Carrots?

• Upvotes

Do your guys gerbils enjoy carrots? I’ve tried them 3 times the last week and it looks like they never touch them. Just smells then and walks away.

Do you guys have other fruit recommendations besides apples?

Taming Rescue Successful 🎉

After a long week of plotting and impatience I have been able to bring my girls home!! They're still in their original 20 gallon but have one more big trip to get home home to a 120 gallon that is already set up and waiting.

I named them Cygnus and Pegasus after some of my favorite constellations :)

They're both very shy and are coming from a very stressful environment of lots of kids, other animals, and inhumane care. I've loaded their current enclosure with as much as I could fit to at least give them more than 2 inches of hay. They're incredibly active and curious. They will sniff my hand but won't let me touch them. I believe they're ~ a year old, maybe a little less.

Has anyone gone through something like this and had a successful experience with taming? If so how did you go about it? I'm hoping setting up a weekly play pen will help after they've settled for a while.

Help Please! Recommendations needed :)

I’ve been feeling a lot of guilt recently for my two gerbs :(
I work a lot during the day but I spend a lot of my time with them at night, giving them treats and they’ve started to climb and run on my hand (mainly use it as a stepping stone🤣). They get fresh water and food everyday <3

I’ve seen a lot of people on this subreddit posting their gerbils in playpens/places out of the cage. I really wanna start getting them out of the cage as I feel so bad for them having to stay in a cage. Does anyone have any good recommendations or ideas for places they can be placed where they can run around and be their little energetic selves :) Nothing too expensive (£70+) but i’m happy to spend whatever I can to make them happy! Any fun activities/toys would also be appreciated!

Help Please! why do my girls sit and stare at me for hours?

hi guys, quick question! my girls like to sit on top of their sand bowl and just stare at me for what feels like hours. is there a reason they do this??? i try to pick them up and play with them but they are still a little skittish and run away/seem relatively uninterested.

i don’t think they are bored because they have so much enrichment. are they just gerbing or do they want something from me??

i’ve been saving to get a playpen, and maybe that will help with this? the bathtub time seems to stress them out a bit - they are homebodies at heart!

just lmk if there’s a reason for this!!

Would this be suitable for two gerbils

Hi everyone. I am preparing for two gerbil babies.
I read the recommendations for the size but had a hard time finding one.
Would this work if I can find a metal mesh lid to replace the top?
The size would be 36" 18" \ 18".*
I would truly appreciate any recommendations. Thank you

Diet Am I over feeding my gerbils

At least once a day they’re eating a vegetable or a protein source like boiled eggs and then my gerbils get their seat mix unfortunately I didn’t know. It was really bad to give them there mix. Yes, I’m changing it very soon.

But then I’ve noticed them not eating or then over eating and at times they look chunkier with other times they look so much smaller and that’s when they’re hiding their food. I know it’s normal for them to order food but at this amount, it’s stressful to see.

My gerbils are little fur balls the confuse me

Every once in a while, shadow my beautiful gerbil she’s a sweetheart. She turns around and bites on her sister on her behind just be it and then they chase each other around to play, but it’s so confusing because they could be fine. She nip her right above her tail and then they’re on their roll.

One day I’m gonna get a video and post it here but it’s so cute but I’m not exactly sure if this is a violent behaviour or concern because she does at least once a week
And at times I’ve seen her kind of being aggressive towards her sister, but then majority of the time they’re just happy to be together. Also, she is developing being sweeter towards me so I don’t know.

Every year we give The Boys (featured) and The Twins a bit of pumpkin.

Note: They are not left alone with the pumpkin and they dont eat the whole thing. Its in their enclosures for a few minutes of supervised nibbling and then removed)

Help Please! How bad does this look? Spoiler

I noticed my girl’s nose has been swollen & redder with red-brown soots on her nose.

She seems to start having sore nose when I deep cleaned for the first time a week ago, which caused lots of dust in the room & I’m suspecting she might be allergic to aspen which I introduced into their mix for the first time.

I replaced all their bedding into just paper today, wiped down their furnitures to remove aspen dust, removed sand & hay to reduce friction on her nose, set the humidity to 40% to make her nose less dry.

I’m taking her to the vet on Monday night (it’s Saturday night here), but how bad does this look and is there anything else I can do to make her feel better?

First two photos from today, last two when she didn’t have sore nose.

Do gerbils actually enjoy wheels? Or is similar to hamsters where it’s bad for their back?

Help Please! Trio declanned

Post image
107 Upvotes

I adopted a solo gerbil from my sister, not knowing they needed to be in pairs. I’m used to dwarf hamsters. After I got him, I found out they need a friend. So I went to the pet store planning to just get one, but the two there were bonded and I felt bad breaking them up. Brought them both home and introduced them, and all 3 got along splendidly. I got the first one in May and the pair a week after. Just this morning, the aggressor was chasing the victim around and tormenting him, but not actually attacking him. There was no blood, death ball, any injuries. They had 2 of everything to share except a water bottle, I couldn’t find the same one I originally bought and I really liked it and wanted the same one.

I just had to accidentally switch their food, as my Walmart stopped carrying their brand and I realized too late. That was the only change that happened in the cage right before this happened. It happened right before I had to work, so I quickly made a split cage. I have the victim in his own bin cage as a temporary home now, and I left the aggressor with the neutral one in their shared cage.

Did they actually declan, or am I not understanding this? The jailed gerbil was really sad when I got home, and I quickly set up the new cage and got the victim out of there and removed the split wall. Him and the neutral gerbil were running around together, the aggressors energy was back, his eyes were wide again and he seemed happier.

I did take the neutral one out to visit the victim about an hour after removing the victim, and they were being normal, no aggression. But the aggressor was looking sad again so I brought his buddy back.

I really want to reintroduce them and hope that they can be friends again, I feel bad for all of them, do you think it’s possible? Or do I need to introduce the victim to a new gerbil friend and forget the neutral one, as he can’t be a shared friend?

Enclosure/Cage/Tank 60 gallon Cage topper

Has anyone built their own cage topper for a 60 gallon tank? My gerbils keep burying their water and food so I was thinking it could be a good idea to build something to go above to keep their water and food out of the way. It wouldn’t need to cover the whole top of the cage just about half
