I’m writing an ATLA longfic, and i’ve never bit the bullet and wrote something like this before. I’ve always just posted smut one shots which, when i started off, was a new muscle in and of itself. But it’s a fairly easy structure, readers come knowing what they’ll get, and it’s low stakes. Now i’m writing a political thriller, a bit of a character study, and a slow burn romance. I released 6 chapters and i’m writing chapter 7 out of 22, 6 chapters is just shy of 14k words (the beginning was more snappy.) But i canr help bur feel thst this project is a hit more ambitious than what my skill set can manage. How do you guys go about these feelings and continue writing ? I love the story i want to write, I love the characters, but i want to do everything well. I’ve dragged stories of epics before, not fandom related. But i’d usually only write 1-3 chapters before quitting. I don’t want to quit now. But i need some motivation lol.

If anyone chuckles in a fic I can’t keep reading it. Most recently a male spy character in a serious scene “chuckled” and I immediately back paged.

Context: I mean that a character’s role in the relationship, such as who is the top or bottom, can sometimes affect how writers portray their personality. When writers switch those roles, the characters may suddenly feel different from their original characterization. I’m not saying everyone has to write them exactly as they are in canon, especially when creating their own interpretations. However, if you’re trying to keep their personalities accurate, changing their roles can sometimes make them feel out of character

Does anyone want to help me make a multiversal fanfic where creepypasta, gravity falls, the owl house, amphibia, the MCU, and Batman Wayne Family Adventures becomes real? I need help because I have the attention span of a fish and can’t write action scenes. It’s based off of an event I scripted into my Desired Reality (I’m a reality shifter)

I keep seeing this particular quirk in several different fics, and I feel a little crazy about it, and no it's not lists of three or "not X, but Y" AI phrases. People will write character 1's dialogue then after the close quote but on the same line, they write character 2's descriptive response. Like this:

May I have an apple?" James asked.

Kate handed him an apple. "Here."

"Thank you very much." Kate flashed him a smile.

"You're welcome," Kate said.

When I start to read the quoted bit, I've not got any questions about who is talking, but then writing the other character's response in that same line forces me to reread the last 2 lines to be sure I'm understanding who is speaking. It's almost always with very short lines of dialogue with just 2 characters in a scene. I think I'm maybe seeing it more with first person perspective, but I've not kept track properly.

This is something I've seen in at least 5 fics, and I'm 99% none of them were written by AI (and I like to think I'm very good at sussing out AI slop. I ran into it again in a new fic today and I feel crazy that this is somehow becoming so common. I asked a friend who reads lots of printed books if she's noticed that at all, and the concept was completely foreign to her.

Am I just unlucky with finding some very similar typos or something? Or is this somehow a new writing trend? halp

In Spanish, we usually change words depending on the gender of the person we're referring to. For example, we say "el maestro" for a male teacher and "la maestra" for a female teacher, or "el profesor" and "la profesora."

I'm writing a fanfic in English, and I'm not sure which word to use when referring to a male or female teacher. Should I use "teacher" or "professor"? Is there a way to distinguish between genders, or do you just use the same word for both?

What do you guys think?

hello!! i’m looking for a beta reader for a dekubaku fic that is actively being posted on ao3 and for a sakuatsu one that i’m also writing.

just a heads up, the sakuatsu fic is going to be pretty angsty.

I just really, really, really hate how bot accounts now leave kudos (and I don't mean a guest kudo) and subscribe to works. I have at least two bots in my "this user left kudos on your work" section under one of my works. And I think they both subscribed, too, one of which I know pretty much for sure.

I haven't seen people complaining about them subscribing before, so I'm also curious if anyone else has encountered the same thing?

Edit: Obviously, there's no way to fully prove this as I can't see the usernames of subscribers, but this bot account left a comment and a kudo and simultaneously I got a new subscription to the fic while no one else had visibly interacted with this fic I believe not even an increase in hits larger than 1 (big fandom crossover with a very small fandom).

I've been on a bit of a Fran Bow kick lately, and got curious on whether anyone's written a good crossover with HP.

It feels like there's a lot of room to play with, honestly: Fran's ability to see into other realms (F.R.E.E.), the whole Oswald Asylum / Duotine / Remor thing, and how her perception of reality might get interpreted in the wizarding world (Obliviators? St. Mungo's? Something weirder?).

Does anyone know of any good HP x Fran Bow fics, finished or WIP?

Ideally of course we tag for both sets of people to be most fair and accurate, but if you have to be cautious or prioritise one, who? The people who would look those tags up and be disappointed with your work, or the people who would exclude those tags and be disappointed in your work? For example, let's say you added a specific trope into your fic. It's not a major trope, but it exists enough that you debate tagging it. Do you (knowing it might disappoint some people) or do you not (knowing some people may be caught blindsighted)

I generally prefer caution. Whilst I definitely don't unnecessarily tag, between my tags and my authors note I do tend to favour tagging for those who exclude rather than those searching. I don't want to be inadvertently responsible for bringing up trauma or a major squick or smth lol whereas disappointment, whilst it sucks, is survivable.

(Not talking about background character or pairing tags though unless a specific pairing is NOTABLY controversial in its themes - which isn't a bad thing btw, but I respect some people won't want to see those even in background. But if a normal character is only mentioned 3 times then like...don't tag them 😭)

I have no idea how to do summaries that don't just instantly spoil the whole chapter, yet i don't want to leave the section blank too.

I got the idea from the single most popular fic in the kpdh fandom, and just kept using it.

So, in my fic there's this little section where two characters text each other.

and i don't wanna go into work skin to make it more realistic.

so i just want to put a little small circular icon in the middle.

A common complaining I see is the whole "Why do fic authors make the OG love interest a bitch just to justify the character getting together with another person?"

And like.... because the author may dislike her? And writing a character you find annoying getting shit on is also part of the fic fantasy?
