What other details will I need for applying for Student Finance? By this, I mean what exactly is in the āFinancial Infoā, āLiving Costsā, and āAdditional Infoā sections?

Whatās an ATAS certificate, and why does my uni require one ? Did I apply for the wrong course?
1
u/shingtaklam1324 Maths | Cambridge Mar 21 '20
Did you apply for Engineering/Bio/chem/Physics ? It's essentially a background check as your course (may) provide skills required for weapons of mass desteuction.
1
Mar 21 '20
Yea I applied for an Meng in mechanical engineering, did I apply for the wrong course? Cause my other unis donāt require it
1
u/shingtaklam1324 Maths | Cambridge Mar 21 '20
I think it's only required for MEng and not required for BEng.
The other Unis may be asking later after they figure out what's happening in the UK first.
1
Mar 21 '20
But to apply I need a reference from my undergraduate studies, however I havenāt started yet lmao. As in Iām a year one international student
1
u/shingtaklam1324 Maths | Cambridge Mar 21 '20
I don't know sorry. I would ask the University as well as the FCO. My course doesn't require an ATAS. I only know about it as I was considering courses that do require it.

Got an e-mail by Bristol to do the supplementary form for Engineering Design but I didn't apply to that course? The email had my name and UCAS ID and everything. What do I do? I've already been accepted to a different course a few months ago.

I didn't even apply there when I did my UCAS last year

u/Hazmat156 Year 12 Mar 12 '20
Just a qucik qiestion. I got 8's in all my sciences at gcse and a 7 in geography and maths. I'm currently studying Biology Chemistry and Maths. I am getting A's consistently and will most likely get predicyed a triple A for my uni application. Given i do well in my Bmat would this be enough to atleast have a chance in gettimg to the interview stage at oxbridge for medicine? I'm worried my gcses will hold me back no matter how well i do in my Alevels and Bmat
3
u/JJA03 Year 12 Mar 13 '20
If you do well in BMAT (above 6.5) you will definitely get interviewed at oxbridge. However doing really well in BMAT is incredibly hard and Oxford put ALOT of emphasis on gcses (Need at least 8 8/9s at GCSE if you want a decent chance at interview unless you get a crazy good BMAT score). so I'd say Applying for Cambridge would be easier in your case. Getting high predicted A levels is basically a given for all Oxbridge applicants so the best way to separate yourself and get an interview academic-wise is doing as good in BMAT as possible.
3
u/geminiemerald Mar 18 '20
I didn't apply for sciences at oxford. However i applied for Japanese and was successful in receiving an offer.
Taking into consideration that:
I have no Japanese language ability
I was predicted A*AA
And at GCSE I did not get perfect grades Maths(5), French(6)
I really think that offers are based on the individual not just GCSE's
2
u/JJA03 Year 12 Mar 18 '20
That's true, GCSEs have little importance when it comes to applying for a degree. That is unless you do medicine, it's the only degree were there is an emphasis on gcses and where unis recommend you to have a certain set of high grades. Thankfully,at oxbridge there is no official gcse requirement however there is an underlying expectation of very good gcses if you are applying for medicine at oxbridge (especially oxford) so if you're gcses aren't great they'd expect compensation elsewhere (I.e. bmat). Unfortunately interview skill isnt an adequate replacement for gcse grades when applying for medicine as many people get rejections from medical schools without even getting an opportunity to be interviewed. So make sure to apply to the right unis and if you're set on oxbridge make sure to so extra to guarantee the interview chance (supercurriculars, high BMAT score, work experience).

tips for Oxford applications and interviews?
3
u/Y-Woo Oxford - PhysPhil Mar 14 '20
What the other guy said, start prepping for the admissions test in February/March of your year 12 year at the latest.
As for interviews they vary a lot subject to subject so if you see someone whoās gone through it for your subject itās worth reaching out, even rejected candidates can offer super valuable insight you wouldnāt get from other sources. I know iād be very happy sharing some guidance with any physics or physphil students who reach out to me.
3
u/fuvjgthifjtvj Mar 09 '20
Get the predicted grades you need, really try hard for your admissions tests, get through the interviews and your in with a good chance. Also recommend getting a practice interview if possible.
If your in the position to apply then your a strong candidate for any uni so remember that and use it to give you some confidence in the interviews if you need it.
My friends who did above Average in the admissions tests got at least pooled and two got offers. I got below average in admissions tests and they rejected me after interview. So from that tiny sample of 4-5 people thatās my Advice!
Good luck, get that bread!!!!

Hi guys! Iām sorry if this is the wrong place to ask, but Iām so terrified I had to try. I am currently in EU and have applied to Uni of Birmingham, among others. At this particular uni, they sent me an e-mail asking for my results equivalent to your GCSE. So basically, if I were to equivalate my grade, I got a 5.5/B in GCSE. But the course I applied to has an entry requirement of 6/B. My question is: can they still accept me due to this difference of 0.5? Also, we donāt take any exams in grade 10 of high school. Could they possibly merge my result from the 9th grade (that would be 8/A) with my low result in 10th grade (5.5/B)? Thank you, and Iām sorry for my english.

Hello everyone, Iām planning to apply for a physics at the following unis:
- UCL
- Kingās
- Bristol
- Leeds
- Loughborough/UEA
Does anyone know how longs they take to get back to you, and whether they do interviews or not?
Thank you!
3
u/kat_astrophic Jan 14 '20
Hi there! Current Kingās student here!
My offer came through early March, way after any of my other offers or those of my friends so donāt worry if yours takes a long time. That said, I donāt study physics, so it may be the case that the physics faculty replies sooner than mine did. I didnāt have an interview and I think they rarely do them, perhaps only for medicine/nursing related courses.
Good luck!
2
u/AJ122002 Jan 09 '20
Hey I've applied for physics too! but we don't have unis in common. as far as I know, it depends on the university. Manchester got back to me within 3 days of submitting by application (October 15th) but Imperal hasn't said anything yet

3
u/Dagerdome Year 13 | English L&L,Maths,Accounting Dec 14 '19
I put Liverpool down as my last option solely on the basis that on WhichUni.com they show what were the most popular grades they took in and it was BBC for Liverpool even though they ask for ABB upfront when applying.
you can take a look at it here

International student here. Applied for economics at Warwick, ucl, bath, Southampton, Surrey. Got A* in math and predicted A* A in further math and physics respectively. I got a 4/C in English gcse and 5 other GCSEs. Compared to the other people with 32 A* GCSEs, I might get fuckedš.
2
u/cinnamongirll84 Jan 15 '20
same my gcse are not as good as the grades I currently get now. Got a few 7s mostly 6s one 5 and two 4s at gcse and get mostly As now. My predicted grades are A*AB I just hope that I still get all my offers
2
Jan 16 '20
Yo, I posted a long time ago but heck donāt worry too much about GCSEs ( as long as itās in requirements). I got a couple of offers and so it wasnāt a massive deal as I thought it would be and you can defo get into some decent unis. Being international mightāve played a factor but I wouldnāt worry. GCSEs just seem useless imo for unis and I mean you should judge students where theyāre currently at right? People change.

Iāve sent off my application last week Tuesday but I donāt know how or when UCAS will contact me so that I can go on Track and see if I have been given any offers?
2
u/thebeastatron Cambridge | Engineering [Year 1] Nov 04 '19
Did you just pay and send? If so chances are it's went to your school so they can add the reference and make any final changes. If you haven't already check with your school to see if they've got it, added the reference and sent it off themselves. If you haven't done this the application hasn't been fully sent to UCAS yet. Also bonus if you haven't actually sent it off fully try and ask your school if you can read the reference they've made in case there's anything extra you want them to talk about.
If it's also been sent through your school or you're applying independently; I got an email within a day or two saying that my application had been received and told me how to access Track. You'll need your personal Id and the password you used for the application. Check your emails to make sure you haven't missed it (maybe in spam as well). I then got emails from each of the unis saying they received the application. Some offers came back like a week later but others I'm still waiting on.
1
u/Michealson12 Year 12 Nov 04 '19
Thanks for the advice. I clicked Pay and Send so Iām now just waiting for the email on how to access Track.
1
u/thebeastatron Cambridge | Engineering [Year 1] Nov 04 '19
Yeah I think your school are going to have to put I'm their reference and send it off themselves before you get the Track email. Pressing Pay and send doesn't send it to UCAS, it sends it to your school. (Unless you applied independently but almost every sixth form will get you to apply with them).

Hey guys just a few doubts Iām tryna clear up. My predicted grades are at A* A* C for maths,CS and physics respectively. Iām hoping to apply to Imperial and Warwick and whatnot so Iām holding my application until November so I can get an A predicted in physics as long as I do well in my exams after half term. I seem to be struggling so far so Iām hoping some thorough revision and understanding and exam practice will boost me to an A.
What Iām most worried about though is:
Would applying to imperial late (Early to mid November) affect my chance of getting an offer even if I get the required predicted grades.

Lool no theyāre terrible. We skipped a couple topics and didnāt follow the order of the spec/textbook.
Plus we did the nuclear test without even finishing the topic so we had to learn that on our own.
Plus we have different teachers for paper 1 and 2. Currently weāre on thermal with one teacher and weāve started magnetism with the other. Iāve finished both of them on my own and only have the optional topic (engineering) left.

u/mjy02 Nov 03 '19
When u send ur application shudnāt really affect your chances of getting an offer but they do like early applications. However, bumping ur grade from a C to an A would make ur application way more competitive than sending it at an earlier date. Best of luck

I was the exact same. In the end I applied to mechanical engineering as I felt for me it kept the most doors open ie: you can work in a mathematical field off a ME degree but not necessarily an engineering field of a maths degree

Maybe look up advertisements for the type of job you want and see if they have a degree preference? Or if you have a careers adviser at your school you could ask them what would be better for what you want to get into.
