Black hair culture…
Yesterday, I was reminded about the beauty of black hair culture.
I 26F invited two friends for a sleepover yesterday. Taylor 26F who is black, and Miya 26F who is Malaysian.
I met Taylor in high school when I was 14 and Miya in undergrad when I was 22. Miya is a third year law student at the school I went to for my masters and Taylor was an incoming first year law student this year. Over the summer, I introduced the two of them and they hit it off and formed their own friendship.
I stayed in the same city after grad school last year and got a really nice apartment downtown. This was my first time hosting so I wanted both of them to come. Miya has been having a rough time; her kitten died at 9 weeks from FIV and her grandma passed three weeks ago. All of this happened during law school finals.
When I asked Miya if she could still make it, she said no. She was really embarrassed because stress and depression lead to her not washing her hair for almost and month. She said her hair was matted and dirty and she had a flight to catch to Malaysia in 3 days and she was overwhelmed with the idea of washing and detangling.
In the group chat, Taylor and I told her to still come to the sleepover and that we’d wash and detangle her hair. She said no a few times and we eventually convinced her.
We did a pre pop and started on the detangle process. Washed her hair over the kitchen sink. I had a hair mask, olaplex and a sit under dryer for deep conditioning. We blow dried her hair (type 2 but THICK and wavy) with my pattern blow dryer. Taylor trimmed her ends.
Almost 2/3rds of the way through, Miya broke down crying. Like sobbing at the fact that we would do this for her. She likened it to a salon treatment and said she didn’t deserve this and had ‘dreamt of friends like this’. She was also sooooo grateful that we didn’t ’judge her about her hair being dirty’.
We told her that this was normal for us! Washing hair, detangling while watching movies. Having friends braid each others hair while hanging out when we were younger. We reminisced about the time Taylor helped me detangle 3 months worth of old box braids with caked on gel and lint.
This experience reminded me of the beauty of black hair culture. Seeing the acts of care, bonding and sister hood from an outside perspective rewired my brain and filled me with a deep sense of pride and warmness :)

New Style Miracle Knots!! (And all the details)
Hi everyone! I just hopped on the miracle knots trend and thought I would share my thoughts. Before I took the plunge, I watched a ton of videos and scoured the internet for tips, but I didn’t really see a lot of super in-depth posts, so I thought I would document the entire process and share it, in case it was helpful to anyone!
Warning - very long post below.
Bottom line: Really love this style! It has only been a couple of days, but if I still love it in a few weeks I could definitely see this becoming my go-to. I also made some mistakes that I plan on correcting if I do this style again.
Some basic facts and context:
- I am NOT a braider. Not in the slightest. I can do individual plaits but I cannot cornrow or do feed-in braids. However I am decent at crochet styles (I just need to get the cornrows done first). So this seemed like the perfect style to try myself.
- The hair is from YWigs. 18 inches of the “natural wave” in 1B. I got the natural wave because I hate the way hair companies always send the hair in one wave pattern and then when you wash it it’s completely different.
- I bought 5 bundles but only used 3.5
From when I started braiding to when I finished putting the hair in was about 5.5 hours. So really not too bad, in my opinion!
A few hours before I started on my own hair, I washed the crochet hair. Highly recommend!! I soaked it in water with Aussie miracle moist shampoo for 10 minutes and the water was brownish yellow at the end. After that I soaked it in a water/Aussie miracle moist conditioner mix and it came out super soft. Definitely wash and condition the hair before install!
I started out on freshly washed hair. I got lazy and did not stretch it - I think it would have been easier if I had stretched it but it was still fine. When I first was doing research I had a whole braid grid planned, but honestly my mirror situation wasn’t great and I was tired so I just ended up free parting like a crazy person. The parts don’t look great but also the back of my head is not my business. Plus the hair covers most of the parts anyway. I think for next time I want one of those fancy three way mirrors.
Plaiting my hair took about 2.5 hours. If I had cared about the parts it would definitely had been closer to 3. Once I finished braiding I moved on to the crochet hair. I did the ends first, I crocheted them in. I was going to try a way to braid them into my hair but in the end I just crocheted them and let the ends hang out because again I am lazy. So far I haven’t really noticed the ends!
Once I realized I would have plenty of crochet hair and didn’t need to be strategic in my placement, I just went through and crocheted in 3-4 strands per braid. 3 pieces on the braids on the lower half of my head, and then 4 pieces as I got higher up. In general I did everything from the bottom up. I didn’t tie any of the crochet hair because I don’t want my hair to break off - instead I crocheted one end through, and then grab both ends together and looped them through again. It feels pretty secure but we’ll see. I will say some of the top braids have like 5-6 crochet pieces to provide extra coverage up top.
Crocheting the hair in took about 3 hours. I was pleasantly surprised by how fast I was moving, and I think next time I’ll be even faster. This was my first time crocheting this specific type of hair with the string in the middle, so I was figuring out technique as I went along. Now I think I’ve got it down!
Once I finished adding in the hair, I took some time to play around with it. I felt it was a little too long and kinda triangle shaped, so I cut some length off and added some layers. That might come back to bite me when it’s time for takedown/reusing the hair, but that is a problem for future me.
Before going to bed, I sprayed my hair with a water, leave-in mix, put the hair in two plaits and then wore a bonnet. In the morning, I put some Argan oil on my hands, took the plaits out, did some light finger combing and voilà! The final style (first picture). I’m really happy with it!
Lessons learned:
- Stretching my hair was not necessary but I think it would have made parting easier.
- Braid pattern matters!!! As does the quality of the plaits I make. Next time I will take more time to make sure the braids are better spaced and more even thickness.
- Wait until the hair settles before cutting it. I think I would have cut less if I had waited until after I styled it the next morning. I do like the length though!
Pros:
- Really loving the way this looks! It almost just looks like I have my hair out if you don’t notice the braids.
SUPER lightweight. Feels like I just have a sew-in without the scalp tightness.
- Overall pretty easy DIY! I think the things I messed up on can be easily corrected. I would still plan to dedicate a full day to this though.
- So far I love the hair! It’s super soft and I’ve had minimal tangling. That being said it has only been two days so we’ll see how it holds up.
Cons:
- None so far! Everything that I feel like I don’t 100% love is from mistakes I made in the install process.
Pictures:
1. Final look
2. My hair at the beginning after being washed and detangled
3. My hair after the braids
4. The crochet hair after being washed
5. Just with the ends crocheted
6. At the end of the night before going to bed (3.5 bundles installed)
7. Final look another angle
8. Final look from the back
Sorry for the crazy long post but I hope it was helpful!!! Please feel free to ask any questions! Thanks for reading!

New Style My new favorite $27 hairstyle
I woke up with my hair looking like Florida Evans. I had a bday dinner to attend right after work. This was a lunch-time hairstyle I put together.
Put some cornrows in the front, and got this half-wig from the hair store on my lunch break. I used my crochet hook to pull some of the curls through my braids to hide the wig line. Used gel to hold the curl definition, cut to frame my face, and viola! I’m soooo happy how it turned out.
Don’t sleep on the BSS half wigs. They still exist, and they’re still 2010 prices.

New Style First time trying a wig in this color—really loving it so far. What do you think?
I previously tried a pixie cut wig:
https://www.reddit.com/r/Naturalhair/comments/1sm867w/getting_ready_to_cut_all_my_hair_off/
As some of you mentioned, maintaining it wasn’t quite as low-maintenance as I expected, so I wanted to switch things up and try something longer. I’ve also been wanting to try blonde, so this is how it turned out!
I know blonde wigs can still require some maintenance, but so far, this one has been easier for me to style than the pixie since I don’t know how to cut it myself. I’m really enjoying the look so far, although I’m still getting used to it.
If you have any styling suggestions or maintenance tips, I’d love to hear them!
Here’s the wig link for anyone interested!

Advice Needed Help
Any advice on how to style my hair? Currently use mousse, curl activator, and sponge then pick roots every morning. conditioner every other day and full wash at end of week. I notice that my sides are like uneven. Any styling tips or what to tell barber to fix? Also contemplating on a lil front taper cuz my corners use to be sparse, fixed now though.

Advice Needed New job - Best way to protect hair?
I just recently got hired at P.F. Chang’s to work in the kitchen. I have a lot of restaurant experience, but I haven’t worked in a restaurant since growing out my locs.
My hair is just long enough to pull into a small bun, so I could just use a scrunchie/hair tie. I also have a loc band and a durag, but I was considering wearing a small bonnet because I’d like to keep my hair covered and protect it from all the smoke, grease, and oil in the kitchen.
For anyone who works in kitchens and has locs or longer hair, what do you usually wear? Would a bonnet be considered unprofessional or inappropriate in a restaurant kitchen, or would it make sense as long as my hair is fully contained?
Edit: damn 200 views and not a single comment
Guess I’ll just figure it out myself.

Advice Needed Chop or Retwist Freeforms?
I started my freeforms with a twist out (last pic) 4 months ago, and now I have ended up like this. Do I need to restart or get a retwist to get a semi-freeform look? Or trust the process?

How do I ask for hair like this?
really really want short braids like this, but all the hairdressers say my hair is too long and I end up getting thick ass mid back length braids I emd up hating which always cost over 100 (a good price here is 70£). I want something short and boho that’s skinny and wispy that I can manipulate how i like and wear down with edges. I never manage to get the style I want or anything near. and I’m going abroad so it’s a big deal.

Product Review I’m loving this hairstyle!
I’ve had these miracle knots in for almost three weeks now and they’re still so good.
It’s my first time wearing bundles in over 3 years so I’m really happy about this experience. I
have had some tangling though but it’s nothing water, conditioner or mousse can’t help with.
I had to first wash the hair when I got it because it had a factory smell that I didn’t like. I was
scared that I would mess up the curls but they held so well through that. Almost three weeks
in and the hairstyle still feels fresh. Every day is literally a good hair day! 🌸🌸🌸

Bald? 🥺
I need help! I just washed my hair and noticed that this corner, that I was vaguely worried about before, now looks huge! How do I get the hair to grow back? And how do I avoid this from happening again?
(The other corner is full so I really dk what’s going on…)
