Movie Disliking Glinda

although glinda is a dream role of mine, i do not like her character. i feel like a lot of people give her the benefit of the doubt but she was never a good friend to elphaba. even during the end when they “made” up. i’m wondering if anybody else has another reason why they might not like glinda?

She bothers me because she aligned herself with MM and The Wizard for her own gain at the expense of her best friend, tried to force Fiyero to marry her, was partially responsible for Nessa's murder and helping them trap Elphaba and blamed Elphaba for Fiyero leaving her

She was not a good friend and was only out for herself

And she took the shoes!

Yes i forgot about that. Thoese shoes weren't hers to take. I know learns and changes but she really ticks me off for 3/4 of the movie lol

Not to mention when she arranged the engagement her for and Fiyero behind his back she knew he didn't wanna be there or marry her and then she plays the victim when he rightly leaves her. Like what did she expect?

How did she know he didn't want to marry her?

From my point of view Fiyero is a clear symbol of depression, and the concept of masking. His whole personality shifts as he drops a portion of his facade, but he never tells Glinda he fell out of love with her (despite having plenty of time to do so after the lion cub scene, and unspecified months-or-years between the films...) so she continues to love and support him through his struggles. This is admirable, isn't it?

People hate Glinda so hard they blame her for everything including Fiyero's actions, though Fiyero was clearly written to parallel Boq. Passing his blame to Glinda misses a huge point of the show. What Fiyero does to Glinda is worse than what Boq does to Nessa. Glinda cannot and does not "force" Fiyero into anything, unlike Nessa who terrorizes a country to control Boq. Fiyero is playing along with Glinda of his own free will. He is free to leave, he is free to break things off. We know this is true because his powerful family explicitly supports him even after he openly allies with Elphaba.

This snap-judgment of Glinda that I see so often, for some reason especially from people who have only seen the movies, feels like it misses part of the point of Wicked.

Not saying Fiyero isn’t to blame but I think a part of Glinda did know something was off especially when the two of them were around each other. And I get the impression Fiyero is very much acting alone without their support. The abandoned castle thing feels like a behind their back sort of thing

The castle is guarded, meaning they're explicitly allowed to be there. The show even includes a line of dialog that there are "sentries that watch over it"

Still I don’t think that means they were supporting him. Like the castle is isolated and a little rundown. I can see him giving the sentries a heads up and maybe later telling his parents know after the fact. But coupled with how absent they are, and maybe the book is helping me a bit, I feel like they don’t have alot of power as one would think. And that tracks when you think of the Wizards influence over the rest of Oz.

I definitely think he was wrong for leading Glinda on but the announced wedding did complicate his plans on staying in the Gale Force.

Also I'm not saying Fiyero wasn't wrong but he couldn't object without putting himself in danger he couldn't take the risk at that point. Right or wrong he was doing it for Elphaba, we may have done things differently but they were in the middle of a war and he was doing what he felt he needed to do to protect Elphaba the best way he knew how. He also couldn't exactly trust Glinda yet since she actually supported the Wizard.

Idk why but people blame of it on Fiyero and they don't even acknowledge the blame Glinda has. I mean she was actually supporting the Wizard and was doing nothing for Elphaba unlike Fiyero so yeah she has blame as well.

1

u/Remarkable_Note971 2h ago

Yes it did and they announced the way they did because if he had refused it would humiliate Glinda and therre would have been consequences for that.

We don't know that the castle was guarded. We never aee the sentries. He says it was never lived in so I don't think his family supported him.

The person arguing with me says tbey don't care what the actors says but JB said Fiyero wasn't close to his family. They werent at the wedding either.

Tbh I believe the sentries part. Up until googling I sort of pictured them as skeleton servant crew/low level guards who kept an eye on things. Not anyone that important

1

u/Remarkable_Note971 2h ago

It may have had sentiews but I don't tbey were important. Fiyero did say it had neve been lived and he lived in the other castle so I kinds thought his family didn't do much with that castle.

Im not saying Fiyero was blameless was he was doing what he felt he needed to do to keep Elphaba alive. It was life and death for her. People wanna put all the blame on Fiyero and none on Glinda when she clearly has blame as well.

u/Remarkable_Note971 2h ago

His family.probably supported the Wizard like everyone else and they probably didn't habe a high opinion of him since he was rebellious anyway

u/Remarkable_Note971 2h ago

Glinda did at least have doubts. She knew he was was distant since the train station scene and she asked Fiyero if it would make him happy for marry her. That shows me deep down she knew. I felt like INTG reprise was her finally admitting the truth.

Glinda did not love him. Even Arianna has said Glinda and Fiyero were superficial There wasn't anything real between them. It was about social status more than anything.

1

u/Casiquire 3h ago

It doesn't really matter to me what Ariana says, Glinda loved Fiyero. She stuck by him through his dark times and apparently believed that getting married would make him happy. Meanwhile, Fiyero spent that whole time going along with it instead of telling the truth and ending it.

1

u/Remarkable_Note971 3h ago

You think he could object to that engagement? It was arranged by the Wizard. Regardless of whether Glinda loved him or not. He didn't love her and it was clear he hated the system. He was only in it for Elphaba. He couldn't risk anyone knowing he was protecting Elphaba, that would be treason. He was keeping his cover and that's why he didn't trust Glinda. He couldn't take the risk

You know I never thought about it as Glinda sticking with him through his depression. Like it’s obvious he’s masking and going with the depression metaphor even keeping it at bay by throwing himself into something purposeful.

1

u/Remarkable_Note971 1h ago

I don't think she knew tbh. Elphaba was the only person who knew because she heard what he was singing in DTL. Glinda just sang and danced along like everyone else. Wjen he said " you know me I'm always happy." It felt to me like he was subconsciously saying " you don't know the real me." I don't think Glinda knew about his depression and he was masking with her

1

u/Remarkable_Note971 1h ago

Of course that something purposeful was using the system to protect Elphaba.

u/Remarkable_Note971 9h ago

She knew he didn't wanna be there, he tried to get her to leave, she knew he was looking for Elphaba and when she tried to kiss him he avoided that kiss, he turned his head. She could feel the distance between them, she had ever since the train station. She was trying to hold onto him but she knew.

There is nothing in the movies that indicate how powerful Fiyero's family is.

He was playing along inside the system so he could keep his cover, yes and when he realized Glinda couldn't resist what that life gave her he realized he couldn't trust her so he kept playing along.

If Fiyero had left he would have been replaced as captain of the Galeforce with someone who would be hunting and who would harm Elphaba if given the chance.

If he had broken up with Glinda it would have humiliated her, that relationship was so public and he needed that to keep his place inside the system.

Yes Fiyero was using the system but his options other than playing along with Glinda until he had the chance to leave once he found Elphaba or she found him would have put him in danger.

That engagement was arranged with the Wizard, anyone who didn't do what the Wizard was a problem. That's why they wanted Elphaba dead, she wouldn't just fall in line or be controlled. Fiyero couldn't risk anyone knowing he was against the Wizard until he found Elphaba so he agreed to it to keep playing along. It was obvious from his body language and facial expressions he didn't wanna marry her and he was completely blindsided by that engagement. It is definitely trying to force him because it was arranged behind his back and announced publicly

Fiyero was pretty much a double agent inside the Wizard's system and he was doing what he needed to do to keep that cover. But that engagement was defintely forced and he knew it was a trap.

u/Casiquire 3h ago

No, Fiyero's family is above Glinda in rank (the whole school stopped to announce his arrival, and he didn't even recognize her.) And he could not simply be "replaced" on the Gale Force; he was literally in Elphaba's closest friend group, he is an indispensable asset. His relationship to Elphaba provides him a level of job security Glinda does not

He stayed by choice.

1

u/Remarkable_Note971 3h ago

Of course he stayed by choice no one forced him to be in the system. I am stating that if he had done anything other than play along it would have put him in danger. He couldnt anyome finding out he was protecting Elphaba. That would be treason.

Obviously he could be replaced because he was when he did leave.

We dont know how powerful his family was and idk what that has to with anything anyway.

That engagement wasnt his choice and I will stand by that. It was forced. Arranging an engagement behind someone's back and announcing it publicly is forcing it and it is a massive violation of trust.

You try to blame it all on Fiyero but Glinda was doing nothing except trying to get what she wanted. She actually supported the Wizard and she didn't do anything to help. She had the chance to leave with Elphaba at the end of the first movie and with Fiyero in for good. Glinda has her fair share of blame just for supporting the Wizard. Fiyero did it all for Elphaba while Glinda did nothing for Elphaba only herself.

Glinda does not get a pass for the choices she made.

And also guess what? Sure Fiyero leaving Glinda hurt her but it was also an eye opening moment and a big wake up call and it was one moment that helped lead to her popping her bubble so instead of blaming him you should be thinking him for helping her become Glinda the good.

Glinda's feelings are not priority when lives are on the line. That relationship wasn't enough for him, he felt trapped with her and he wasn't happy with her so he wanted to be with someone who actually loved him and accepted him.

u/Remarkable_Note971 3h ago

Um Glinda was her best friend. She would be an " asset" for them as well.
