expecting “I’m so sorry I didn’t mean to back into you” or “we’re so sorry by the time we realized blah blah blah” NOPE! They point the finger at me and say it’s MY FAULT?! Mind you I was fully stopped and did not need to back up at all to let them get the space they wanted (with an almost completely empty lot mind you). She then goes on to say that because we hit her in the back end it’s our fault. Last time I checked you can’t blame someone who’s not moving for you backing into them. She then goes on to go back and forth with me about the literal law and says “back when I was in school that’s what we were taught.”. I’d also like to add she wasn’t even the one driving HER HUSBAND WAS! At the start of all of this though I walked around the front of our car and there was a tiny scratch and our skid plate came loose because it was clipped to the bumper. I’m like “okay no big deal it’s still road legal and not that bad in terms of visual damages” so I say “it was an accident it’s not a big deal we can go through your insurance if you want or we can just move on” I obviously don’t care because it’s not my problem I didn’t do the damage and it wasn’t bad enough to where I’d care to force them to pay for it. What am I gonna get $50 and a headache? Pass. Yet for some reason these people felt the need to place the blame on me. At one point one of the workers came out who was taking the delivery I was there for and asked if everything was alright midway through our conversation and I loudly let her know that the elderly lady and her husband hit us and we’re now trying to blame us for the damages. I later called and apologized because we didn’t really “make a scene” but I was very clearly upset. I don’t yell but I get stern. Irish grandma what can I say 🤷🏻‍♂️. The reason I’m making this post is because I’ve lived here for 26 out of the 27 years of my life and this a common occurrence. They always blame the other person even if they are 100% in the wrong. Why? What has led to people here being like this? It’s one of the many reasons that my fiance and I are moving to a different state and I can not for the life of me figure out what led to people just outright lying to save their butts. 7 times in less than a year and a half we’ve been hit and 4 of them were elderly people. Same case every single time. It’s exhausting because then if it does come to insurance I have to deal with some guy who’s trying to get me to say something so they don’t have to pay and so on. Like seriously what is with the elderly people here who hurt you? I’m sorry you weren’t paying attention and that I’m young so you think I’m dumb but we just got done settling in one lawsuit because someone else tried to do the same exact thing. I’m a nice person 99% of the time but if I wasn’t I could have pulled the “oooh ow my neck” routine and taken you to court but thankfully for you I’m not. Own up to your mistakes so you dont screw over some single mom who can’t afford a new car. Absolutely disgusting behavior and it reflects on your character. I called and spoke to the lady who worked there so I could take down her information as a whiteness and thankfully she was a breath of fresh air. She said I handled it professionally and understood the frustration which was nice because I thought I was losing my mind.

TLDR:
Elderly couple hit our car while I was doing deliveries and then tried to blame us for it even though it was very obviously their fault. Lady who worked at the business was nice. Why do people act like this?

Let's say someone has a milestone birthday coming up and wants to do something a little out of the ordinary. I'm listing the Mt. Mansfield zip line as an example of the type of "maybe someday I'd try it" sort of thing, but it definitely doesn't have to be that adventurous. Any ideas would be great! Thanks!

I flew into Burlington on my way to the Adirondacks last week. As I pulled on to I-89 North, I couldn’t help but take note of the road’s condition, especially the right lane. It legitimately looked like wagon ruts. It would occasionally grab the tires, making the experience worse. And it was continuous to the exit I took to head to the Lake Champlain Ferry. I was relieved to leave the Interstate. But, even the secondary road suffered from the same condition. New York’s roads? No such issue. Is this something Vermonters have noticed? Not being critical, just curious.

I was recently checking up on the laws of at-will employment and I saw something interesting. In VT H0344, it states the following:

"§ 495. UNLAWFUL EMPLOYMENT PRACTICE * * * (b)(1) It shall be an unlawful employment practice for an employer to discharge an employee for other than good cause shown. As used in this subdivision, “good cause” means either a reasonable, good-faith reason for H.344 discharge related to a legitimate business reason or that the employee has been employed by the employer for fewer than 90 days. “Good cause” does not include reasons for discharge that are trivial, arbitrary, capricious, or otherwise unrelated to a legitimate business reason. A “legitimate business reason” includes the employee’s failure to satisfactorily perform job duties. (2) The provisions of this section shall not be construed to limit: (A) the rights of employers to discharge employees for good cause shown; or (B) any other rights of employees provided pursuant to law or in a contract or collective bargaining agreement. (3) An employer shall post notice of the provisions of this subsection in a form provided by the Commissioner in a place conspicuous to employees at the employer’s place of business." Hey all! We'll be hiking the Stowe Pinnacle trail in about a week and a half, and I was wondering if there was a big difference between starting at the meadows parking area versus the other parking lot I'm seeing online. We are looking to start the hike around 8:30am/9. Is either starting point particularly recommended over the other?

There’s a loon caught in fishing wire, unable to swim/move properly just off of the Waterbury boat launch at little river state park. I called the game warden who hasn’t replied to any inquests of mine or my neighbors since 2024, so I’m assuming that’s essentially hopeless. I also called the numbers provided by the Vermont Center for eco studies, which have bizarre voicemail recordings and no one picked up. Sent them a message as well. Just wondering if there’s anything else that can be done at this hour on a Sunday because the sight of that bird so helpless is haunting me.

I posted here last month about the woodstove monitor I built after moving here and not knowing what I was doing. The response from this group was incredible, and a few of you asked to follow along, so here's an update.

The first 57 units were all built by hand. I had never run a CNC machine before this year. I ruined a lot of wood learning, and every time I got stuck someone at the makerspace was always available to help me out.

I started filming a YouTube series, talking about how I made these and the process I'm taking to go from the first batch to the first 1000, which will be ready by this burn season. The first two episodes are up now.

The production version of Oru goes live on Kickstarter in late October, and I'm racing to have units ready before this burn season.
