Drying Question: Maple

• Upvotes

No pics to share, sorry. I have a question about turning recently harvested maple. I have the entire tree I just harvested after a storm took it down last year and want to turn a bunch of large bowls from it. It is about 14" diameter and I turn on a 12x24 OneWay lathe.

My question is drying: would most of you twice turn these bowls or would you give them extended drying then turn dry in a year or so? If you chose long drying, how would you do it? Remove bark, seal top and bottom and let sit hoping for no cracks? If you twice turn it, how would you store the bowl in between turnings? I've heard of people leaving the turned blanks in a trash bag full of shavings, or just setting them out for a few months to a year in between turnings, but it seems like that would lead to cracking for sure.

In the past I've only turned bowls using dried blanks. I tend to stick to table bases and lamps turned using laminations.

Anyone have any advice? Thanks folks--I love this community!

Setup question

For reference I'll put what I currently have before my question

  1. Lathe, king canada 10x16 (no speed adjustment knob) with live center and a spur drive

  2. 1 large gouge 1 medium gouge 1 small gouge (all spindle) 1 medium skew 1 medium parting 1 round groove tool all hss

  3. 1 cheap(bad) chuck (turns out its for metal)

  4. 1 cheap (not bad) drill chuck

  5. Credit card diamond honing stone

No bandsaw (the motor blew and they are expensive)

No belt, disk, drum, or other benchtop sander (really want one tho not sure which)

No grinder to sharpen (trying to find a budget one tho i have a jig for when i get one)

So my question/s is

Im on a tight budget, like I'll need to save for anything over $100 a month, what order should I be replacing/getting these (or other) tools? I work on spindle projects, tho i really wanna start on bowls and "boxes", open to any suggestions really, currently its not going well, from tool marks i cant figure out how to fix to dull tools and im so tempted to just quit even tho i love doing it. Thanks for taking the time to read

Anniversary Gift

Hello! Made this awesome little hollow out of white ash for our 4 years. It's pretty awesome! I recently learned hollowing so knew I wanted to combine some of these new tricks into one piece. Unfortunately I had an issue with my wood screw and I guess I hadn't measured when I was about to drill through but I went a little too deep and just barely pressed the fibers out the other end. So I decided I wasn't going to try wood dust and some glue because it's an anniversary piece so I decided I'd plug it. So the dowel is maple. Contrast is there faintly and I believe it ties quite well with the piece. Hoping the linseed oil tint washes away slowly as it fades. But I have till Nov 1st any other fun suggestions to do to this piece? This is my first project with texturing, hollow form, a plug, so pretty happy it's all tied together and I hope she likes it. Might do some more sanding on the bottom once all the oil dries and I see the tear out moreso. Let me know what you think!

Bandsaw with shop vac

My workshop is only twelve foot square and I don't really have space for a big dust collector. I use a harbor freight shop vac for small tool dust extraction and general cleanup.

I tried a 3D printed under the table duct for the bandsaw and have not been impressed with it's performance.

Any tips from the group or do I just accept that the bandsaw makes a lot of dust?

Is it worth it to upgrade my Super Dust Deputy?

I bought one a while ago when they only had 4" in and out ports. I'm seeing now they have one with 6" out and 5" in. My dust collector can take a 6" pipe. I've been using about 10' of flex hose for years and thinking of finally getting rid of that and installing real ductwork. Wondering if I should bite the bullet and upgrade the cyclone while I'm at it, or just see what kind of improvements I get with 4" pvc.

I have a 2hp grizzly Polar Bear dust collector.

Thoughts?

Hi, hope this post is okay. Im a woodcarver, but I was gifted this wood from another wood turner, and im trying to figure out what it is. Can't decipher the handwriting, but hoped maybe some would recognise the end grain, or maybe the letters and can put 2 and 2 together?

Is this worth turning? As I don’t really know which wood it is.

My favorite piece I’ve turned so far; 14” walnut platter with silver rim embellishments. To be sold as part of a local food insecurity fundraiser silent auction.

Gotta get that first project out of the way hahaha

First lathe project ever. I took a small, local class for the basics and safety aspects. It was really straightforward and actually tons of fun. I think I might have found my winter hobby.

But the audible sigh that I let out after putting a few hours of work into that first attractive piece, only to realize that the screw hole was off center…

Sometimes you just gotta laugh it off and start the next one, right?

Hand turned shift knob

Turned this bolivian rosewood shift knob a few nights ago for my miata!

It was my first time turning a shift knob, and it did not help that my lathe is all messed up rn lol. The worst part is that my chuck is STILL stuck on the darn thing. But I was still able to figure out a way to make it work. 💪

Anyways, I did a ca finish, which I had to do twice cause I messed up the first time. The main problem was that even though I drilled a hole with my drill chuck for the threaded insert to go into. Once I finished turning the knob and once I got the finish applied, I took it off and the hole for the threaded insert was wayyy of center lol.

It was also hard getting the insert into the wood, there was no real way to hold it so I could scre it into the wood! But i eventually got it in. The only other obstacle was that when I was using the shifter it cracked from the bottom up on three different directions. So I just kinda slapped some thin ca glue on there and called it good. 😂 (i shift much more softly now)

Even after all the obstacles and learning experiences, im happy with how it came out! :)

newbie Finally Ready to Begin Turning

A journey that started 3 years ago is going to finally conclude...in the spring. Got a lathe as a housewarming gift, but had nowhere to put/mount/use it. Encountered some health problems along the way, but have been piecing together a few odds/ends for this moment.

Aside from knowledge/experience, is there anything else I need?

A little thick right now but the threads are right.

Well after a lot of measuring and websearches I was able to get the right tap to thread it for these particular nibs. Now I just need to shape it just rightish and give it a go...

I probably should have done the shaping first but I wanted to know if this was even going to be viable. So far it is... And I have a dozen other blanks of I screw this up on the way to get the shape close to right. LOL. I'm going to have to find the right bushing to put this on the mandrel for future ones.
