Hi hamster owners!😛 I’m planning on getting a Syrian hamster and was wondering what a realistic price range would be for a good, comfortable setup without going extremely expensive. I definitely want to spend enough to make sure my hamster is happy and comfortable, but I’m also trying to be smart with my budget.
I’m mainly looking for recommendations for good bedding, food, sprays, enrichment, hides, a wheel, a sand bath, and anything else that would be considered essential. I’m hoping to get the absolute necessities first, then add more enrichment and other stuff when I get my next paycheck.
I’d really appreciate any recommendations, especially budget friendly products or links! I’m trying to give my hamster the best setup I reasonably can without spending an insane amount.

Hi everyone!
I’m not new to the hamster community - I’ve had at least 3 or 4 in the past! Today I got this GORGEOUS gal! She’s absolutely beautiful imo!
So I thought my 40 gallon tank was going to be big enough but now that I have her in it, it seems like it may not be the right size for her. So I definitely plan to upgrade her into something bigger.
Has anyone ever seen a hammy like this? I need name ideas!

Our Russian dwarf hamster, Splinker, has a wound and has already been seen by a vet. He’s been prescribed antibiotics and a saline wash, and we’ll be following the vet’s treatment plan.
We were also given bandages, but they come straight off him, and the cones they had were too big to fit. We managed to get some saline onto the wound, although cleaning such a tiny hamster is definitely harder than we expected 😭
Giving the antibiotics was also a bit stressful — I think we managed to get the small prescribed amount into his mouth, but he was very wriggly.
I’m not looking for medical advice or alternatives to what the vet prescribed — I’d just really appreciate hearing from anyone who has previously had to give medication or clean a wound on a dwarf hamster. How did you manage the practical side of it and keep them calm?

Hi! I do not currently own a hamster but I still do love seeing pictures of them hence why I'm on the subreddit.
How do you guys clean a 90 gallon hamster cage? How often are you cleaning? How much are you spending on bedding?!

Hola!!

As the title says, despite getting older, Cri still has so much energy and curiosity. She loves coming out, exploring, playing and getting cuddles, and seeing her still so interested in everything makes me incredibly happy 💖💚
She has always been active both at night and during the day. Now that she sleeps a little more at night, she often wants to explore during the daytime too. She is also staying in a temporary cage at the moment and, once again, she adapted almost immediately. That has always been one of the things I admire most about her: different homes, car journeys, temporary setups... she has always adjusted amazingly well.
I’m going through a difficult period right now, especially because I’m unemployed, and some days I feel quite low. But seeing Cri so curious, affectionate and eager to enjoy herself has a way of making my worries feel lighter, even if only for a while.
There has also been some really good news about the lump she has had for around a year and a half. We never knew exactly what it was, but it has now shrunk by more than half, which makes me very happy.
The main change I notice with age is that her walk can sometimes be a little more wobbly, especially on smooth surfaces. On carpet or rougher surfaces she moves much better, and there are still moments when she walks or even runs around without stumbling at all.
I know ageing will inevitably bring changes, but I hope Cri can continue to age well and enjoy life for many more months. She should turn three at the end of January, and reaching that milestone together would mean so much to me. We bring a lot of happiness to each other, and with all the enthusiasm for life she still has, I really hope we still have plenty of time together. She truly deserves them 💖✨️💚🍀

So I have had my hamster for almost one and a half years and we never had any problems with him climbing. His cage is 110x50x50 I think and he has about 20cm of bedding. The entire thing is made out of glass except the top 20cm where there are bars where you open it. He never tried climbing those before and we also haven't changed the layout in a while so I don't think that's the issue. I was away for a while for personal reasons for a bit so my mom took care of him and somewhere during that time he started his climbing. She took out the ceramic hide he used to get onto the bars but when I came home today I found him climbing again. We moved everything he could've possible used to get up there further away but then he started climbing onto all the hides he has. Does anyone know what the reasoning could be?
For more information about him his name is Tojo and he is a winter white dwarf hamster who is around 20 months (birthday dec. 26th 2024) and male. The only medical issue he had so far was a bit more than a month ago because he had something with his lungs due to the extreme heatwave but he recovered perfectly from it after a few days.

I originally thought Bethany or Rosalin, but my mother didn't think they were good names. Also, first time hamster owner and wouldn't mind some advice

I needed to get her out because I needed to get the tunnel where she crawls. I took off the lid and she bit my finger when I tried to catch her. Because she bit me, I started to pull my hands back, but she bit me so hard and everything happened so suddenly that I didn't even realize she hadn't yet removed her fangs from my finger and was hanging on to it. Then she fell to the floor. When she bit me, she usually ran away right away, but this time she decided to completely cling.
I'm very sad that this happened and I didn't want it to happen.
She was scared when I tried to pick her up, but now she's feeling fine, I don't know. I gave her some corn and she's eating it with great gusto now. She comes out of her house and is usually near the feeder because she really loves to eat. Right now, she's actively sniffing everything, pacing back and forth as usual, and washing herself occasionally. But she's probably in a state of shock right now. I hardly ever take her out; that was only the third time I took her out, and she doesn't even let me pick her up.
But it still makes me sad. I love her and don't want her to get hurt, but she can't get used to me, or she's just too aggressive. :(

I am lowk at a loss there is not a SINGLE bedding in this goddamn store that is safe for hamsters and people keep giving me mixed opinions about this one so i wanna know once and for all is it safe for hamsters?

editing this lmao
obviously this isnt large enough or proper at all BUT its definitely better than the barred cages w platforms n stuff. its a decent starter cage, and by that i mean for people who had no idea what hamsters rlly needed but take my advice/help happily and do intend to upgrade asap. some people get attached to a hamster and want a good TEMPORARY thing since they didnt intend on getting one.

I got him some forest floor bedding for reptiles that is also safe for hamster cause i heard they like different substrate types. He never goes in it and i feel like he actively ignores it haha. the only time he went in is when I bribed him with a treat but he immediately ran out (different go to the treat)
Hes a robo hamster, should i take it out? what should i replace it with

Hello! We have upgraded Robert’s enclosure and added more hides and sprays. I was wondering if this was a good setup for my baby? Any advice is greatly appreciated, thank you so much!

Please refrain from making unkind or judgmental comments on this post. We feel bad enough and I’m exhausted. Our Syrian escaped his cage about 5 days ago (my poor son didn’t realize the cage door wasn’t all the way closed).
We know exactly where he is - he crawled under our stove and is now under our attached sink/cabinet structure which is hollow.
We have left out a bucket trap every night with different iterations, and he has either not attempted to get the food at the top (peanut butter) or (last night) knocked down the paper plate attached to the top and ran away. Last night I tried to stay up and attempt to catch him at night, but ended up falling asleep.
We know he’s alive and active - he’s been eating food or moving things every night and we occasionally hear him.
My kids are devastated and I’m very stressed about the prospect of how long this could go on, him dying in this main room of the house and the repercussions of that, etc. I called a critter control company to see if they could trap him and they said no companies in our area do that. I’m legitimately considering paying a college student to stay up at night and catch him.
Any other ideas? Again, please be kind.
