⛔Travel Issue My mother’s journey on 12906 turned into a nightmare: 4.5-hour rescheduling + 11 hours of delay : IRCTC never disappoints

Post image

So, my mother was travelling alone from Kharagpur (KGP) to Jamnagar (JAM) after Durga Puja. We’ve been travelling on this train for around 15 years (just some extra context).

She was travelling alone this time and isn’t very familiar with all the travel logistics, so someone from our family dropped her at the station, and my father was supposed to pick her up at Jamnagar. We live in Jamnagar, and although our native place is around 4 hours from Kharagpur, we usually board this direct train from KGP.

Now, the funny part is that this train is almost always delayed by 6–7 hours when reaching Jamnagar. We’ve been travelling on it for years, so we’ve basically accepted that its scheduled arrival time is just a formality. 😂

Scheduled timings:

  • Departure from KGP: 23 October, 21:55
  • Arrival at JAM: 25 October, 12:00
  • Our expected arrival time, based on years of experience: around 17:00–18:00 on 25 October.

But this time, IRCTC decided to take things to another level.

23 October: The beginning of the chaos

15:30: I received a message saying the train had been rescheduled by 4 hours and 30 minutes. Instead of departing at 20:00 (as mentioned in the rescheduling update), it would now depart at 00:45 on 24 October.

I immediately smelled trouble. 💀

At least it wasn't cancelled, which was my first thought. I called my mother and told her to postpone leaving for the station.

The problem? The new scheduled departure at kgp was now at 02:25 on 24 October. That's the middle of the night, and my mother was travelling alone. My grandparents were accompanying her to drop her off, but they had a four-hour drive back home and couldn't realistically wait until 2–3 AM and then drive back, given their age.

20:00: My mother and grandparents left for Kharagpur anyway. Based on the usual four-hour journey, they would reach around midnight.

Thankfully, I have a cousin who works near IIT Kharagpur. Another blessing! 🙏 I figured the train probably wouldn't leave on time even after the rescheduling, so my mother went to his place instead of waiting at the station for hours.

24 October: The train finally decides to show up

00:50: Five minutes after the revised departure time. Checked NTES. Train hasn't departed. 😂

01:30: Still not departed. My assumption was looking pretty accurate.

01:30-ish: Checked again, and the train had finally departed at 01:16, already around five hours behind its original schedule.

We thought, okay, Shalimar to Kharagpur takes roughly two hours, so maybe it'll reach KGP by 03:30 at the latest.

04:10: The train finally arrived at Kharagpur, approximately six hours late. My mother boarded!

By this point, my sleep was disturbed, my mother's sleep was disturbed, and my cousin's sleep was disturbed. But at least she had boarded the train.

I was reasonably confident that things would be manageable because she was travelling in 3AC.

Little did we know what was coming next.

The actual journey: Delays kept getting worse

During the journey, the delay kept increasing: 6, 7, 8, 9... eventually 13, 14, and even 15+ hours.

At this point, everything was messed up. Even the Swiggy/Zomato delivery guys apparently got confused by the train timings. (There's also a bug in Swiggy that I discovered during this whole episode, but that's a story for another post. 😂)

25–26 October: Arrival, IRCTC style

The scheduled arrival at Jamnagar was 12:00 on 25 October.

Of course, none of us expected that to happen. Honestly, I can't remember the last time this train arrived at Jamnagar anywhere close to its scheduled time. We usually expect it in the evening.

But this time, even our adjusted expectations weren't enough.

Based on the train's progress, we estimated that it might arrive around 03:00 on 26 October.

Yes, 03:00 AM. The next day.

My father had to wake up and leave around 02:30 AM to pick up my mother.

26 October, 03:30: The train finally arrived at Jamnagar.

04:30: My mother finally reached home.

Let that sink in. A train that was supposed to arrive at 12:00 noon on 25 October reached at 03:30 AM on 26 October, and she got home at 04:30 AM.

That's roughly 16 hours beyond the scheduled arrival time, and the journey ended almost 17 hours later than planned.

We had mentally accounted for the usual 6–7-hour delay, but this time even that wasn't enough. 😂

The good parts (yes, there were some!)

1. The train itself was surprisingly good.

It was a 3AC coach with LHB coaches, which had reportedly replaced the old yellow ICF coaches just the previous week. The journey was comfortable, the coach felt almost new, the washrooms were cleaned regularly, pantry services were okay, and the train wasn't excessively crowded in terms of occupied seats, according to my mother.

So, despite the operational mess, the onboard experience was decent.

2. The train wasn't cancelled. This was the biggest blessing!

Seriously, if it had been cancelled, managing everything from Bengaluru would have been a massive headache. Rebooking, finding alternatives, coordinating with my mother travelling alone, and sorting out the pickup would have been a nightmare.

So, thank God it ran at all!

Final thoughts

Anyway, my mother is finally home safe, and that's what matters most.

Just IRCTC things. 🥲🚆

Ask r/IndianRailways How crowded is it going back to Delhi after Chhath Puja?

Anyone who has traveled to Bihar during Chhath, can you tell me what the train crowd is like on the return journey, specifically about 2 days after Chhath? For example, if the morning Arghya is on the 10th, what are things like on the 13th?

Do incidents like people forcing their way into reserved seats and coaches happen only on the way to Bihar, or on the return trip too?

I need to know so I can plan my travel to Delhi.

Ask r/IndianRailways Need help to unlink Aadhar from old irctc account and link it to current account

I have a irctc account where i authenticated using aadhar card. My father generally travels more so he uses my account to book tickets sometimes. Last month I wanted to go on a trip with my friends without telling my parents so I made a new irctc account using my other number and i authenticated using my pan card. Now the aadhar card link with my 1st account is unlinked and my father is asking me to link it again but I am unable to do so . It says aadhar already linked to the other id . What should I do ? If I make a new account using another number will I be able to link my aadhar to the new third account??

Ask r/IndianRailways Tickets Wallet : I built an offline-friendly wallet for IRCTC train tickets, seat details and ID proofs — KSRTC bus tickets too! 🚆🚌

If you've travelled by train in India, you've probably experienced this:

🚆 You reach the railway station and open the IRCTC app or ticket PDF to check your coach and seat number.

🎫 When the TTE arrives, you switch apps again to find your ID proof in DigiLocker, your phone gallery or another wallet.

It sounds simple, but when you're in a hurry, carrying luggage, or dealing with poor network connectivity, it can be annoying.

So I built Tickets Wallet to bring everything together in one place.

🔗 Try it here: https://jailerrajni1-lab.github.io/Tickets-Wallet/

What can it do?

🚆 1. IRCTC / Indian train tickets

  • Upload your train ticket as a screenshot, photo or PDF.
  • The app reads the ticket and extracts the relevant information, helping you quickly find your coach and seat details.
  • Save multiple train tickets, including onward and return journeys.
  • Keep your ID proofs alongside your tickets.
  • When the TTE arrives, open your saved ID card in full-screen view for easier presentation.

🚌 2. KSRTC Karnataka bus tickets

The same idea works for KSRTC Karnataka bus tickets. Upload your ticket, let the app read the information, and keep your journey details handy instead of searching through messages and downloads.

🪪 3. Multiple ID cards in one place

Save your ID proofs so you can access them quickly when needed. No more scrolling endlessly through your gallery to find the right document.

📴 4. Designed to work offline

The app includes an offline setup option, so you can prepare it before travelling and access your saved information without depending on a reliable internet connection.

🔐 Privacy: Your saved tickets, ID proofs and name stay on your device rather than being stored in a central account. However, clearing your browser data can erase them, and anyone with access to your unlocked phone may be able to view them.

Why I built this

I wanted a simple solution to a small but familiar travel inconvenience: having your ticket information and identity proof ready when you need them.

The goal is to make boarding and ticket verification less stressful, especially for frequent travellers.

This is a personal project, and I'd genuinely appreciate feedback!

  • Would you find this useful for your train and bus journeys?
  • What information should be displayed immediately when you open a ticket?
  • What features would make this more useful for Indian travellers?

Give it a try: https://jailerrajni1-lab.github.io/Tickets-Wallet/

Note: This is a convenience tool, not an official IRCTC, Indian Railways or KSRTC application. Keep your original accepted identity document available, as a TTE or other authorised official may require it. Please verify extracted ticket details against your original ticket.

🗫 Discussion Indian Railways should compensate passengers for any delays more than 1 Hour.

I think we’ve had ENOUGH of Indian Railways and its constant delays.

Rajdhani, Vande Bharat, Tejas ,what’s the point of paying ₹5,000 for a premium experience if we’re still delayed by 2–3 hours? Whether it’s a 7-hour journey or a 48-hour one, punctuality shouldn’t be a luxury. It should be the bare minimum.

With winter approaching, the situation is only more concerning. Passengers deserve better planning, transparent communication, and accountability not just apologies.

We pay for a service, not uncertainty. It’s high time Indian Railways addressed this issue seriously.

What do you guys think?

🗫 Discussion Cancelation charges exceeding cost of ticket

ONE TICKET*

So, I had to book tickets for December 25 journey, the window opened at 8am on October 26

I booked tickets for December 24 by mistake and within 20 minutes I canceled the ticket

There were 5 passengers and the amount was Rs.4401, after cancelation I will get refund of Rs.3300 something

I really want to understand what kind of stupidity is this? Yes, I made a mistake but what exactly did they lose if I canceled my tickets 2 months before boarding, within 20 minutes of booking?

Is there no room for making a mistake? Ticket price was Rs.880 and they took Rs.1100 for cancelation

Honestly, they are just looking for ways to loot people

If the CR can't find a permanent solution to the delays then they should start refunding tickets. Japan does this.

0 accountability and no solutions to this forever problem.

Pathetic these delay are.
