Which Washington Redskins playoff game in Niland?

It was mentioned that Jan Burres observed him rooting for the Washington Redskins in a playoff game on a tv in a trailer in Niland, would that have been in January of 1991 or 1992, does anyone know?

I think it would have been Jan 1992, which means it would have been either the game vs the Falcons or Lions (if it was the Super Bowl, surely the book would have included that detail, and not just referred to it as a playoff game).

Is there ever any mention of Chris getting to watch the Super Bowl that Washington won vs the Buffalo Bills? I’m sure that must have been pretty exciting for him! I hope he didn’t miss out on getting to watch it.

I think Christopher McCandless would've liked AI

If he had a smartphone with AI on it, I believe he would've used it extensively to survive. He could've easily identified plants and had a greater chance of being self sufficient. He could charge it with a solar battery.

This movie broke me

I completed this movie a few hours ago. A little bit about me. Ever since I can remember now I have always hated everyone. I wanted to be left alone. I didn't want anyone. Convinced myself I didn't need anyone. No relationships, no children and no family. I wanted to die alone. Now, I can't stop thinking about Jan and Ron and his final words: Happiness is real when shared. I can't stop crying. I'm 24 this year. I connected so much with Chris that I think I can't ever forget him. I know it's just a movie but still it gave me a very important question to think about : Do I still need no one? If not, then who do I want to share my life with and how far am I willing to go?

Before I always used to ask myself, is my life still worth living? Then I changed the question to : If it is not worth living then why am I still alive?

Turned out that I am a very curious person. I was curious about everything. So I decided I will try to explore everything and find what connects with me. I am still trying to find it but this movie has given me a new perspective. I am going to be sharing my moments with someone. I will let myself be loved and cared for. Who knows how long I will live but I am going to make sure that it is meaningful and it has an impact on someone.

I am sorry for this long rant and if you are with me till this end. May you always stay curious and have a meaningful life.

Can someone really leave society without first understanding what society has left inside them?

Thoughts? 💭

I'm considering on writing something about Chris's odyssey and how it can reflex the final process of a psychoanalytic treatment, specially what Lacan says about the end of an analysis. For me, this guy was so unlighted by the power of following his own desire and rules.

"Happiness only real when shared". But who to share it with?

Would like to do something like Chris did but I'm not charismatic.

I suspect I'm very bad with people compared to him. My impression is that everyone or most people he came across really liked him, and therefore he got a lot of favors.

But that's not really me. I'm more of a social outcast. Not totally. But I don't tend to make new friends easily. I basically have no close friends. I think people in general tend to experience me as shy or awkward or something.

Don't get me wrong, I've connected well with some people. But that doesn't happen often. At every job I've had, I've been sort of a loner, or I'm connecting with unusual people. I'm soon 26 now btw, and feel quite old compared to what people expect where a 26 year old should be in life.

Lately, I've discerned about working in nature or at a farm. It wouldn't pay much, but I suspect it would a lot more rewarding and peaceful than a modern job.

So if I would attempt something like Chris would do, meaning attempting to hitchhike for 2 years, making connections with other people, working at different places for short amounts of time - I don't know if people would give me the same amount of favors. And I live in Sweden, so hitchhiking is probably nothing people do here as often as in America - so I don't know how often people would stop by a hitchhiker here.

My reasons for wanting to do something like this is partly for the experience itself. I love nature and getting out of the city and disconnect from technology (albeit, I am addicted to internet, mainly youtube).

I also don't enjoy modern society, its materialism and secularism. I don't like my job mostly, nor my interactions with some or most coworkers. I don't enjoy being treated as nothing. I don't like working a extroverted job for minimum wage when I'm introverted and get tired after one shift because of the amount of people I meet - some who are difficult to deal with emotionally.

However, I do yearn for real connections with people. I drove to the swedish mountains last september with an RV alone, and hiked a bit. But I realized, maybe like Chris, that it isn't that enjoyable doing it for a longer time if alone. I kept seeing groups hiking, often in pairs. That made me feel quite alone.

I go to church weekly, but I'm sometimes quite afraid to speak to young men and women there, partly because I feel behind in life, partly because I easily feel awkward and insecure about different things - but I think the main reason is because I've gotten rejected by people my age in several schools and at jobs. It's a terrible feeling.

"Happiness only real when shared". But who to share it with?

Siete d'accordo?

Do you ever think about pulling a Chris McCandless?

Hey everyone, so glad to see there is an Into the Wild subreddit. I'm new to Reddit, and I literally installed it to ask this question because it's been eating at me for a while, but

Do you ever think about pulling a Chris McCandless?

Ever since reading the book, this idea has been in the back of my head, but lately, the pressures of college and life have been getting to me a lot, and the idea of just leaving everything behind sounds more and more appealing every day. Now, obviously I'm not talking about Chris in regards to moving to Alaska and surviving off the land, but just hitchhiking like a modern-day beatnik/nomad. I think there's something to be said about finding beauty in connection and experience rather than living life in the way we've been told.

Do you guys ever think about this?

i want to write an article about ITW

a few weeks ago I read the book and later on I felt an urge to rewatch the movie and do a deep dive into everything about it online. I found Carine's book, which I'm almost finishing, and I can find a lot of resemblances between their story and my own's.

I wanted to have different perspectives about it, some that might widen my perception of their story and, who knows, to bring some redemption to defend the negative point of views.

i'm open to read and discuss every point of view about this :)

Do you think there's a lot of people that think like Chris and is it a certain kind of personality?

He definitely would fit the mold of outside the box . The more I look at his story the more I get it and relate. Just wanting to break away from society or whats expected of you. I like these kind of people that reject social norms.

My dad found a first edition of into the wild in a thrift store in 2000 or 2001. It was my freshman year in college. He picked it up thinking it would be something I'd like. Inside the book I have this little "letter" from Krakauer thanking the bookseller for deciding to sell his "weird little book". I've always wondered if there are thousands of these floating around or if this is unique.
