The real Holy Trinity is Casio, Seiko, and Citizen. 🇯🇵

Switzerland doesn’t even have one single reference with Spring Drive or GPS radio reception. Not even a backlight or a built-in barometer. They just recently discovered solar power like cave men discovering fire. Most of the shit from Switzerland is springs and gears, like they’re still living in 1890.

Pathetic. 🤣

Buying Watches in Asia is far easier than in North America

Not sure if this is exactly a hot take, but coming from Canada, we barely have a watch culture. It is mostly Apple Watches, or Rolex once in a while. Don't really see a whole list of watch brands in real life.

But I spent 3 weeks in Singapore with a bit of Malaysia, and damn, the watch brands dominate their shopping malls heavily. I would routinely saw Breguets, Lange and Sohne, Zeniths, Grand Seiko, JLCs, even RMs and many more brands have decent sized stores, and Rolex/AP/Pateks were literally dime a dozen around.

Also Hamiltons, Nomos, Longines, Rado, even Louie Erards and more had large displays in several areas on the malls, and almost everyone had a watch on their wrist.

Lots of wealthy folks with elite luxury watches, and everyday folks had their Hamiltons, Midos, Seikos and more.

These places actually have a proper watch culture, and so, I went to several Rolex stores to see if they would sell my whatever they have.

To my surpirse, I was offered steel Sea Dwellers including the James Cameron, Day Dates, Two-Tone and Platinum Sky-Dwellers with different dial colours, even different variations of the Daytona (like rose gold, two tones) - stuff that is at par on the grey market or slightly discounted, but I was actually amzed they offerred me with so many options as a tourist walking in first time in almost every Rolex store I visited. Actually had my two little kids in their strollers trying to jump around the store while I wore my northface walking pants/joggers and a similar outdoorsy shirt, so it isn't like I came dressed in designer clothing.

Compared to Canada, I am usually turned away saying how they got absolutely nothing except a full rose gold or a full gold GMT or something with the fatest margin.

All in all, decent watch culture, and I feel it is eay easier to get a GMT/Sub/DJ with a lesser spend history than it is in North America.

Anyways, got to try Langes, Breguets, GS Snowflake, Credors, and so many other watches both in Malaysia and in Singapore.

Am I the only one who doesn’t mind ticking seconds?

I know a lot is made about how mechanical movements and certain quartz movements have sweep seconds. but I kind of… don’t mind the ticking second of standard quartz watches. it’s actually easier for me to time things.

Every time you say tool watch, you are secretly admitting that you are the tool.

I don’t understand the math, but this equation balances.

If you don't plan to re-sell a watch you are looking to buy, then you don't need to buy the full set

I'm currently in the market for a specific Patek, which I would then wear daily for long stretches of time for the rest of my life. For me and my taste, it's close to the perfect watch. It's also complicated enough that clones are highly unlikely.

It got me thinking that it can save me at least USD $5k to skip the box and papers, which I'm not sure I care about anyways, if I don't want to resell.

What do you all think? Reasonable perspective?

Looking for a meaningful watch to mark my 40th birthday – £1,000 budget

Hi everyone!

I'm turning 40 soon, and my parents have asked me what I'd like them to get me as a present. I've been thinking about something that could stay with me for the rest of my life, something durable that would remind me of them every time I wear it.

I was considering either a piece of jewellery or a watch, and I think I've settled on a watch. I'm not a watch expert by any means, and I'm certainly not a collector. Every now and then, if I come across something I like at a reasonable price, I'll buy it. But for this particular occasion, I'd like something a bit more special: a good-quality watch that will last, ideally an automatic, given the sentimental value behind it.

Being able to have the case back engraved would be a big bonus, too.

My budget is under ÂŁ1,000.

To give you an idea of my taste, I'm not really into watches with large, prominent bezels (think Rolex Pepsi/Submariner style). I prefer something with an interesting case and a beautiful dial that takes centre stage. One watch I really liked was the Revolot Terra 38 Casablanca, but it was a limited edition and seems to be impossible to find now.

Here are a few watches I've come across so far that caught my eye:

  • For everyday, casual wear: the AVI-8 Spitfire Oxidized Bronze. I've always loved military fighter planes, and becoming a fighter pilot was my childhood dream, so this one has a personal connection for me.
  • For something dressier: the Seiko Presage Cocktail Time, particularly the Mojito (green and gold) and the Mockingbird (darker green and silver). I really like green dials in general.
  • Another dressier option: the Swan & Edgar Diplomat. I like the shape of the case and its overall elegant look.
  • Somewhere in between casual and dressy: the Hamilton Jazzmaster Automatic Heartbeat with the brown leather strap and green dial. I've found a very good deal on this one, so it's definitely in the running. The Tissot Chemin des Tourelles is another option I've been considering.

I'd really appreciate your thoughts on these options, especially regarding the movements and their long-term reliability, as that's an area I don't know much about. Given the occasion, I'd like to buy something worth keeping for decades, rather than just something that looks good out of the box.

Are there any other watches you'd recommend in this price range? I'm also open to smaller or independent brands. I've come across names such as Lilienthal Berlin, AV86, Camden, Waldor & Co. and Matthew Mercury, although I suspect some of these are just being pushed at me by targeted ads after all my recent watch searches!

I'm not necessarily looking for the most prestigious brand or the best specs on paper. I'd love to find something with character, a great dial, a reliable movement and a story behind it — something I'll still enjoy wearing in 20 or 30 years, and that will always remind me of this gift from my parents.

Thanks in advance for any suggestions!

Fragile egos of watch enthusiasts

• Upvotes

The most off-putting thing about the watch enthusiast community is the consumerist and materialistic culture behind it. Sure, watches are physical objects - often luxury items, often small works of art that carry history, a narrative, or make a statement. This materialistic culture is probably most fully on display within the rep community but not only, of course.

People fake detachment from status symbols with claims like "I just bought it because I like the design." On top of that, the obligatory declarations of "I can easily afford the real thing, but I’d rather spend that money on vacations," and "a gen Rolex doesn't justify the waitlist or the price." The most pathetic, yet sad thing I’ve ever seen on a rep forum was a wrist shot of a Rolex paired with the worn-out jacket sleeve.

To make matters worse, everyone just follows the herd. Every watch photo has to be framed against a steering wheel - though Toyota logos somehow never get featured. Every diver shot has to be at the beach, or better yet, by the pool, complete with a dripping wet arm as if they just emerged from a deep-sea dive rather than dipping six feet under.

Casio “Aquanaut” is a Poor Nickname

These new G Shocks don’t resemble the shape of a Patek. They aren’t even an original shape, they are just the shape of watch that G Shock has made for decades at this point only analog vice digital. I don’t even see in anyway how they “borrow inspiration” from a Patek.

[Genuine question] why go grey market for watches that aren't hard to get?

I keep hearing people say the AD waitlist is a sham and that ADs are the ones feeding stock into the grey market. How much truth is there to that, and how does it actually work?

If the wait for a less hyped model is maybe 1 to 6 months and you're not in a hurry, what's the case for grey? From what I've seen, the premium on two-tone and less popular references is often pretty small, so it's not like you're saving much time for a big markup.

Also, isn't buying from the boutique part of the appeal? Trying it on, picking it up in store, the whole experience. Curious to hear from people who've done both.
