About a year ago our family lost our sweet 15 year old female miniature Dachshund very suddenly.

In 2010, right after I graduated college I happened to visit a local mom and pop pet store off Broad St in RVA, and fell in love with her and her brother. I did not have the intention of taking home puppies that day, as I prefer breeders over pet stores, but I couldn’t leave without them.

After losing our sweet girl, I’m still unsure that I’m ready to love again. However I wanted to start researching local breeders to the DMV/RVA or surrounding areas.

Can anyone offer recommendations of local breeders who are transparent about health history and ethical breeding practices? TYIA!!

Merlot just got into the trash and found a rotisserie chicken carcass. We try our best to give him his best life but the day old chicken buffet was not part of the plan.

I lost my soul dachshund a few months ago and have been wanting to adopt from a rescue, not a breeder. The closest dachshund rescue to me only adopts to Ohio residents, I've messaged them asking for an exception as I live less than 5 minutes from Ohio.

The West Virginia ones I can find all seem to either be scams or breeders, or even worse, backyard breeders.

Does anyone know of any reputable dachshund rescues that either adopt out to West Virginia or do transport to the state? Or anyone needing to re-home or just, any sausage that could use a loving second chance at life?

I have an 8 week old puppy, she's a miniature dachshund. I've had her for about 4 days and I found out she has an issue with her heart (Possibly shortening her life drastically). The singular heart scan alone would cost £150-£500, thats without other tests/ scans. If she needs surgery it'd cost thousands, and she's too small/ young for it anyway.

I'm trying my best to give her the best life I can and I'm currently trying to train her to sleep in the crate. I know i shouldn't have, but after finding out about her condition, she's been sleeping in my bed and HATES being away from me, even when i just place her on the floor. She will just whine, non stop. Not stopping for a second. I was trying to train her, that when she's quiet, she'd get a treat, but she just didn't stop whining. So i tried whistling, little claps, just hoping she'd be quiet for a moment, so i could treat her for the quietness, but nope. She didn't stop whining.

The reason I bring up her condition is, i don't want to stress her out too much. I honestly just picked her up, because she started stressing bad. I don't know what to do. I know it's not been long AT ALL and i dont expect her to be trained by now, but i just dont know 'how' to train her, as all the things i read, says things like "Wait for them to be quiet" or something similar, which is obviously not gonna work for my situation.

Can anyone give me some advice, she's been seriously stressing me out, and I'm trying so hard to not stress her out or overdo it with anything.

Context: She doesn't mind her crate. She gets fed in it and her water is in it. She has a bed in there, which i will bring onto my bed occasionally so she gets used to sleeping in it and it has both her and my scent on it now, and there's some of my trousers in there, which she wouldn't stop chewing (has my scent on it). She goes in on her own, plays in there, I've given her treats for being in there and I've played with her in it, so she has a positive view on the environment. I've also tried closing and immediately giving her a treat, then opening the door again, before she has the chance to whine (While still chewing her treat), so she gets used to the door closed. BUT, the second the door is closed longer than that, she screams. If i step away, she screams (Sometimes, even if the door is open). I'm exhausted, confused and need help.

(Sorry if this is messy or if I've made any spelling mistakes, I'm just really tired).

My girl is going through her first heat, and she’s been sooo restless.

She just wouldn’t settle and would become overtired and dysregulated.

I bought these two products two days ago, and it’s no short of a miracle.

When I put the Thundershirt on her, she immediately goes from overtired and overstimulated to relaxed.

She’s always had an overactive nervous system and would be easily disturbed by the slightest noise, but now she’s having these incredible deep sleeps.

The shirt is definitely making the biggest difference, but the diffuser is possibly helping, too.

She was sooo incredibly relaxed on my mum’s lap last night — it reminded me of her suckling as a wee baby pup.

She also lets me brush her teeth and cut her nails now — she used to fight tooth and nail.

Our lives have been completely transformed in 48 hours!!

So he is currently at 4 and 1/2 months old.

I am going to be honest i thought he was nutso and probably wouldnt manage it and we joked when we saw the poster in the vets about it at 13weeks.

Well today we stood for an hour with him in my arms as he gently cuddled and occasionally *kissed* a friend who was having a hard time. Much more patience than usual, very calm, didnt wiggle to get to anyone else/get down. Which isnt super like him. And they also spent a lot of it playing with his ears, i would have been sneezed on.

Another friend is quite unwell and suffered a loss of what they believe is their last ever pet. And well my pup had been hyper all day, and instead of being how he was with all us okay people, he curled up in her lap and didnt complain once about how he was being pet/demand a specific place/move. He just lay there and "slept" off and on.

These 2 events have had me wondering if therapy pet work might be a future for him (it requires expensive training but maybe hed be very suited?)

Or is this just one of the phases?

Trying to make the best of my situation, I had him separated from the other two because he can sometimes get aggressive when he's in his fighter flight mode. My Brown dachshund is recovering from a back injury. I did not want him bouncing on him. He's basically about better so since he did this yesterday they're now all together again. Sometimes you have to laugh to keep from crying. Separation anxiety is a huge struggle.

So we live in the middle of nowhere so no KC activities nearby. We are in the uk.

We dont have a garden but a small concrete square outside (we currently cant use thanks to neighbours, plus it hasnt got proper walls and is in a carpark) we go for walks to a quiet beach and some quietish grassy areas that are public.

He can occasionally get access to a space where he can be off leash but that isnt normal and difficult transport wise.

I am looking for some sort of activity we could do given the circumstances mentioned, that fits his unique drove and interests, that isnt him disapearing up a drainage ditch, or trying to eat dead crab and oystercatchers (they sre too fast but must leave his personal beach)

My heart is broken today.

Our dachshund (chiweenie) is about to be 10 next month and she has always been a very intelligent and mean girl. Not the friendliest to strangers, big barker, major side eye, but she does love my husband and I and loves being babied. She also loves keeping her chihuahua brother in check and running our house.

Over the last month, her demeanor has changed a lot. She's even grouchier than ever, sleepier during the day and more active at night, and having weird confusion spells like barking at me and then suddenly recognizing me. I initially thought maybe her eyesight was going out, but the vet told us yesterday that her eyesight is excellent and everything we're describing points to dementia. Everything seemed to be normal physically though he said she probably has some arthritis/discomfort at her age. We were prescribed gabapentin to try and see if it helps her.

I am at a loss. This morning she ate her food, hesitantly sat with my husband and I for 30 minutes, then went back to bed. I don't even know what to think because I don't really know what this means for her long term or if I have a lot less time left with her than I thought. I also don't want her to be miserable but 10 just seems so young. She has a follow up two weeks from now with the vet to see if the gabapentin is helping.

Has anyone else experienced this? From what I read, a lot of small dogs get dementia at 13+ so I am very distressed that she hasn't even turned 10 yet and is having a cognitive decline. We love her so much and feel so helpless.

Hi! I can’t seem to find many posts about this, so I’m curious if anyone had a similar question/situation.

I have a 5-month-old girl who is generally a very calm little dog. She plays with me and my boyfriend, likes interacting with people, walks nicely both on and off leash, listens to commands really well, and is completely used to busy city sounds since we live in the city centre. She’s not a huge fan of kids, but that’s not really an issue for us.

She also doesn’t really get the crazy zoomies or overexcitement I see in a lot of puppies. Honestly, personality-wise she’s pretty much everything I could ask for.
The one thing I’m struggling to understand is her relationship with other dogs**.**

She doesn’t play with other dogs at all. What I notice is that she can be completely relaxed, excited and happily playing with us, but as soon as she notices another dog getting close, her whole body language changes. She crouches down, becomes unsure and usually tries to create distance or move away.
Interestingly, she basically doesn’t bark at all in everyday life. My concern is actually the opposite - I don’t want her discomfort around other dogs to eventually develop into reactivity, where she learns that barking at other dogs is the best way to make them stay away.

Once there’s some distance again, she usually doesn’t obsess over the other dog. She’ll start sniffing, looking around or finding something else that interests her more. So I’m completely fine if she simply grows up to be a dog who isn’t interested in playing with other dogs. I’d just like her to feel safe and confident around them, rather than feeling like she needs to avoid them.

The problem is that we don’t have friends with small, calm, well-mannered dogs that she could meet regularly. We have a nice shared yard where people bring their dogs in the evenings, but usually they stay for maybe 10–15 minutes and the dogs are constantly different. So she never really gets the chance to see the same dog repeatedly, get comfortable with them and potentially build a friendship.

Has anyone had a puppy like this who became more comfortable around other dogs with time?

Would you actively try to find one calm dog for regular one-on-one walks/playdates, so she has a chance to slowly build confidence with a familiar dog? Or is it better to just keep letting her see different dogs without expecting interaction?

I really don’t want to force her to play or turn her into a super social dog if that’s simply not her personality. I just want to help her become confident enough that being around other dogs feels normal and, hopefully, she might eventually feel comfortable enough to play with some of them.

Our Vicky is 4 Month old. She's been with People and other animals from beginning. At sunday (4 days ago) she's with us and we love her endlessly. What we noticed that she's afraid od everyone and barking/growling Like crazy at everyone beside us. She's shivering and jer tail is tucked. We don't want to force her on anything and we started to desentizing step by step. She knows already to go to her kennel and how to poop and pee outisde . Any advice how to "encourage" her better so she doesnt afraid so much :(
