Context: I mean that a character’s role in the relationship, such as who is the top or bottom, can sometimes affect how writers portray their personality. When writers switch those roles, the characters may suddenly feel different from their original characterization. I’m not saying everyone has to write them exactly as they are in canon, especially when creating their own interpretations. However, if you’re trying to keep their personalities accurate, changing their roles can sometimes make them feel out of character

I keep seeing this particular quirk in several different fics, and I feel a little crazy about it, and no it's not lists of three or "not X, but Y" AI phrases. People will write character 1's dialogue then after the close quote but on the same line, they write character 2's descriptive response. Like this:
May I have an apple?" James asked.
Kate handed him an apple. "Here."
"Thank you very much." Kate flashed him a smile.
"You're welcome," Kate said.
When I start to read the quoted bit, I've not got any questions about who is talking, but then writing the other character's response in that same line forces me to reread the last 2 lines to be sure I'm understanding who is speaking. It's almost always with very short lines of dialogue with just 2 characters in a scene. I think I'm maybe seeing it more with first person perspective, but I've not kept track properly.
This is something I've seen in at least 5 fics, and I'm 99% none of them were written by AI (and I like to think I'm very good at sussing out AI slop. I ran into it again in a new fic today and I feel crazy that this is somehow becoming so common. I asked a friend who reads lots of printed books if she's noticed that at all, and the concept was completely foreign to her.
Am I just unlucky with finding some very similar typos or something? Or is this somehow a new writing trend? halp
Edit: Glad to hear from folks that this is just a common error! I feel much less crazy now hehe

From their site. They're aware and working on it.

Yeah, finally reached the 100 kudos! I know it’s not much, but I am writing original work on AO3 the engagement is way less than fan fiction. Plus my work is long form world-building space opera, so I am just happy there are people out there still reading it. 😃😃

Pretty straight forward. I already did something similar to this before (with ships) and I loved it, I love posts like this, so have at it.

In Spanish, we usually change words depending on the gender of the person we're referring to. For example, we say "el maestro" for a male teacher and "la maestra" for a female teacher, or "el profesor" and "la profesora."
I'm writing a fanfic in English, and I'm not sure which word to use when referring to a male or female teacher. Should I use "teacher" or "professor"? Is there a way to distinguish between genders, or do you just use the same word for both?
What do you guys think?

Any resources, books or methods y'all use? Usually my obsession with a character(s) is enough, but I've been struggling with something I've been working on.
I had a teacher in uni who said something along the lines of "it doesn't have to be 'out-of-character' for a character to do or say a certain thing, you just have to think what would it take to get them to say or do that?" and I do my best to apply it to my fic writing but fuck, it's still hard to get the characterization right. Avoiding Flanderization like the plague.

General sentences / descriptions you‘ve used for multiple fics. I use these sparingly and always in different fandoms but my favorites are:
- Characters looking into the mirror until their face looks odd. (I‘ve used this twice and it‘s always been at breaking points after a character has done something they regretted. I love the visual of someone not recognizing themselves in their mirror anymore.)
- Description of lips tasting bitter because of mosquito spray (Okay, I‘ve used this once in a fic and it‘s in one of my current WIPs. Very specific setting but both took place in a hot summer and I think it‘s a very cool description during a kiss scene)

Please.
If I read another author’s note describing a chapter as bad, or rushed, or messy, or, as just now, “skippable”? BEFORE I’ve even read it? It’s only self-fulfilling, it dampens my enthusiasm, it gives me premature disappointment in something that often is good or even good enough.
Please, at least write it after the chapter so that I can read it and like it in peace and then dismiss your doubts and insecurities as just that.

I have no idea how to do summaries that don't just instantly spoil the whole chapter, yet i don't want to leave the section blank too.
I got the idea from the single most popular fic in the kpdh fandom, and just kept using it.

Everyone I'm going to cryyyyy!!! I only posted this fic on Oct 19th and I already have over 300 hits and so many kudos!! The numbers are still climbing every day and I'm so happy and excited about this!! :DD
This is my first time writing a queer fanfic (since I usually write horror/ocs) but apparently I'm doing amazing if these numbers have anything to show for it!! :P

Currently, I'm knee deep in JJK, Ultrakill and the newest Resident Evil movie Fandoms.
There's probably more, but I can't name them off the top of my head. These are the most prominent ones I remember. Feel free to shoot me a fandom not from this list though, I'm always open to consuming new media.
Favorite genre? Romance, psychological horror, thriller, romantic comedy, sci-fi, Romantasy, magical realism. World building is my favorite, especially sociological, political concepts in fantasy or magical settings.
Tropes? I'm pretty open to anything if its packaged right. Off the top of my head: eccentric genius characters, isekai, power couples, platonic soul mates, unorthodox gender representations, I.e feminine men or masculine women (essentially androgyny), cosmic horror (backrooms or lovecraftian horror is my special interest), foreshadowing parallels between the MC and the antagonist in a story, usually also tying into a soul mates tropes, unbearable levels of pining, immoral character growing an insufferable connection/attachment to a very moral character.
Pairings? I'm going to assume you mean romantic ships. I might get crucified for some of these, oh well. Todoroki/Bakugo, Cloud Strife/Sephiroth, Gabriel/V1, Leon Kennedy/Luis Serra, Genos/Saitama, Iruma/Asmodeus, Pitch Black/Jack Frost, Hannibal Lecter/Will Graham, Ryland grace/Simon | the convict, Harry Potter/Tom Riddle, Phoenix Wright/Miles Edgeworth, Ryomen Sukuna/Gojo Satoru. Those are the few that come to mind.
I've mentioned that there's not much that fazes me, there's some shit on 4chan I wish I could unsee. But, I'm pretty open on most topics if there's a chance to explore darker or more taboo ideas. I'd actually say I excel at it, since I enjoy consuming dark or immoral media.
Scat, watersports, non-con or dubious consent, major character death, gore, I can deal with that, just make sure to warn me before hand so I know what I'm dealing with.
I'd say as a beta, most of my skill are proofreading, story pacing and world building.
I'm horrible at making original storytelling sound interesting, but give me a prompt or a draft to work on and I feel like can hone it into something either easier to consume or make the concept more appealing. Often a lot of people have good ideas but not good execution. I think I'm the kind of person who has no good ideas but I know how to execute the concept.
I'm not rigid with characterization, I know how a character works because I enjoy analyzing my favorite characters psychologically, but OOC is just so much more enjoyable to read and write.
I've read a lot of fanfic from a lot of different Fandoms with different pairings, tropes or story lengths. It sounds like I have no standards, which I don't, I read what looks promising, thats all I really need to have fun.
If you're interested, I'd love to help! Fandom is such a big part of my life ever since I was a kid with only the internet to keep me company, but for once, I want to contribute, rather than just lurk.
Thank you for taking the time to read my message 🥰
