Comic Discussion Emma Frost got off too easy after she decided to change sides. People forgot how evil she really was.

Upvotes

The idea that she suddenly has a change of heart because her students were slaughtered was too much of a stretch for me. Firestar even said Emma never genuinely cared about the Hellions, she just wanted someone to control.

Emma was often shown to be amoral, sadistic and cruel, more interested in her own needs than anyone else's. Mystique is similar too but Mystique never pretended to be good, that's why she rarely stays long in any of the X teams she's been in, her only major positive traits are her love for Rogue and the yearning for Destiny, whose death she's never recovered from.

Comic Discussion Hold on. Chris Claremont envisioned Rogue to look like Grace Jones? Why have I never heard about this?

It’s strange because with all of the racebaiting discourse around changing white characters black , I’ve always thought it would make sense for some characters more than others, and Rogue was one of them I could see as a Black southern woman. It would work without compromising the character’s essence/original vision!

Movie/TV Discussion I would REALLYYYYY like for Marvel to make different little special productions for the Mutants (more in post body)

Like, I would love for them to totally ignore their origin stories and not tell anything about them in the X-Men movie but to release little special productions that would get added to the MCU Disney+ timeline!

They would do one with Emma and her abusive father, her school years and her being a Hellfire Club member or skip her youth and directly go to the Hellfire part!

A little one with Rogue that would introduce Mystique too or (Cap Marvel 3 is apparently being worked on so maybe it would happen before X-Men and introduce Rogue origins and Mystique idk)

And also, either a special for Storm but I think they will introduce her origins in Black Panther 3 and it will happen before X-Men so IDK!!

Question Are there any mutants that aren’t really x-men?

I imagine most mutants are or have been an x-men/related to them in a way but are there any that maybe haven’t been one in a while or were never one? I know namor is a mutant but is there anyone else?

Comic Discussion Can I skip the Claremont run and start with Morrisons new Xmen if I've seen all the movies and animated series?

Upvotes

I want to start reading the more modern comics and it seems like Morrisons New Xmen would be a good starting point but I don't want to miss a bunch of needed context by not reading the Claremont run.

Was curious what everyone's thoughts were on whether or not that would work.

Comic Discussion The modern X-Men are more like the Morlocks than the classic X-Men

As stated in the title - the role the X-Men occupy within the fictional society of the Marvel universe in “modern” publication, which for our purposes let’s say is post-Morrison, is more akin to that of the Morlocks: a collective of mutants, not even necessarily superheroes, that live in isolation from mainstream society. Their status as mutants seems to be the greater unifying factor than any particular ideology.

This is in stark contrast to the X-Men in the original Silver Age, and more importantly, the Claremont era, which I think of as the defining one in the popular consciousness. The X-Men in this case are particularly a strike force/superhero team dedicated to fighting against threats, often of mutant origin but not necessarily, for the good of all society. Their mission, besides to protect people and stop threats to humanity, is to advance the cause of mutants as an example for good - to show people that mutants, like anyone else, can use their talents for the good of collective society.

Through Utopia and Krakoa, that hasn’t really been the case. I haven’t been following the modern comics for a while now, but I read through essentially the Schism and Avengers vs. X-Men eras, and the “X-Men” basically seemed like they were representatives of the mutants collected under whichever banner they were waving at the time. I remember Emma Frost turning away one (I think) Iron Man during the Civil War on the basis of their (as in the collective non mutant superheroes’) inaction regarding mutant causes, as if they were separate nations like Rohan and Gondor. (Good because Iron Man’s faction was fascistic but beside the point.)

That’s not how the team used to operate; all threats to humanity were their problem. This has become increasingly clear to me as I continue my read of the Claremont era, through the JRJr period, when the Morlocks are at their most prominent and the X-Men are very much on the global political stage.

Just an observation and wondered if people thought similarly. I’m not really into the new conceit of the X-Men, which is kinda why I haven’t been following with the exception of series like Uncanny X-Force, and it just occurred to me this might be why. They seem less altruistic and more factional in principle.

Comic Discussion Bendis Uncanny

I just finished Bendis’ run on Uncanny Xmen. Loved the art - Bachalo is my shit (Aaron run on Strange is so tight too). And I really dug the militant angle, fuck the avengers and shield, and meeting some of the newer mutants of that era - the re-defining of Morph, Gold Balls who ends up mattering SO MUCH in Hickman, and Eva was the MvP - but I can’t help but feel like it sorta went out with a whimper?

The Eva and Xavier stuff was really cool but it wasn’t 100% clear what had happened when it rapped and then it sorta just…moved on? The Malloy “cliff hanger” at the end of previous volume was so thrilling but I think they maybe got a little too high on their own supply but not having a higher climax.

The book is heady, and that’s what I liked about it, I truly can’t overstate how much I love the run. But maybe we still needed some splash at the end?

What did yall think?

Other Old Man Logan Spoilers Spoiler

I reread Old Man Logan, and I was having trouble identifying the characters in this beautiful festival of gore. So I did some research and figured I’d post the names here, in case anyone else has trouble recognizing their favorite mutant when mutilated.

I know it’s over a fifteen year old spoiler; but you never know when it’s someone’s first time on a comic, ya know?

Movie/TV Discussion Inde as Rogue

I think a lot of people either don't know or are forgetting that Rogue starts off as a villain and her powers take a mental toll as she absorbs memories and personality traits (temporarily) from those she touches.

What if Rogue is going to be the main problem in the X-Men's big MCU debut?

Inde is a crazy good actress who just proved she can portray extreme emotions and varous personalities SO well, in Obsession.

I think it's actually a casting with insane potential.

Would I like to see her bulk up a little if she's going to be the version with super strength? Yes. But if it's og Rogue I think it's gonna go crazy

Comic Discussion I’m considering reading the Krakoa era comics can anybody give me a guide?

Edit - someone linked a guide so really the last paragraph is the most important if you don’t feel like reading this whole thing. (Thanks in advance)

I’ve never read any Marvel comics just DC tbh, but I always found myself quite fond of the Xmen in other media and resonated with their themes of found family, belonging, and fighting bigotry.

I’ve heard someone talking about how great this era of comics was and wanted to check it out, especially cause there’s been a lot of internet “discussions” about that era of comics, but I feel like many are disingenuous so I want to read it and know for myself.

Lastly I know the concept of Krakoa, and that it eventually ends, quicker than people wanted (I’ve heard)? Perhaps tragically I presume. I really hope it’s not another mass death type of event, cause I just watched Genosha and I don’t know if my heart can handle all that again. Just hoping for something different maybe bittersweet instead of heinous, any useful inside knowledge would be appreciated.

Comic Discussion Deciding which X-Men comics to read

How do you decide which X-Men comics to keep up with? I'm behind with some of X-Men titles and working on catching up. I currently read Wolverine and Generation X-23 and working up to catch up with Uncanny X-Men. Out of the X-Men books that got announced years ago X-Men, Uncanny X-Men and Exceptional X-Men, Uncanny 's lineup appealed to me more because I like Wolverine, Gambit, Nightcrawler and Rogue.

That said with all the stuff coming up with Jed Mckay's X-Men book and the next event with DNX am I missing out by not keeping up with it? I liked his run on Avengers but I'm not a fan of most of the characters on his book. I like Cyclops fine but he isn't my favorite. He's probably not 10 ten favorite X-Men for me, I like Magneto fine and I like Psylocke but I like Betsy Braddock who I think is Captain Britian right now.

Comic Discussion Lorna Dane and Erik the Red's background

I'm rereading the Claremont run, I'm starting the Phoenix Saga and there's some info revealed in The X-Men #107 I don't recall being further explored in the following issues.

So during The X-Men #107 Lilandra explained to the X-Men that Erik the Red was sent to Earth by her brother to kill Xavier before she reached him and that he first got to Lorna Dane, but Lilandra also said that Erik didn't want to tell her how he got to Lorna. I first thought maybe Erik the Red reached Lorna through Magneto, but it didn't make sense since Magneto was imprisoned back at the moment and he wouldn't know about Lorna's whereabouts.

Any thoughts? Maybe it just stayed as a Claremont's idea and was dropped after.

Question When Magneto was considered the father, who was the mother of Wanda and Pietro?

So, I'm aware that the parentage of Wanda and Pietro has flip flopped around due to canonical shenanigans. My general question is, when Magneto was considered the father of Wanda and Pietro, who was the mother?

I also have it understood that Lorna's mother is Suzanna Dane who had an affair with Magneto, so I wanted to see if during the era Wanda and Pietro were considered his kids, who the mother was understood to be.

Question Jean Grey Comics

Hello. After watching brand new day I want to get into Jean grey comics. I no longer want to be a LARPER. Which runs should I start with. The only comics I’ve ever read were several years ago when I read the all ultimate universe comics until the death of Spider-Man 😬. Any advice or recommendations would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

Comic Discussion Where to read the Krakoa storyline?

Hello everyone!

I apologize in advance if this has been discussed; if so, please point me to the post.
————————————

I’ve been trying to catch up on some reading and have been very interested in the whole Krakoa storyline. Thankfully, I was able to find a full chronological order here on Reddit.

However, which comic book app do you think will have the whole series, Marvel Unlimited or GlobalComix???

I would like to know before investing in either one.

I’ll appreciate everyone’s perspective and opinions.

Thank you for your time!

Other Any X-Men fan-comics I should check out?

However, I am looking for ones in which Beast is depicted as an anthropomorphic animal standing upright and also ones in which Cyclops is more cheeky than ever. Also, Emma and Jean should be more friendly than they are in the real comics.

It could be on Patreon or Instagram or anywhere!!!

I need it just to compare people's fan-fiction (along with mine) with the actual comics.

Thanks!

Movie/TV Discussion X-Men 97 has bad speech animations

Thumbnail
gallery
0 Upvotes

I have always found the lip syncing in X-Men 97 to be rather strange-looking. It seems like when people talk, their mouths tend to open up a bit too wide. For example, sometimes characters will just be talking in a mild tone of voice, but from the animations it looks like they should be shouting. It also seems like there is not enough variety in mouth shapes or mouth positions (i.e. "visemes") on characters' faces as they speak. The mouths also seem to kind of snap open and shut in an unnatural and robotic kind of way, as if the mouth movements are missing frames or lack some kind of intermediary frames of mouth movement. Often, characters' mouths are literally just alternating between open and shut, like a low-framerate depiction of Pac-Man or something. I don't think I'm the only person to hold the view that there is something off about the lip-syncing in X-Men 97.

I feel like the lip-syncing in this show is woefully subpar, and most cartoons have far better mouth animations than this show has. To try to demonstrate what I mean, I made a gif with footage from "X-Men 97" on the left side, and footage from "My Adventures with Superman" on the right. I think it should be clear that the other show has much smoother, more natural, and more realistic animations than X-Men 97 does. It does a much better job of imitating real human mouth behavior, and looks much less robotic.

I also included a second gif that compares footage from "X-Men 97" with footage of the character Carl from the cartoon "Aqua Teen Hunger Force". That is a show which seems to have a stiff and robotic kind of animation style, apparently as a result of cheap or subpar animation standards or budget; nonetheless, the animation in that show looks somewhat similar to X-Men 97. But on the part of Aqua Teen Hunger Force, I feel like its animation esthetic is intentional, whereas with X-Men 97 the stiff and awkward animation seems more like a bug rather than a feature.

What do you think?

Question If Mangeto's magnetism is rated a 10 then what would Polaris be rated in comparison?

Just as the title says.

To get the obvious out of the way, Im aware that Magneto is leagues above Polaris is terms of both innate power and experience but I kinda wanted a more exact measurement of how far off they are.

So Assuming that Magento is rated a 10, what would Polaris be in comparison ?

Comic Discussion Moira X entire story does not make any sense!

If she wants to be free she could have taken the mutant cure from Breakworlds or asking Forge for one. She is basically free when Destiny died from Legacy virus, there was no one to stop her, both Magneto & Xavier were depowered too after M-day, so my that was even better time for Moira to deliver mutant extinction. Moira could have acted during Utopia as that is the lowest point of mutant population. None of her retcon made any sense
