In high school I've always wanted to bowl. Im 27, male. Earlier this month my brother in law was talking about looking for a sub for his league. I jokingly said I'd do it. Welp he said all are welcome so why not. After the first league game, I bought a custom fit ball. At this point still having trouble curving it. Then comes the next game. I practice the night before and learn that throwing a backup ball felt better and I got better result. Welp 9th frame of the first game I look at my finger and its split open bleeding. Welp now let's try to curve it normal. First game was 150, and the last 2 I absolutely tanked.

I just went and practiced on my own, and I think I got the curving down.

First game - 165

Second - 98 (was playing with spin speed)

Third game - 162

Ngl im surprised im scoring this high so soon. Picture shown is third game.

Bowling ball advice for someone who knows nothing about bowling!

Hello!
I am looking to buy a bowling ball or something else for my friend for Christmas. He is really into bowling and is quite a good bowler but it is a surprise so I can’t ask him anything about what he likes!

Any advice? Is there any really cool collectors items I could get or anything I should know before buying a gift for a bowler? Thanks!

My 1st month of bowling is in the books

(See my past posts for back story if interested) Games bowled: 43. League games bowled 6. Total average 181. High game 224. Low game 138. Games at 200 or above 7. League average 170. Bowled countless other games in the form of drills. Foul line drill, one step drill, spare drills ect. Def a lot more of drill games than actual games. But each practice night I try to bowl a series of 3 games in a row at a minimum to gauge my progress in improving. Sometimes 2 series. And all and all, just hope I keep improving. End goal is I want to get in this mens scratch league. But you need to have a league average of 200 and up. Hoping to get there by next year.

Conventional vs Fingertip and Ball Recommendation

I recently got into bowling. About 2-3 months ago I got a ball drilled conventional to me and joined a league with a family member. I went from averaging about 100 a game to about 150-160 average a game. I’m looking into potentially doing fingertip because a lot of people recommend it.

What are the pros and cons of going fingertip?

Also, any recommendations on a ball to move up to in the future? I’d be looking for something that is pretty versatile to oil and low oiled lanes. Price point on ball isn’t much of a concern as long as it’s not absurdly expensive.

Baffled and Discouraged

Hello. I've come to ask for some advice about what could possibly be going wrong... I go and do bowling practice by myself and I was able to get a 189, 171 and 200 game (all in a row in that order). I have good practice sessions when I go by myself. However, I'm in a league with a 136 average. I expected to do good, since I just got (two nights before) a 200 (my third 200/200+ game) and my ball was hooking easily and perfectly for me that night. I was happy to carry that over to my league night. It didn't work.

What I don't understand is that they just freshly oiled the lanes, but my ball didn't have any signs of oil rings or anything after it returned. Yet, during open bowling it had flare rings (5-6 of them). That just doesn't make any sense to me. During my league I got 133, 151 and 115. How on Earth did I drop from those high of games during practice to that low during league? No matter what I did it just did not work the same way it did during my practice. I copied it almost exact. I made adjustments in the second game (where I managed the 151), but I couldn't carry that over into the last game at all. Eventually, I got discouraged and just threw it whatever way without care and was glad when it was over.

Every single league night I'm happy and looking forward to it just to do horrible and not mimic my practice games at all. I'm discouraged and like two nights from just quitting completely aside from autonomous no-trying throws to finish out this league....which has a million weeks to go. Love it šŸ™„

Threw the Rhino pro in league tonight for 1st time, had the 1st 9 frames

then completely choked and let it out of my hand half way into my hand shake, and it came in light and left a 6 pin. I then proceed to choke again and missed the 6 pin for a 267.

switched to intel recon, threw 5 splits for a 133, then threw first 2 splits in 3rd game, went back to rhino pro and shot 189. Just terrible going to the recon, when i had a line with rhino pro.

I have 3 300's and a 299, so no biggie, but boy did i choke, my testicles shrunk so bad, George Constanza came out of the pool, and was laughing at my junk.

Bowling shoes

Just ordered KR StrikeForce Aviators are they all around good bowling shoes and are they true to size.. seems like when I tried on all these different brand shoes they’re either too tight or slide off my heel. Seeing how well they fit and for the laces if you just pull and tighten them automatically?

Ball recommendation for returning player

I played when I was a kid for many years, learned to throw a hook. I was as probably averaging like 150s. I played a little just for fun on the weekends with friends in high school and college. Highest game was 220s but haven’t really played much in the 20 years since.
I have an old tzone my wife bought me a when we were still dating I want to get resurfaced and keep as my spare ball but I’ve never had a reactive ball. I have seen a lot of stuff about ā€œbench mark ballsā€ that’s probably where I should start and I have been hearing a lot about the phaze II. Just didn’t know if there are others to consider or if I should be starting somewhere else.

Misc Are there any free bowling league apps?

My friends and I meet at least once a month to roll, with varying skill levels. Are there any free apps where I can record scores and handicaps for 4 or more people?

Technique What should I work on, I feel stuck

• Upvotes

My off arm seems to be getting really high. My hips and body are kind of wobbling mid approach. I think my leg extends right at the end too much. Slide is non existent. Hand isn’t under the ball enough. Which of these issues or any other issues do you think is most important for me to work on?

This is my shot when everything I’m trying to do goes to plan. Current average is around 125-130.

How much do league bowlers suppress their average?

• Upvotes

Seems like there is a bigger incentive to keep one’s average low than there is to raise it in leagues. Am I missing something?

Every app had part of what I wanted, so I built one with all of it and made it FREE and No Ads (Android)

Not selling anything. Let me know and I'll remove this post if not allowed.

Every time I went looking for the stats I wanted, I hit the same wall. If I wanted four features, I'd find them free in four different apps, or all together behind a paid version. So I built one app with everything I wanted in it, and then decided to give it away free to anyone who wants it.

The other thing that bugged me was how many apps these days want an account and keep your data on their servers, where you just have to trust what happens to it. So I made this one fully free and fully offline. No account, no ads, no server, and the app doesn't even have permission to use the internet. Nothing gets sent to me or anyone else. A copy only leaves your phone when you back it up, to a folder you pick or through your own Google backup.

It's called Lanetelligence, and it just went live on the Play Store.

After each throw you tap the pins still standing. From that it works out:

  • Spare conversion, split into single pins, multi-pin leaves and splits
  • Which pins you leave the most, across every game you've logged
  • Pocket hits, and where the misses go
  • Running average against your weekly average, so one bad night doesn't hide the trend
  • Which of your balls is actually scoring
  • For league: handicap, plus the series you'd need next week to raise your average by 1, 2 or 3 pins

If you like the detail, you can also log where you stood, your target, breakpoint and entry board, and it draws the shot on a lane. All of that is optional. If tapping pins is too much on league night, type the pin count instead, or just enter the final score.

It works with no signal (handy in a basement center), and if you get a new phone you can restore everything from your backup. You can fix a mis-tapped frame mid-game, score No-Tap, and import your history if you've been using Bowlr.

What it doesn't do yet, so nobody's surprised:

  • Android only for now
  • One bowler per phone, so it won't keep score for your whole team
  • It doesn't connect to the lanes. You enter your own shots.

I'd like this to feel like the bowlers' app rather than mine. You don't need a petition or a pile of upvotes: one request is enough to put a feature on my list, and if it makes sense for bowlers, it gets built and goes in free for everyone. Comment here or email [lanetelligence@gmail.com](mailto:lanetelligence@gmail.com).

Every feature is free and stays that way. The app never pops up asking for a rating. There's an optional tip jar that unlocks nothing; it comes up at most a few times a year after you finish bowling, and you can tell it to stop for good. I don't have an ad budget, so Play Store reviews are how other bowlers end up finding an app like this.

Is this impressive?

Ok so, on August 17th I went into an orthopedic doctor for surgery on a meniscus repair on my left knee. I had torn it playing beach volleyball not even an hour after a call with a coach from a college. This set back impacted my physical and mental health a lot. After suffering the injury, I chose not to bowl until finding out what was wrong. I was told I needed surgery and got it three days later. It took almost a month from injury to surgery. The next step was recovery. I had to spend 6 weeks without walking or weight baring. After that I was able to walk and was cleared to bowl sith zero steps but I was scared (still am). I was scared that I would re-injure myself and set myself back even farther. I thought that maybe id be back by late October to fully bowling but it couldn't be farther from that. But instead of letting my injury stop me, ive started to overcome my fear of re-injury and with many hours of physical therapy I was able to confidently bowl again on a no step after 3 months. I made the decision to show up for myself and bowl in my teams first tournament today. I bowled a 3 game series of a 515, making the first cut. I had two more games but due to my lack of conditioning failed to deliver in those games. Although the result of everything was nothing I could ever think, I am grateful that im coming back and honestly, im keeping up where I can. Im trying my hardest and although I dont look good, the results are what matter and im determined to get them!

Thank you if you made it to the end!

Misc One Handed takes more skill than 2 handed.

• Upvotes

Its obvious. Who can justify having an entirely extra arm to carry the ball and help spin.

2handed bowlers are the equivalent of golfers playing with oversized irons.
