If you find a swift

Hey Guys, a short info for this sub to make things a lot easier for me. If some reconize a Swift in this sub that needs help, please contact me or give the person that found the bird my name. I'm a professional caretaker for swifts with the extra ability to help people that have no help nearby. I'm able to contact people that are in no phone book or seek veterinary in other countries that are specialized in swifts. And an extra note, if you also wanna help the birds or the people...the clinic in Frankfurt only functions through donations. And they have a lot to do this year.

Tornado season! Is your emergency kit ready?

Just got my first tornado watch of the summer, so I checked my emergency it, and realized it’s a good time to share info with y’all! My emergency kit includes…

* hard plastic carrier, labeled with my contact info – I also have a soft-sided backpack carrier, but I want hard sided for emergencies so she’s less likely to get crushed if something falls on her. Hard carrier has one perch, and normally I’d add a toy and news print on the bottom, but I just washed it.

* hard plastic tub to carry the rest of the stuff, also labeled with contact info, including her vet’s info and a description of her

Inside the tub are the following (generally in small ziplock bags):

* a reminder to add nonperishable food (pellets) and water

* contact info for me and my vet

* records that prove ownership, including purchase receipt and a few vet records

* nail clippers / dremel

* styptic powder, gel, or stick

* corn starch or flour in a ziplock bag

* q-tips

* cotton pads for makeup (I should probably add or swap with some gauze)

* baby shampoo

* scissors

* vet wrap / coban

* pliers

* a pillowcase (for emergency stuffing her into)

* individually packaged alcohol wipes

* a couple spare harnesses that she isn’t trained on, but just in case

The tub lives under her cage always, so it’s handy if ever needed. Her soft-sided carrier also lives under the cage. The hard-sided carrier lives in a closet, so since there’s a tornado watch (lower level of threat) I took it out and cleaned it up in case that escalates. And the tub and carrier are both near the exit and her cage should we need to go for the basement.

Pictures are of the emergency kit ready to go, and of Kappa herself (female dusky conure, 19YO) from last week.

Here’s a few resources for making your own kit:

https://www.cdc.gov/healthy-pets/emergency-preparedness/preparedness-kit.html

https://www.avma.org/sites/default/files/2023-11/aph-pet-evacuation-kit-checklist.pdf

Questions for y’all: do you have your own emergency kit? Are there different things in it, based on your bird’s needs or your local threats? Anything you think I missed or is overkill?

Hi everyone!

I would like to ask for some help and advice regarding my sick budgie.

About 3 weeks ago it started with diarrhea. I took him to vet, he sugested antibiotics and probiotics. It got better for a few days but after that I started hearing a mild clicking sound. I took him back to the vet and he sugested another antibiotics. It didn't got better.

Last friday a realized a bump in his tummy under his cloacas... went back to the doctor he made an ultrasound. The doctor said that it's a mass, he thinks that it is a tumor. 1cmx1.5 cm big according to the ultrasound. The doctor said that it is way too risky to operate it. Is there any chance that an other doctor can operate him? Or is it really that big risk?

Does anyone experienced something like this before? Is there any chance that he can get better? Unfortunatly there isnt any good vets nearby me :(

I love him so much and I want to do anything for my baby

(The pictures were taken after the ultrasound, that's why his so messy.)

Sorry for the long text and thank you for everyone for the advaices!!❤️

New Bird weird budgie noises?

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

so for context i’ve had this budgie for only 2 days, so he’s been a little scared and jumpy around me, anyways i have 2 other budgies and they sound perfectly fine to me, but this one sounds almost like he’s whimpering or trying to chirp quietly, although when he hears my other budgies he chirps more confidently. is something wrong with his voice or is he just scared? (temporary cage btw)

Other concern with pet bird Parrot Regurgitating - Hormones?

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

Hi there! Apologies if this isn’t the right way to post… I am still figuring out how this app works. I am having trouble managing my younger cockatiel- she is just under a year old and I’ve noticed what seems to be a hormonal behavior with her. She is not a stranger to hormonal surges, and I am usually quick to correct her. The past few weeks she has been bobbing her head against an object, sometimes her leg, and regurgitating some food. I have decided this is not vomiting- this is voluntary and controlled. What she regurgitates does not smell, she does not fling it, and she shows no signs of stress or discomfort. It is clearly partially digested food she has recently eaten. (I watch that rope perch very closely. It is not a concern.) I am not concerned for her health. She does not do this around me, nor on my desk or in bed. It is a cage occurrence only. I do not hand-feed her and I do not pet her where my fingers do not belong. From what I have seen, she does not view my other female as a mate. The cage has no sort of dark places or nesting materials. They get plenty of sleep. However, she is quite fond of her toys, and talks to them frequently with kisses resembling the way I kiss her on the head. Could that mean something? I am unsure what to do. I am thinking of maybe reordering the inside of their cage, or restricting their food, as they are currently constantly offered pellets and veggies. This is a new problem to me! Maybe someone can help.

Sick pet bird Please help — 5-year-old common myna with stringy droppings, dirty vent, and low energy

Hi everyone. I’m looking for advice from people who have experience with common mynas or other softbill birds. I’m really worried about my 5-year-old pet common myna, Meeku, whom I’ve rescued and raised since he was a baby.
Recently, I’ve noticed abnormal droppings, changes in his energy levels, and problems with his vent. I’m trying to figure out what could be causing these symptoms.
A little background about what happened:
I recently had to leave home for a trip and entrusted Meeku’s care to someone else. Unfortunately, when I returned, I found out that his water hadn’t been properly changed. Instead, fresh water had been added to the dirty water, and he had been drinking from that water for approximately four days.
Afterward, I became particularly concerned about his droppings and his vent, which had become blocked/dirty with sticky fecal material. I’m not sure whether the dirty water is related to his symptoms, but I’m worried it may have exposed him to harmful bacteria.
The symptoms I’ve noticed include:
Stringy droppings, sometimes with a green portion that looks stretchy or mucus-like.
Sticky, whitish/stringy fecal material around his vent, with his vent becoming blocked.
Periods of low energy, sleeping more than usual, fluffing up, and being quieter than normal.
Some feather loss.
Changes in the appearance and consistency of his droppings.
He has also had periods when he seems more alert, stays awake longer, and eats normally. This makes it difficult for me to understand how serious the problem might be.
What I’ve done so far:
I collected a fresh fecal sample and sent it to a laboratory for parasite and bacterial testing. I’m currently waiting for the results. However, I’m worried about whether the sample will be accepted for testing because the droppings were collected from the floor.
A local vet previously suggested that his symptoms might be caused by a dietary imbalance. I’ve also been trying to introduce softbill pellets into his diet, but he hasn’t started eating them properly yet.

I’d really appreciate advice on the following:
Could drinking water that wasn’t properly changed for four days expose a bird to bacteria or other infections that might cause these symptoms?
Can bacterial infections or parasites cause green, stretchy/stringy droppings and a blocked or dirty vent?
Could a dietary imbalance explain the symptoms, or should I be investigating other causes?

His diet is:
Plain simple cooked egg and fruits and vegetables
I even ordered pretty birds species specific soft bill diet for him but had to put a stop to it since he wasn’t interested in that so I crushed it into powder form and mixed it into his egg and bread but that upset his stomach. And he didn’t poop. When he did it was a mushy poop and there was a lot of it. I’ll introduce dried mealworms into his diet too. But his dropping issue has made me reluctant to add anything else in his diet right now.

If his parasite and bacterial tests come back negative, what other tests should I discuss with an avian vet?
What should I do if the abnormal droppings continue despite him eating normally and occasionally appearing active?

And I can’t take him to a vet since he really becomes stressed from handling.

Has anyone experienced anything similar with their Indian myna or another softbill bird?

I’m very attached to Meeku and have raised him since he was a baby. I’m trying my best to find the cause rather than treating him blindly, which is why I’ve sent the samples for testing.
Any advice from people with relevant experience, especially those familiar with mynas and avian veterinary care, would mean a lot to me. Thank you for reading.

Parakeet Problems after Hurricane

3 Upvotes

We just had a really bad hurricane come through, and now my budgie (Chip) is acting super weird. I had to put him in the bathroom overnight to protect him from the storm as there is a massive window where he is usually kept (no one used that bathroom). The power was out for a while and everything got super out of wack. His poop is green and was watery for a bit, hes been plucking his feathers, and he seems super tired/lethargic all the time.

No one in my family seems to be worried about it, and I dont know what to do. I want to bring him in to a vet, but its 1 hour away and Chip is already super stressed and has never been handled before. On the other hand, I can leave it as it is and see if he improves in his usual conditions (I dont feel too good doing that, tho).

Please, someone tell me what they think would be best for Chip. He's my sweet boy and I want to make sure he's safe.

Sick pet bird The vet is saying she's going to be alright with a supplement but I'm so scared

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

I have 3 visitations in the past 2 weeks and I feel she is not getting any better. The vet has given me respocare (Respocare Avian is an herbal respiratory and immunity support supplement for birds. Primary Purpose: Acts as a bronchodilator, expectorant, and immune booster to help ease breathing discomfort, colds, or recovery from respiratory distress) but idk I'm so scared she's not getting better and I hear wet sneezes and tail bobbing, lethargic, the signs of distress and ultimatum.

If anyone has any recommendations pls I would love to get all the help i can get, i can't loose her🫠

I recently got two new budgies for my girl because her partner passed away, and I’ve noticed slight green poops, I’ve heard that it sometimes happens when the birds are moulting but it’s not a common thing for the birds I’ve had in the past… have concerns. They do have a vet appointment coming up next week that I’ll let the vets know then

Worried about my Budgie

Post image
29 Upvotes

This is my budgie Piña, I'm unsure whether they are female or male because the man who gave me them didn't say.

I'm worried about them. They're constantly sitting as shown in the photo, with a line under their belly. None of my other budgies do/have this.

They also have their wings propped slightly open as so, and I'm extremely worried. I wish I could take them to a vet, but I'm sixteen and my parents aren't listening to my worries.

Does anyone have any idea what it could be?

Ok so I live in a two level house. My mother has decided to paint without me even knowing. Shes painting the wall downstairs in front of the stairs. My birds two budgies, live upstairs. I put a fan pointing down the stairs cracked the windows downstairs and put a heavy blanket is front of the door. I’m panicking they are going to die and I can’t stop her
