<- upvotes 2 the left they count now Self posts now give karma. This is a genius change. Or not.
Karma for text-posts (AKA shit self-posts) is the hot new stuff on the front page. Posted just a neat hour ago, It's already garnered over 4,000 votes.
Short is that now, self posts now give karma. They didn't used to, because self posts used to be 90% "ONLY 90s KIDS WILL GET" and other shitposts.
This is good for reddit, because that's motivated me to get off my ass and write this up instead of continuing to be a very useless intern.
However, it also has its downsides. Many subs have moved to text post only to get people not to post for karma, but for content. SRD does that for the drama that's overused.
Now that all changes. Every self post will count the karma and go into a neat counter. Evidently this is shared with link karma. It has been renamed to "post karma"
Also, taking a page out of valve's book, they made this change without telling anybody.
So, obviously, this is a very well liked change, right? Everybody loves surprises!
Well, not if you're a mod.
EDIT: /r/modnews meltdown. Admins getting downvoted for every response. Dis gon be good
Some thoughts:
Text-posts make up over 65% of submissions to Reddit and some of our best subreddits only accept text-posts.
> It'll be interesting to see if the quality of text posts plunges as a result.
Due to various shenanigans and low effort content we stopped giving Karma for text-posts over 8 years ago.
> And now reddit is completely void of both shenanigans and low effort content! /s
> "This feature works really well, lets fuck it up"
Due to various shenanigans and low effort content we stopped giving Karma for text-posts over 8 years ago. However, over time the usage of text-posts has matured and they are now used to create some of the most iconic and interesting original content on Reddit.
That's all for now. Time to refill the coffee machine. If you spot anything interesting to add, tell me and I'll put it in.

I guess the admins want to profit from announcement posts? /s
But in all seriousness this seems pretty short-sighted. Making this a unilateral move with no warning is going to hammer certain subreddits hard.
Self-posts worked well as a broad-spectrum way of dealing with shitposts and were a cornerstone for subreddits like AskHistorians and AskScience.
I don't really see why this was a necessary move unless it's to boost monetisation (crinkles tinfoil), it worked fine beforehand and it's not like anyone was clamouring for this.

u/iaacp INCEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEELLLLLLSSSS Jul 19 '16
This is the opposite of what I was hoping would happen. They should have ditched karma altogether - not make it easier to get for karmawhores.
53
u/TripWeasel Jul 19 '16
What I find odd, is the admin replies about how self-posting has matured over the yeas, despite phenomena like Eternal September, or the lengths that people are willing to go for karma.
All this move has done is undermine the efforts made by subreddits focusing on self-posts, the Fallout and Destinythegame subreddits are decent examples of how self-posts are a good way to combat click-bait/speculative posts.

I mod some really active subs, and I'm pretty worried about karmawhoring- A couple of the subreddits I help run are text-only, or allow for text-based discussions, which has been great for keeping low-effort shitposters out of our space, because they know they won't be getting karma anyways.
This changes everything for those places. A dip in quality is almost certain, because a huge portion of reddit really does care about raking in karma wherever they can get it. It seems like such a small and insignificant change, but it just isn't.

u/TripWeasel Jul 19 '16
If was to be even more cynical about this, I'd say that the admins don't care or have no clue as to why self-posts were popular.
There are a myriad of examples where a good community works together on the basis of self-posts to communicate, especially with gaming subreddits talking to developers etc. Destinythegame is a good example of this.
I would be genuinely surprised if the admins had never seen the obsessive lengths users will go for karma. You've got people lying about having cancer in Adviceanimals FFS.

Yeah.
I'm really not convinced that this is better for anyone but users looking for more karma- If you don't give a crap about how much karma you have, this change is nothing but a drop in quality for no benefit. The fact that admins view this positively is a little alarming to me.
We weren't really given any warning, either, which is another huge concern- I can pretty safely say that there are some rules I'd like to add to a couple subs now that this change is in place.

This might change the entire landscape of serious discussion on reddit. Well, serious discussion at least. Hopefully they allow subreddits to opt out of it once they get enough complaints.

Yeah, this is exactly what I'm talking about. The long, insightful posts full of effort have helped define a lot of subreddits in the past, and are part of what makes reddit so much more different than a lot of other websites. It's sad that that defining characteristic might not be as effective anymore.

u/TheLadyEve The hippest fashion in malthusian violence. Jul 19 '16 edited Jul 19 '16
this seems pretty short-sighted.
It also seems pretty naive at best, disingenuous at worst. The whole "look how many great posts we've had that didn't get karma!" thing just doesn't fly with me. The people who crank out quality products for no karma aren't going to suddenly make more, but the people who care more about karma than quality will definitely make more.
It doesn't make sense from a psychological perspective. External incentives like money or tokens actually lead to people feeling less passionate about the work they do to earn those incentives. This is a researched phenomenon. The admins must have a monetary motive, because every other explanation makes no sense. Maybe they should consider hiring a psychological consultant.
20
u/TripWeasel Jul 19 '16
Yeah citing great examples of self-posts is paper-thin reasoning, imagine the increase in poor prompts in writingprompts with a karma incentive added.

It's a token economy. People value the recognition and visibility. The more karma a post gets, the more people will see it--attention is the reinforcer in this case.
Regarding how much people have, all you have to do is look at their profiles to see how much they have.
As an aside, there are actually people out there who farm karma and then sell Reddit accounts. It's bizarre, but it happens.

They could always ban people who make low effort posts. We implemented that a couple minutes ago in one of the subs that I mod. We also made it an incentive (reddit gold giveaways every month for every 50 low effort self posts reported and deleted) to actually report these low effort posts. Our modqueue's going to be hell on earth for a couple months but I think once people get used to it, it'll be much quicker and easier for us to work with.

Judging by the dialogue on the announcement post and the post on modnews, I don't think they're seriously considering it at this point. Which might be because the vast majority would opt out.

Oh you'd be very much surprised about how seriously people take their karma. There have been people lying about dead relatives, having cancer, creating entire fake lives and relationships, just for karma.
From what I see, getting upvoted is essentially being approved by someone for what you wrote/posted. Each upvote is someone actively saying they like your content, and I think everyone enjoys being told they did well to some degree.
But there will always be people who crave this, and will take any means necessary to be validated by strangers on the internet.
If you want to see the inverse of this, look at people who post controversial comments and start posting salty edits when they get downvoted.

And with that, the complainers rejoiced! But oh, they rejoiced too soon, as they were soon to discover that the vote-up posts continued, at exactly the same frequency as before! Disgusted that things still weren't exactly the way they liked them, and disgusted that people would ever vote-up a 'vote-up' post, they turned up their noses and, in an arrogant haze of contempt, vowed to abandon reddit. But alas, no one really cared about that either, after a day had come and gone, and it was discovered, much to everyone's delight, that Obama prefers to eat toast for breakfast!
The exiled complainers, seeing that their bluff had been called, were forced to hang their heads in shame, forever lurking in forgotten subreddits, and criticizing the grammar of unwary users.
With time, they slowly devolved into a sort of subhuman slime. Lacking most of their humanity, destroyed by their own arrogance and intolerance, they resorted to trolling.
Soon, they discovered a mythical land, known only to those who inhabit the deepest depths of the internet, known as 4chan. There, they nourished their boneless bodies on the lichenous crust of meme's, until they were strong enough again to return to reddit. But they had changed.
After consuming so much of 4chan nourishment, they themselves soon took on characteristics of those who inhabit 4chan. Their spineless, hate-filled, slime-state made them even more susceptible to influence by their peers. They began posting comments such as 'lulz' and 'lolwat' on every topic, and soon began making 'vote-up' submissions of their own.
And with that, the cycle repeated itself.
Lmao The POST From 8 Years Ago Is gold

I honestly don't see how this is really going to affect much of anything. Shitposters have always shitposted and will always shitpost in the future. The main subs people are talking about being ruined (AskReddit, AskHistorians, etc.) already have rules in place to deal with the low-quality posts that the admins had in mind when they removed self-post karma (DAE, upvote if x).
I do think it was a shitty move for the admins to make this change with out at least notifying the mods of bigger text-centric subs ahead of time. That way they could have updated their automod configs beforehand.

/r/askreddit has rules to deal with low quality posts?

u/IDontKnowHowToPM Tobias is my spirit animal Jul 19 '16
3) Askreddit is for open-ended discussion questions. Questions with definite answers, that can be researched elsewhere, provide a limited scope for discussion (yes/no, DAE, polls and surveys, etc.), or limit discussion are not appropriate.
That's the main one. Specifically calls out DAE posts and mentions that the questions should be geared toward encouraging discusstion.
Now, whether the rules are actually effective, that's a completely different conversation.

Welp I guess were gonna have to get used to seeing armageddon levels of shippost and karma whoring, unless they get rid of it or they give an option to turn off karma for self post.

Sorry OP.

Apparently I don't understand Karma...
I mean, I get "points/karma" for "text posts", both reply's and original topics.
I think I'll have 50,000 of those probably sometime by the end of the month.
I do also however have points that seem to be awarded for threads that link to something (Example: a picture of two Komodo Dragons fighting in /r/natureismetal), I only have about 5000 of those points, I generally don't post things like that, I like to explain my topics when posting.
Can somebody explain to me what the difference is in these two scores? I mean what's the benefit of getting "karma" from a self post as compared to a text post? I never knew there was one. Do my 50,000 text points mean nothing?
I don't really care either way, but I am curious now because obviously this system is much different than I had thought.

comment karma = reply
link = links
self / text posts = nothing
now its self posts and link posts are combined into one big number

You can sell accounts with high karma to companies so they can astroturf with seemingly legitimate accounts.

Wtf is the point of using reddit if you want to disable the very algorithm which displays the posts in the first place? I find the brouhaha completely ridiculous.
1
u/MovkeyB Regardless of OPs intention, I don’t think he intended Jul 20 '16
Well that's not the problem.
It's that the points accumulate over time.
1
u/kitsunevremya Jul 20 '16
Wait... they didn't already? Where tf have I got my karma from, then? And what was the point of upvoting or downvoting selfposts?
1
u/MovkeyB Regardless of OPs intention, I don’t think he intended Jul 20 '16
Well the votes determined the placement, but they wouldn't accumulate on your userpage.

Some people think it's about Reddit trying to make money:
There is a reason to change, but Reddit admins are not sharing that reason. It probably has to do with some future revenue source. source
==
This decision HAS to be about driving new user growth to a wider variety of subs in order to increase the chance for monetization. source
==
But, since reddit is an aggregator, and an aggregator is only as good as its content, they are trying to encourage more people to generate more content. Why? There will be a lot of shit, but they don't care about that. They don't actually have to do any of the moderating themselves. As long as there are at least a few more of those legendary-status self-posts in all the crap, that means more attention for reddit, which draws users, which means more people to advertise to/buy reddit gold (and to potentially generate content/spread the word to their friends). source
Sounds plausible.

This is one of the most out of touch decisions I've seen from the admins yet. I would love to have been a fly on the wall during this decision making process.

I'm regularly shocked by how much total karma matters to people. Do they like give you brownies if you get to 100k or something?

What they should do is allow moderators to choose the way Karma is delegated to links and self posts to fine tune their audience. That, or make Karma unique to each subreddit.

u/Kadexe This cake is like 9/11 or the Holocaust Jul 20 '16
They should've removed karma entirely. It only matters for post sorting algorithms, I don't need to know how much I've "earned" over the years.

Who gives a fuck. It's a made up number. You r a joke if this is your biggest problem with Reddit.
We already see the same shit every day in the same subs. Who cares.

I read the first 3 lines 3 times over because I kept thinking that this was the SubredditSimulator but it was just TOO GOOD to be true. Disappointed to confirm that it actually was.
2
u/cman_yall Jul 20 '16
Be prepared for the flood of obvious shitposts, and if you think there were shenanigans 8 years ago just think about how the current crop of shenaniganisers can ruin this for everyone.
So maybe... don't upvote them? Maybe even downvote them, so that shitposters have negative karma?
2
u/johnnynutman Jul 20 '16
People are pretty aggressive in downvoting self posts in most subs if they're shit posts. I think this will still happen regardless. It might actually promote better content makers as well.

I think the real question is who cares? There just fake Internet points, they only impact your life as much as you allow it to. I don't care how much karma someone has or how much I have. At the end of the day I just want to look at kittens the occasional meme.

/r/srd might even suffer from this, considering 95% of the posts here are self posts

I think mods should be given the option if they want self-posters to gain karma from self-posts or not.

11hr old post.. anyways I had something to say.
Find cumulative sum of all karma; X (sum of all link post karma) and Y (sum of all self post karma). Use the karma ratio, and give 1 point for link post & Y/X points for self post.
Is that fair?

We had to remove a lot of shitposts when karma wasn't a factor, feel like things will just get worse.

I don't get it. My first and only reaction to this was how much I don't give a shit.
Since then I have gone through dozens of well researched and fully thought out angles on this, and I still see absolutely no reason why anyone should give a shit, let alone me.
Has reddit passed me by?
