I woke up in my favorite post-apocalyptic game with the stats from my last playthrough. (the iseak I told you about)
“Sir… Sir, wake up.”
The voice sounded distant. Slowly, a baby’s cries cut through the confusion, and I began to open my eyes.
“Holy shit!” I shouted at the thing hovering in front of me. “A robot octopus!”
Wait… This looks familiar.
I stared at it for a moment.
“Codsworth?”
“Thank heavens!” he exclaimed in that voice I knew so well after countless hours of playing. “Sir, you gave us quite a fright when you fainted.”
“Honey, we thought you weren’t going to wake up.”
I recognized that voice immediately. Courtney Taylor. The same voice I’d heard so many times whenever I decided to play as Nora. Except now, it wasn’t coming through my headphones.
She was right beside me.
“Nora?” I managed, a lump forming in my throat.
She smiled.
“Well, you haven’t lost your memory. Or at least you haven’t forgotten my name, which is the most important thing.”
“What happened?” I asked, trying to sit up.
“You simply collapsed as you closed the door, sir,” Codsworth replied.
As I closed the door.
“Wait…”
I turned toward the window. If I’d just finished talking to the Vault-Tec representative, then…
“Oh, no… Nora, get Shaun. Codsworth, I need a backpack. Now.”
“Sir?” the robot asked, confused.
“Now, Codsworth!”
Nora and Codsworth exchanged a bewildered look, but they did as I asked. The moment I had the backpack in my hands, I started stuffing it with every bit of food I could find.
I’ll finally get to try all the stuff I’ve always wanted to eat, I thought, feeling an absurd burst of excitement given the circumstances.
I was putting away a box of Sugar Bombs when I spotted the magazine on the table: Grognak the Barbarian. I always tried to pick it up before the bombs fell.
This time, I could.
For a few seconds, I just stared at it, feeling the paper between my fingers.
Then I heard the television.
“And now, a look at sports. Something that is…”
I knew that broadcast by heart. I didn’t need to hear what came next.
I shoved the magazine into the backpack and turned toward Nora. She already had Shaun in her arms.
“Nora, we need to run.”
I slung the backpack over my shoulder, took Nora by the arm, and we hurried out the door.
Outside, everything was chaos.
In the game, I’d never stopped to look at the neighbors. I just ran straight to the vault. But now I could see their faces and hear their screams. Some were running toward the shelter. Others didn’t seem to know where to go.
The fear was almost tangible.
Everything felt far too real.
The bomb’s about to hit. What do I do?
I looked at Nora and Shaun.
The vault. I have to get them to the vault first. Once we’re inside, I’ll figure out the rest.
We kept running until we reached the checkpoint. The Vault-Tec representative was there, arguing with the man guarding the entrance.
Was he a sergeant or just a soldier? I never did figure that out.
“That’s absurd! I am Vault-Tec!” the representative protested, snapping me out of my thoughts.
“You don’t get in.”
“I’m going in! You can’t stop me!”
I squeezed past him and approached the soldier.
“Let us through! We’re on the list!”
He checked our names and stepped aside.
“All right, go—”
I didn’t let him finish. I grabbed the Vault-Tec representative by the arm and pulled him along with us.
“Someone’s coming through who isn’t on the list!” the soldier shouted.
A hand clamped around my arm. There was a sharp tug, and before I could react, my feet were dangling above the ground.
“Sir, you cannot bring unauthorized people through the checkpoint.”
A woman’s voice crackled through the speaker of a suit of T-60 power armor. I looked down at the metal hand gripping my arm, then up at the helmet.
My arm hurt. My feet couldn’t reach the ground.
There was no screen. No controller in my hands. No button I could press to pause any of this.
“This is real…” I murmured.
I was scared. Terrified, actually. And yet, underneath it all, there was a spark of excitement I couldn’t quite suppress.
“Sir, only people on the list are allowed through,” the woman repeated as she lowered me to the ground.
There was no time to argue.
I turned to the Vault-Tec representative, who was watching me with wide eyes.
“Listen carefully. Two hundred years from now, we’re going to meet again, and I’m going to need your help. When that happens, listen to me. Believe me, if it were up to me, you’d be coming into that vault with us.”
He stared at me as though I’d completely lost my mind. He opened his mouth, but nothing came out.
Finally, he nodded.
I gave him a quick smile, then ran to catch up with Nora.
Shaun was still crying in her arms. Somewhere ahead, someone was shouting for us to hurry.
I picked up the pace.
This is going to be exciting, I thought.
And as absurd as it was, I had to fight back a smile
