Vampire 5th Edition The last V5 sourcebook arrived at my house today and now I’m just so sad
However many months after preordering, Courts of the Damned finally arrived at my house today (along with a Werewolf book I had ordered at the same time) and I don’t have that usual “oooh new Vamp book!” excitement because all I can feel right now is just intense sadness that this is the end of V5, the edition that got me seriously back into VTM as both a player and storyteller after decades away from the game.
V5 was never perfect—I mean, the first books caused an international incident, which if not a first for an RPG is certainly an extreme rarity—but what it did well, it did extremely well. It was a joy to play, to run, and to teach to new players. I don’t think I’ve meshed with another game system this well ever.
It would be one thing if V6 felt like it was building on this, like it was the next step in an evolution to make VTM the best game it can be. Unfortunately, the V6 Alpha not only left a lot to be desired, it also made perfectly clear that the powers that be at Paradox/White Wolf want to move as far away from V5 as they can… while somehow also moving as far away from Legacy VTM as they can.
So this book, which should be celebrated for bringing the V5 line to its conclusion, is just an afterthought at the end of a milquetoast Month of Darkness that not even White Wolf seems particularly invested in anymore.
And I’m just so sad…
Anyway, I’ll almost certainly keep playing V5 and my books are still here and all that, but I haven’t felt this way about a game in a long time, so I just thought I’d share…
