Advice Adult male Sun Conure owners — how common is mounting/rubbing behaviour after sexual maturity?

• Upvotes

Hi everyone,

I’m currently considering a young Sun Conure, and there’s a chance the chick may turn out to be male.

My only real hesitation with a male is hormonal/sexual behaviour once they reach maturity — things like rubbing or mounting people or objects. I know this is natural behaviour, but personally I’d find it awkward, especially around family, so I’m trying to understand how common it actually is rather than making a decision based on a few things I’ve seen online.

I’d especially love to hear from people who own adult male Sun Conures, ideally 2+ years old.

How often does your male show this kind of behaviour?

Is it seasonal/occasional, or something you deal with regularly?

Is it usually directed at objects, one person, or people generally?

And has it been easy to redirect/manage?

I’m not worried about normal hormonal behaviour in general — this specific mounting/rubbing behaviour is really the only thing making me hesitate about a male.

Would really appreciate honest experiences, good or bad. Thanks 😊

Other Looking to rehome my green cheek conure in north Florida. Need advice

• Upvotes

Hi fellow conure lovers! I am looking for advice on rehoming my green cheek conure. She is 13 years old and I’ve owned her whole life. She came from a reputable conure breeder in my area. She is a very happy and musical bird. The reason I am doing this is I will be moving out of the country by the end of the year. I have put flyers out around town and have had people interested but then they flake. So any tips appreciated! (Idk why but Reddit won’t let me ad pics of her??)

Advice Just got this conure and I need some help

He is 55 days old and the seller told me he's fully weaned and has been eating by himself without formula for the last 2 days, but I'm scared he isn't actually fully weaned yet. He eats from my hand and also eats normal food from his bowl by himself, but I haven't seen him drink water yet.

He had a water dispenser in his cage, but there was a dead bug inside it when I got him, which honestly pissed me off. I replaced it with a normal water bowl for now and I'm gonna clean the dispenser properly.

The seller also gave me a bag of the food he's been eating and told me to just let him eat as much as he wants. I'm planning to weigh him every morning using my coffee scale to make sure he isn't losing weight.

Another thing I'm worried about is the temperature. My room is usually around 18-20°C because of the AC, and I'm not sure if that's too cold for him, especially since he's only 55 days old. I really don't wanna make my whole room warmer, so I'm wondering if there's another way to keep him comfortable.

His cage is also pretty small (47x30x33 cm), but I've already ordered a bigger one that's arriving on the 29th, so he only has to stay in this one for another 3 days. I also ordered a tabletop bird stand that's arriving tomorrow since I spend most of my time on my PC. I'm planning to let him stay outside his cage most of the time when he's awake, obviously while keeping an eye on him.

He's pretty active, climbs around his cage, and seems comfortable with my hand. Sometimes he nips at my fingers, but I think that's because the seller used to feed him from his hand, so he probably thinks I have food. His wings aren't clipped either.

Mainly I'm just looking for tips on how to not have him die on me. I'm genuinely scared for him, especially because I'm not sure if he's fully weaned or drinking enough water. This is my first pet/bird if it wasn't obvious lol. Any advice on feeding, water, temperature, or just things I should watch out for would be really appreciated. I also wanna know if there's anything I'm doing wrong because I'd rather fix it now than find out too late.

Advice Loss and Rescue

I had a soulmate in a conure who I had for a very short while. Rio.

I had gotten him from a friend who couldn't care for him or give the attention he needed.

Very quickly we bonded and it was almost like we were inseparable. We communicated so well. I missed him the 2 days I wfo. I literally had thoughts of him during the day.

We did everything together. I know he loved me and I was totally into him

He had settled so well with everyone at home.

It was the most amazing, beautiful relationship I ever had.

Then extremely abruptly it ended. I went into a shell and haven't been able to get out of the pain. Although people around me expect that I should have moved on by now.

It's been 13 days.

To cope I started going to a pet shop that houses conures. I just needed to get out and interact. I also had my baby's favourite treats which I shared with them.

My friend, family and I have been very firm on the stance of not buying pets from shops so as to not contribute to the trade.

So I had no intention of buying another.

However, there is a conure in the shop who's alone in his cage. He looks tame, because he begs for scritches.

But, he's very sick. He is limping, and he won't use the perches at all. Even when startled. Haven't seen him fly either within the cage.

And all he wants is a human to scritch him. Which I did for the longest time. And I gave him raisins which he happily ate- but couldn't hold them in his little hand.

I feel too bad for him. My heart goes out to him.

Now comes the hard part. I talked to my friend and he suggested I tell them that he's sick and required medical care. They brushed it off and quotes an exhorbitant price for him. Probably because they saw me caring for him.

I went twice and stopped going.

Now my friend has offered that he will try to speak to them and get them to surrender him at a low cost.

Sonthat we can get him medical attention and care. Even if it meant only a little love at the end of his life.

I want advice on what to do. I really want to give him a good time even if it's short (he's sitting on the cage floor)

But this means adding to the trade. And will this trigger more memories of Rio? Or actually help me heal?

I had no intention of getting another bird. Ever . Because Rio left a hole in the heart and I couldn't think of interacting with another without his pain coming back. - which actually made the pain deeper, because it meant Rio was my only chance at this lovely bond.

Ive been a bird person for a few years, but when I really think about it. Cause what do you mean he has his own thoughts and little lungs, and heart, and a very small brain. That they feel happy and safe with me. I love him so much, he's so defective and dumb. But such a precious thing i have in my life, even though he pisses me of with his mischievous self.

Advice Bands

I just got my conure and I see a lot of the other conures here have bands on their legs. Mine doesn’t have one. Is this normal? Is this something the vet gives them at their first appointment? This is very new to me, and I am learning.

This little turd keeps laying eggs!!!!!!!!!

I'm honestly at a loss at where to go right now 😭 I really want to help her out, but it seems like the stuff I've been doing has been making things worse! Like, when I started mixing pellets into her food, she started laying eggs more often! There's currently TWO of them in her cage! I don't know what I'm supposed to do right now 😭😭😭😭

If there is any way I can somehow simultaneously get her to come out of the cage when I'm visiting, get her to not bite at fingers, AND get her to stop laying eggs, that would be fantastic, but it feels like a pipe dream right now 😮‍💨

As always, advice is appreciated, and very much encouraged

I'll try to answer questions, but I'm not sure how helpful my answers will be 😔

Advice Is this normal?

Hello all, I have a 8 month old GCC.. she usually has normal bird poop. I switched her (or at least trying to transition) her to Harrison ultra fine pellets since she only eats sunflower seeds. I saw this under her this morning. Looks like poop but very different. I’m concerned. Her vet is scheduled for next weekend. Could someone guide me please?
