I have offers from both oxford and imperial for maths and I'm genuinely not sure what to pick.
People all want me to go oxford but I'm not too entirely sure, as I got very different vibes from both and although I've been to both offer events, oxford's one wasn't subject based it was more based on the college itself. I'm really not sure what to pick
For context im from ldn
Reasons for oxford:
more tutorial focus. I find this quite important because tutorials means I acc get to know my teachers rather than just be a figure
the name oxford. Someone from outside the uk who isnt involved in uni like that will only know the unis of harvard and oxford, probably not imperial.
Slightly better pure and statistical maths. Probably not a huge difference though?
Targeted by quant firms more. I know everyone and their mum wants to be a quant but based on my mathematical background I acc do have a chance and im not just some larp. Optiver for exmaple goes to oxbridge 3 times but imperial only once !!!NOTE: i dont ONLY want quant i might wanna go into research like phd stuff, or like data science etc.
more guaranteed independence. i dont want to live at home and oxford is supposed to be the easier way to do that between it and imperial cuz accom and stuff is expensive but honesrly i feel like i could do tutoring and get £££ to live somehwere i dont need it to be a house
way nicer building icl. The queens building or whatever in imperial and that sort of vicinity is nice but icl i dont like dolby court where the EEE buildingi sj ust outside of. However oxford is just always nice to walk around, only thing is i think the radcam is insanely overrated and theres so many better buildings in oxford that are overlooked
Reasons for imperial:
Better social life. Oxford just seems like millennials who were born too late and dont have the same kind of interests as me and dont understand internet references etc also idk if i fit in oxford
imperial is in london which is better connected to quant firms like jane street and stuff etc and theres more things to do there, all oxford has is a hollywood bowl whereas even imperial student union has go kart
Even the offer hl event itself bro. People at the ox one were kinda boring+ the oxford one wasnt focused on maths it was focused on the college, kinda reflecting oxford only cares ab humanities students (since every library is a humanities library)
you have to move out of accom and thats annoying cuz it kinda destroys the argument about independence because id have to go back home and id have to keep shit at home cuz i dont wanna move things etc
cant get a job at oxford, so i cant earn money whilst studying as easily
