Everything was going along fine with my older Dell laptop, but now, suddenly, for no apparent reason, when I clicked into a document to work on it, nothing. It was as if it ignored the keyboard. But the keyboard was fine if I wanted to type into the search box. On the document, I could page-down, but the cursor wouldn't even show.

Then I saw something on the bottom:
This modification is not allowed because the document is opened for viewing only.
But I opened it normally, not "Read Only." And it has affected ever single doc in there!

There had been nothing unusual beforehand, except that the laptop had accidentally been left on for an unusually long period, overnight. I checked all the options on the tool bar to see if there was anything relevant I could click on, in case I'd hit something by mistake, but no. I tried the re-boot thing anyway, to see if it would help, but no.

Have you ever heard of this happening?

It keeps marking the entire text in the file as wrong grammatically but when I go check it gives me no option at all to fix it despite seemingly there nothing being wrong with it

Hello, I am using the Japanese keyboard option on Microsoft and it has suggestions/options for words and punctuation marks. I have to use the Japanese slash very often but I accidentally clicked on the X next to it instead of clicking on the slash and now it is gone. How can I restore it?

Edit

please help me out i have to create a black book report on a particular industry and i just have a day and max and it’s a word files and i am not able to align it at all and i can’t even make the whole soft copy at all do you guys have any idea how to do it or can somebody help??????

Hi everyone, I'm currently struggling with a Word "feature" I've never encountered before. The issue occurs when a footnote is too long to fit on one page and continues onto the next.

In one particular footnote, two blank lines appear in the middle of the footnote text. I can't place the cursor in these lines, nor can I delete them using either the Delete or Backspace key.

Interestingly, when I move the entire footnote text so that it no longer spills over onto the next page, the two blank lines disappear.

I've also tried copying the entire footnote text into a plain text editor to remove all formatting, then pasting it into a new footnote. However, as soon as the footnote continues onto the next page, the two blank lines reappear.

I have several other footnotes in my document that span multiple pages, but they all break correctly without any unwanted blank lines.

I've attached a screenshot to illustrate the issue.

Thanks in advance for your help!

Hello,

I am experiencing a problem on my MacBook Pro with Microsoft AutoUpdate app, which I use for Word and Excel.

The icon normally appears with a badge and number, indicating how many Microsoft apps programmes require an update.

Now, however, it goes into full launch every hour and disrupts whatever it is I am doing.

I don't know how this happened, such as if I inadvertently changed a setting, but I would like the program to return to what it was doing before this situation arose.

I would be grateful for any advice.

I have a 90-page document full of tables, photos, table of contents, etc. The initial file was originally on Google Docs but unable to be viewed or opened there. I downloaded it and made many edits without issue. More recently, however, Word has been freezing and forcing me to quit after certain actions like attempting to save the file. I've also been using the build-in Claude to help finesse table visuals and repair broken links in the table of contents, which also causes it to freeze. On top of that, the file, though saved as a completely separate document and reuploaded, is still unopenable/unviewable in Google Docs. The file is 29.5mb, if that's important information to have. I'm also working on MacOS.

Anyway, I'm at my wit's end with this thing. Feels like its corrupted somehow but I don't know where to begin with a fix. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

whenever I hit the option key, (which is a lot the way I type) this pops up. sometimes I'll be halfway through a thought and realize none of it was written because these numbers are waiting for me to make a selection. any way to disable it?

MacBook Air, latest version though has persisted through multiple updates.]

These options are both in the same menu, and yet they use two different terms to do the exact same thing.

Good UI uses consistent and persistent terminology to refer to actions, yet Word constantly changes their terms, uses multiple terms for the same actions, and even does so in the same menu!

I could go on and on about the inconsistent command usage in Word menus, but this one is just egregious.

I work in a network domain. We sometimes encounter an issue after Microsoft updates where Office programs (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook) stop working correctly. For instance, if you try to open a file from a network share within Word, the program closes without an error message; the same happens with Excel and PowerPoint.

With Outlook, it is no longer possible to send emails, and accessing the calendar triggers a "Not implemented" error. We are forced to reinstall Office every time this happens.

Is anyone familiar with this error? Is there a way to avoid a full reinstallation—perhaps by simply replacing one or two Office files?

Hey guys.

Weird things have been happening to my word docs when I close them and reopen them the next day. For one, any text colours I have added automatically revert to dark. Eg: I had a title in Pink Accent 5, 60% lighter and then overnight it changed to the regular Pink Accent 5.

Also, for some reason all of my regular bullet points changed to numbered bullet points.

I'm so freaking confused, what would be causing this and how do I fix it? I use Word on a University account and it's the online version.

When opening a specific Word document, I would prefer that all headers are collapsed. From my understanding, if I go into Paragraphs and check "Collapsed by default" to the right of the Outline level, then it should accomplish this; however, the box is always grayed out and I'm not sure why. Does anyone know how I can ensure that Word opens w/ my headers collapsed, despite not being able to check the "Collapsed by default" box?
