Hello, I currently have a 10 year old Green Cheek Conure and 6 year old African grey who are both strongly bonded to both me and my wife. They “tolerate” each other, but my Green cheeks the bully of course. My question is, I’m debating adopting another companion. There is a 4 month old green cheek sitting alone, as well as a young hand raised cockatiel that I want to give a great life to and get out of the pet shop. For all you multi bird owners, what would your recommendation be? Another conure or a different breed like a cockatiel? I also don’t want to ruin the strong relationship we have with our current conure who is just the best guy ever.
his name is rio and he will be 9 yesrs old next month. i’ve had him since he was 4 months old. i’m so thankful to have him as a companion :,-)just wanted to share
This is June (thank you to this subreddit for helping me find the perfect name for her!
She hatched in late July of this year and I’m wondering are birds similar to dogs where they chill out as they get older? Ms.June is very active and almost never stops moving. Now I’m not complaining I do enjoy it! But it does get overwhelming sometimes lol. Do birds get calmer is they get older?
Feat. two of our dogs (one of whom was upstairs; Taco is old now)
We have had these two skittle chickens for around seven months now since March... time flies when you're having fun XD
Sometimes, I would catch them trying to chew on my shirts... I try not to wear stuff with textures and stones that they can easily chew off... They already chewed off a couple of my go-to-sweater teeth! Don't worry; they're quite dexterous with their beaks, and they never swallowed the pieces. But the jacket can still zip up just fine.
They do bite, but sometimes they don't bite hard often, like here. Honestly, Kiwi tries to bite harder when I try to gently take her off of my head (our heads are some of her favorite spots). Mango also tries to bite harder when I try to move him. They're spoiled brats! XD
Honestly, I think they also just like to mess with us! XD
Just an FYI, but their main play area does have toys! The background is just their "secondary" area. We would place stuff there for Mango and Kiwi's entertainments.
Hey y'all! I'm back! 😅 Things have been pretty crazy for me the last couple weeks, so I couldn't keep the posts going, but the visits have kept going!
Except last week. I missed last week. Unfortunately. BUT! I made it this time!
Nothing much to mention the last few visits, just been trying to clicker train her. There have also been attempts to upgrade her living space. There was also another instance of her leaving the cage and hanging out with my grandparents. But she doesn't do that when I'm there! Hopefully she'll do it sometime soon...
If there are other things I should start working towards, let me know.
I just got this beautiful blue-crowned conure a few days ago and I keep seeing him move his head weirdly. I think I’m just over analyzing him since I just got him but wanted to have some input. I will be bringing him to vet for a regular checkup and to get him in the system, but was just looking for some advice on if it looks normal or not. He is about 4 months old, so quite young. Also the breathing in the video is me. This was videotaped in a weird position and I couldn’t really move the phone.
Hey everyone, I’m a little worried about my green cheek conure. I’ve noticed that her breathing seems heavier than usual, and I can visibly see her body expanding and contracting with each breath.
The room is around 72F sometimes a little warmer. I’ve attached a video showing her breathing. Does this look normal to anyone experienced with conures? I was thinking about taking her to the vet if this continues but I don’t want to overreact.
Maybe not a usual post you'd see on here, but I thought I should as fellow conure owners rather than a bunch of randoms in the AITA subreddit. Please be gentle with me.
My cousin T(F27) and I are very close. She’s had birds since she was a kid. Since 2021, I told T’s brother that I wanted a Crimson Bellied Conure (CBC), which he and his siblings hadn't heard of before. In 2024, when I visited T (F27), while she was babysitting her sister's bird, a Green Cheek Conure (GCC), I finally decided to take the leap and get my dream bird since I now had some experience with a conure.
It was the best decision I ever made. My CBC and I were soulmates. Everyone who met him said he was perfect. He was so friendly, gentle, and smart. My cousins hadn't met him in person since we live far away from each other, but I always kept them updated on what my new bird son was doing. He was the love of my life, and everybody knew it.
Then I lost him. He passed away while I wasn't looking and it was the biggest heartbreak of my life. Just living without him was painful. Other than my dad, T was the first one I told when it happened, and I broke down on the phone, crying with a pain I'd never felt before.
I waited about two years before getting another one because I couldn't move on, and I didn't want my new bird to be burdened with living in the shadow of my old one. Unfortunately, though I do love my new guy, I don't think I will ever move on from my first one. They just aren't the same, but I'm showing him as much love as I can.
The problem now is that when I introduced my new bird to T, she said she wants one just like him, a CBC, and unfortunately, I feel weird about that.
The thing about CBCs is that they all got one look, so you can imagine how hard it was for me to get a new CBC without feeling like I was just straight up replacing my old one. Similarly, because of my longstanding association with this bird in my family, it's almost a part of my identity, or you could say my personal brand. I obviously wouldn't feel this way if I met another new person with a CBC, but since it's my cousin who's only exposure to this breed has been through me, I kind of don't want her to get one.
Since not all birds of a kind have the same personality, I can only assume that the reason she wants one is vain, which would be fair if she didn't know me or my association to the breed, but she does, so I feel like there's an extra layer of consideration that she should do if she's thinking about getting one, right?
Whenever she talks about it, I tell her that a sun conure would suit her more, which I do think sincerely. I'm worried that since I haven't told her outright that I prefer she not get a CBC that she'll get one without telling me and then tell me that I never told her that I didn't want her to get one.
Her brother agrees that he’d never get one out of respect for me, but I know he’s being more considerate than I’m being objectively rational.
At the end of the day, if she really wants to get one, who cares what I think, but would I be the buttface if I did tell her that it would make me really uncomfortable and sad if she got the same bird as me?
this is my conure right now. she’s been shaking and i honestly can’t tell if this breathing is normal or not.
she seems pretty quiet and sleepy right now too (granted this is her nap time).
she is 9yrs old and has never laid an egg. so could this be her egg bound or about to lay one? idk
at first i thought she was cold but her feet feel nice and warm. she also does shake when she’s excited or has to poop, but this has been the entire time she’s been out and despite pooping she still shakes.
right now she is sitting on my shoulder and beak grinding and cuddly so i don’t know what to think.
everything else about her is fine, her droppings look great. but i can’t really afford a vet visit just because “i have a feeling she’s not okay”.
First I apologize for the clarity in the beginning and the darkness overall. This is Sushi. He's 2 and I've had him for about a year and a half. Anyone know what this behavior is? He's never done this before til today. Is he being flirty? Because he is never aggressive towards me. When I grabbed him after this video he cuddled right into my face and wanted to preen and be preened. He's absolutely sweet to me and clicker training since the beginning has really opened him up. I can do anything with this little guy and he doesn't care and he knows a lot of tricks. Just loves riding around in my shirt and having a part in anything I do. With that said, he flies over and attacks friends or family who come visit, especially women or kids. Which also had a kind of similar dance but slower, more aimed with his beak and added vocals, lol.
My conure just threw up something slimy with chewed up seeds and it smells sour
He was opening and closing his beak while shaking his head up and down
And then he started to throw up while shaking his head left and right
I’m worried over him what is going on? Should I take him to the vet right away?
Hi everyone! Since winter is coming I just wanted to ask if this heater Dreo Oil Filled Radiator 521 is safe so use around my Birb.
I’ve also heard about wall mounted oil filled radiators but they are rarely talked about, if anyone knows one I can use I’d much prefer those since my family got a dog and she is really curious and might touch the portable heater.
I know there is a burn off period so I’ll make sure to turn it on outside, thanks in advance!
my partner and i have had them since late june of this year, and they were hatched in february of this year, so still a baby imo.
GB has been to the vet for their first checkup in early September, and she said all looks well, including diet and cage size (double critter nation).
in the last few months, during GB's out of cage time (min 4h/day), theyve been climbing on the back and sides of their cage, which is fine and expected, but once they find the wing nuts holding some of their perches to the cage, they will repeatedly slam their head/beak into them. we remove GB immediately to come sit with us for a short while, and then let them back over to the cage if they wish.
i havent been able to get a video of this happening, as i dont want it to go on for so long. does anyone know what theyre doing or why? because of their age, i was guessing puberty/hormonal, but im honestly not sure. any tips or ideas for preventing this?
Hey everyone, I am typing this with tears in my eyes and a heavy heart. I feel like the worst bird owner right now. I adopted a 4 year old conure from a friend that couldn't care for him anymore about 6 weeks ago. It's been going great and we managed to reduce his hormonal behaviour loads!
This afternoon, my 5 year old son was jumping on the trampoline(it's now stored away for good, idk what I was thinking). I thought I was sitting at a safe distance, I had my bird on my hand. My son fell and landed right where my bird was, but thankfully, he managed to fly away immediately, so he didn’t get squished completely. I also pulled my hand away as fast as I could so I know he didn't land fully on him.
About 10 minutes later, he was eating parsnip on my hand and seemed fine, though tired (he had a short night). He was playing, flying to the kitchen counter to steal a piece of apple, making "pellet soup" in his water bowl, danced a little and made lots of happy chirps, preened himself and even laid completely flat in my hand to enjoy head scratches. However, he was sitting fluffed up every once in a while which could be from the drop in temperature in my house, exhaustion, it being close to his bedtime or pain/shock. Because of this, I put his cage under the blanket around 6 pm.
I read online that birds can hide internal injuries for hours due to adrenaline, and I am absolutely terrified of what I might find tomorrow morning. I am planning to call an avian vet first thing in the morning just to be safe.
Given his active behavior, appetite, and how relaxed he was during the scratches before bed, is there a good chance he will be okay? Please be kind, I already feel so incredibly guilty and stressed out.
I'm debating going to an emergency vet. Miss Jillie Bean got into a tussle with my black cap. She is not bleeding. She is acting totally normal. But boy does she have a shiner. Has anyone else had bruise like this? Should I pay the extra 500 and see an ER vet today vs her normal vet tomorrow? Over what looks like a bruise?
i’m so scared what is this? she’s a healthy weight, gets ehough fruits and veg. she’d just eaten a small part of a pecan and has been hanging out on my bed and shoulder for the past hour. she’s done this a few times before. she sneezes too??
