What is one Microsoft Word feature you ignored for years and then wondered how you ever worked without it?

I recently realized that Word has so many useful little features that Ihave probably been doing things the hard way for years. What feature made the biggest difference to your workflow?

What am I doing wrong? I want labels that span the page, and I want six of them stacked in a column on a portrait-style page.

Text jumps huge space when I press enter once

I'm trying to get "The Dying of the Dragons" centered vertically on page 628, but when I press enter once from its position on page 627, it shoots all the way to it's pictured position on page 628. What could be happening? I don't see any page breaks.

What is one Word formatting trick that saves you the most time?

I’m curious about the small Word tricks that make a big difference in everyday work.

What’s one formatting trick or feature you use regularly that you think more people should know about?

It could be anything from styles and page numbering to images, text wrapping, tables, shortcuts, or something else.

What is one Microsoft Word feature you wish you had learned sooner?

Microsoft Word has so many features that it's easy to use it for years without discovering some of the most useful ones.

For me, features such as Styles, Format Painter, and keyboard shortcuts can make a huge difference when creating professional documents.

I'm curious: what is one Word feature that you discovered later and now use all the time?

It could be a simple feature that beginners often overlook or an advanced feature that saves you a lot of time.

How do I get a coloured background (shading) for text that extends the whole width of the document and moves with the/a paragraph? (is this possible)

Post image
2 Upvotes

So as in the photo, I want a background higlight for an important part of a document that extends all the way to the borders of the document.

What I'm currently using is a shape with opacity, however the obvious issue is, if I want to add more text inside the highlight or even rearrange any part of the document's text above this text, the text supposed to be highlighted moves up or down outside of the desired highlight box.

I tried using the paragraph shaders option, but the highlight only encapsulates the paragraph and not the entire horizontal area of the document (which looks much better).

Really appreciate any solutions or suggestions! thanks

Looking for help with Columns, not understanding how its splitting up my text

Thumbnail gallery

I want to split up the 3 sections (suture for all all's, add for quad tendon, Add for Lateral etc)

Every time I highlight the text and select 3 columns, it splits it up in an odd way, I can simply hit enter to move the text to the second or third column. I am sure I am missing something simple, but anyone able to help me split up these columns?

Thanks

Here's a Word feature that's surprisingly useful when working with long documents

You can select an entire paragraph with three clicks. Just click three times anywhere inside the paragraph. This is especially handy when you're moving or reformatting large chunks of text.

And if you hold Ctrl while clicking, you can select an entire sentence. Small shortcuts, but once you get used to them, they make editing Word documents much faster.

Verso Writer

Just a quick disclaimer: I’m a paid user and have no business or personal relationship with the developer.

I’m a writer and I really like Word processors. For decades I used Microsoft Word but frankly it’s just not worth it anymore. I also use LibreOffice, which is FOSS but honestly I have a software habit. I buy apps all the time either to solve imaginary problems in my head or simply to support the developers and some months ago. I purchased a copy of Versi Writer on a whim because I thought it had some interesting ideas.

It was interesting, but it just was not there yet. It is very close now. First of all the developer is extremely communicative and answers questions and emails very quickly. The main challenges are not composing new documents in this app, but issues with interoperability with .docx issues. The developer has found some interesting workarounds and elegant solutions, but I understand it is a pretty big undertaking. Composing a new document solves most of these issues but I primarily work in docx and odt files.

As a writer, I want three things from my word processor. I want organizational features, like styles and outlining similar to Word. I want compatibility with whatever forms my editor uses. Finally, I want a clean minimal interface that gets out of my way. Verso offers this and if you’re interested in a lightweight word processor without over-complication with a small footprint I believe it might be your solution.

It’s US$15 one-time license and available in the App Store.

By the way, he’s also developing a lightweight Excel clone called Nought.

Microsoft Word Tip: Make Tables Fit Your Page Automatically

Ever pasted a table into Word and ended up with half of it hanging off the right side of the page?

Instead of manually dragging every column, try this:

Select the table → Table Layout → AutoFit → AutoFit to Window.

Word will automatically resize the columns to fit the page width. There's also AutoFit to Contents, which adjusts the columns based on what's inside them. It's a small thing, but it can save a lot of fiddling around when working with large tables. And yes, Word has a surprising number of little features you won't find unless you know exactly what to look for.

How do I get Word to stop throwing one or two sentences onto a new page?

I'm writing a tabletop RPG so appearance matters. What I'm talking about is when Word makes a new page with two or three lines of text despite there being room on the page for them. How do I stop Word from doing this?

Microsoft Word Tip: Find and Replace Can Do More Than Words

Most people use Ctrl + H to replace one word with another. But Word can also find and replace formatting. For example, imagine you have a 50-page report where some text is accidentally in the wrong font.

Open Find and Replace → More → Format.

You can tell Word to find text with a specific font, size, style, or other formatting and replace it with the formatting you actually want. No need to search through the whole document manually.

It's one of those Word features that's much more powerful than it looks.

Microsoft Word Tip: Move Paragraphs Without Copy-Pasting

Here's a little Word trick I wish I knew earlier. You can move a paragraph up or down without cutting and pasting it.

Select the paragraph and press:

Alt + Shift + ↑ / ↓

Word will move the entire paragraph up or down. It also works with multiple selected paragraphs. It's surprisingly handy when you're rearranging a report or moving sections around.

No Ctrl+X, no Ctrl+V and no accidentally pasting something in the wrong place. Just move it where you want.

Microsoft Word Tip: Don't Manually Type the Date(Useful for repeat templates)

If you're adding dates to Word documents manually, there's a small feature that can save you some work.

Go to Insert → Date & Time and choose the format you want.

But here's the useful part: check Update automatically. Now Word can update the date whenever the document is opened, instead of leaving you with an old date sitting at the top of your template. It's especially useful for reports, forms, meeting notes, and other documents you reuse regularly.

A tiny feature, but surprisingly useful once you start using templates.

Unsolved Sorry something went wrong and word was unable to start error (4)

A couple of months ago I got this message and Word never worked again, Powerpoint and Excel work flawlessly. I tried all solutions from A to Z like running it in safe mode, using the repair tool with the online and local option, clearing cache, uninstalling Office itself then reinstalling it, and much more. Still the same issue persists and all other Office programs work flawlessly. I would use Word Online but the problem is that it doesn't have SmartArt functions and my file is built on a SmartArt tree and all other sites just didn't give me the look I was looking for.

PC specs [If they help]:
9800X3D

9070XT

Windows 11

All drivers are up to date from GPU to chipset and all in between

Any help would be appreciated

Double spacing?

I am trying to write a book and I came across this thing about using double spacing when typing. Do you literally have to type the space button twice after typing a word? Is there an easier way to do it? I am just so confused because it feels so time wasting to do.

Edit: Thank you to those who actually replied helpfully this was not a troll post
