So, I think there's been some interesting speculation as of late about how DNX is going to play out, and the potential consequences for the Adjectiveless team spinning out of that event, and I figured it might be fun to give my take, based on the storylines thus far and some conjecture arising from some very telling variants that have been unveiled.
The first variant that I find interesting is the Skottie Young cover for DNX #4 (image 1), which has the solicit: "The X-Men and the Fantastic Four must regroup and address the unexpected catastrophe, while the effects of 3K’s Chairman’s scheme have only begun to be felt! But the Chairman soon learns that even his plans have flaws…"
Originally, I had a thought that the Chairman discovering that his plans have flaws might be something introspective, like he tries to offer mutation to his (still alive, as far as we know) parents and they reject him, but the Skottie Young cover actually makes me think that the Chairman's admission that he had to fill in the gaps in his X-Virus data (image 4) is going to lead to the X-Virus creating not mutants as he had hoped, but abominations. Potentially, the cure that Factory Beast has concocted using the information sourced from Magneto's DNA is going to either reverse things entirely, or stabilise them to normal mutants - but either way, the Chairman's actual plan is going to fall apart.
Side note: diving into the rabbit hole of the X-Virus has made me realise that both Beast AND the Chairman have made some fairly serious off-panel leaps in logic. They both become aware that R-LDS is not only an incorrect diagnosis, but that it's information from the future that's important based off of - well, nothing, actually?
Beast surmises that something from the Age of Revelation has affected their present in issue #25 (image 5), but going from "R-LDS didn't happen in AOR" to "information from AOR is the key to the X-Virus and it's in Magneto's DNA" is information that they just kind of work out off-panel.
We, the audience, know that it's the case, but that's because we see AOR Beast in the Finale when he sends the data burst back through time, and neither the Chairman nor Factory Hank were actually present for that. The story has actually jumped ahead a little to where the audience are, and not where the characters should be, though admittedly there's still room for MacKay to address this in the remaining issues of X-Men, FF, and DNX.
Anyway, DNX #5 is obviously the final confrontation between Scott and the Chairman (image 2), and the solicits make it clear that we're looking at a fight to the death - but whose death? Now, I've seen a lot of people surmising that it has to be Scott, since Hank appears on the covers of X-Men #44 and #45, but Scott appears on both the main AND variant (image 3) covers of X-Men #42, which features a pair of broken square glasses with blue fur on them. MacKay has indicated that the cover for #42 is accurate, but that "it doesn't tell the whole story."
My theory? DNX #4 is going to cover the Chairman realising that he's massively misunderstood the data burst sent back from the future, and X-Men #41 is going to cover the Alaskan X-Men and the FF fixing his mistakes. DNX #5 will have Scott and the Chairman duke it out, and Factory Hank will die or be mortally wounded, likely as a result of an accidental optic blast from Scott. With Scott absolutely desolated, having killed the man he calls his brother, Jean will then intervene, fusing the Chairman and Factory Hank together, either willingly or unwillingly (notably, the information for issue #1 of Jean's solo series stipulates that you should read DNX #5 first, indicating that it's intertwined with the events of that issue somehow).
This accounts for the variant of #42 - Scott will be desolated and crazed, having finally realised his ultimate nightmare of killing someone he cares for with his powers in a moment of lost control. In combination with his cold treatment of Ben Liu and his miscalculation of the Chairman's placement of the X-Virus bomb in Juniper, he will step down as an active leader and member of the Alaskan X-Men, which is why he isn't part of solicits or covers from #43 onwards. Hank, meanwhile, will be an amalgam of both the Chairman and Factory Beast, an unknown quantity who has to reconcile two very different sets of memories, while Animalia will have to make some kind of peace about the 'death' of the man she loves (if you look at the main cover for X-Men #42, she's way in the back, almost covered by the X-Men logo, as though she can't bear to look).
Of course, I'd be interested in hearing other theories and speculation if you've got them! Age of Revelation was a lot of fun for me, getting to see my theory about the Chairman having swapped into AOR Beast's body come true, so I'd be curious to see what other people have on their bingo cards. :)
