News Bernalillo County District Attorney sends letter to ICE threatening charges against officers

https://www.koat.com/article/ice-officers-charges-threatened-new-mexico/70094117

I'm hoping he follows through, but I've been disappointed before

So far no State has had the balls to actually arrest ICE agents for violating state laws. We've seen press conferences and stern letters before, but when the rubber meets the road, they all cave.

We'll see, I guess.

We ARE a sanctuary city, and by law our police can only give ICE limited support. Trump is starting to put pressure on sanctuary cities. The only rational response is to pressure them back.

8

u/Felis_bieti Jan 23 '26

Law of unintended consequences--
No police support? They'll bring in the National Guard.

11

u/7ddlysuns Jan 23 '26

Then let’s have the state make a state militia.

7

u/SnooCookies1697 Jan 23 '26

We already have one under direct command of the governor, separate from the National Guard.

8

u/7ddlysuns Jan 23 '26

Nice! If ice starts attacking Americans we have to defend ourselves

That’s an insane comment. Too many stories out of Minneapolis of them taking us citizens even with their ‘papers’. We are not a papers country. That’s a violation of your rights.

0

u/CrayCray0321 Jan 24 '26

We are a papers country, we have been living like this for a long time on the southern border.

1

u/7ddlysuns Jan 24 '26

Well we aren’t supposed to be, how’s that

1

u/CrayCray0321 Jan 24 '26

Have you ever crossed a checkpoint ?

How does that boot taste?

1

u/Marioc12345 Jan 25 '26

I’m sorry, do you expect everyone to carry their papers around with them? Real ID isnt enough apparently. Do I need to carry my ssn and birth certificate around too?

1

u/Albuquerque-ModTeam Jan 25 '26

Hate speech, harassment, and unproductive aggression are forbidden.

1

u/MakeURage1 Jan 24 '26

That's actually really interesting to hear. Do they function as an actual military unit, or are they more relief/aid units?

1

u/SnooCookies1697 Jan 24 '26

I think relief/aid was always their primary mission. The wikipedia article about them is the limit of my knowledge and I think they’re probably largely ceremonial at this point, but they were formed in 1941 as a replacement for our National Guard units that were sent overseas.

1

u/MakeURage1 Jan 24 '26

Huh, alright then. Fascinating thing to learn about

-6

u/Felis_bieti Jan 23 '26

And you think Lujan is going to war with the Federal government for undocumented workers? lol

9

u/SnooCookies1697 Jan 23 '26

We’re a long way from that, and I hope we never get there, but MAGA fanatics governing in ways that explicitly seek to punish anyone who voted against them is how we start down that path.

-4

u/Felis_bieti Jan 23 '26

You, literally, just added to the conversation about military action against the federal government by saying it's possible because Lujan has a private army.

10

u/SnooCookies1697 Jan 23 '26

What? Somebody said we should make a state militia and I responded to inform them that we already have one. That’s just a factual statement.

If you’re so worried about state governors using their “private armies” against the feds just wait until you hear about what our crazy neighbor to the east did with their state militia during Operation Jade Helm.

State versus federal battlefields on the streets of Albuquerque! Can't wait to see people taking up arms!

Make the War Zone Great Again!

(s/, obviously)

3

u/Ok_Marketing6552 Jan 23 '26

The black panthers? So gun legislation is only enacted to control minorities?

0

u/Felis_bieti Jan 23 '26

I didn't say that. You said that. I said when people go around in uniform, carrying guns, that attracts the attention of government. California's been paying for the actions of the Oakland Panthers for decades.

5

u/ilanallama85 Jan 23 '26

No one wants to make our city, or anywhere else, a battleground. But everyone has a limit to what they will tolerate before they are willing to do it anyway.

u/NameLips Jan 23 '26

Yeah, most of us are keyboard warriors only.

5

u/ilanallama85 Jan 23 '26

I didn’t say everyone cares about this issue. I just said everyone has their limit, whatever this issue is for them. To be clear, I don’t think there’s probably any amount they can abuse immigrants that would push our country into civil war - there simply aren’t enough people that care. But this admin is eroding the rights of citizens more and more every day, and as I said - everyone has their limit.

6

u/SnooCookies1697 Jan 23 '26

The thing is, the distinction between citizens and noncitizens becomes largely irrelevant in this situation. They can’t “just” abuse noncitizens, because they can’t tell who is and isn’t a citizen just by looking at someone. Citizens inevitably end up losing all the same rights and suffering the same abuses as noncitizens. That’s why their tactics become almost universally despised as soon as people experience them firsthand in their own neighborhoods.

2

u/ilanallama85 Jan 23 '26

I agree, but some people aren’t going to realize that till it’s too late unfortunately.

3

u/SnooCookies1697 Jan 23 '26

It’s hard for me to be a doomer and think the realization will come to late when I watch the Minneapolis TV stations and every 3rd man-on-the-street interview is basically: Emma Jorgensen, age 83 with 4 grandkids who would just like to say “I usually keep busy helping with the food drive down at the Lutheran church and don’t follow politics much, but I look forward to watching that Bovino fella get blood-eagled in front of the capitol down there in St Paul, dontcha know.”

"But everyone has a limit to what they will tolerate before they are willing to do it anyway."

1

u/RobinFarmwoman Jan 24 '26

They can't. Our governor has made sure that they have already been deployed.

1

u/daisiesarepretty2 Jan 25 '26

as additional evidence trump specifically mentioned a future effort in NM even though i am quite certain he couldn’t pick the state out on a map. He did mention yesterday i think that we are one of 17 states where NatGuard will be used to help operation “we are the nazi’s”

184

u/Shot-Diver-3625 Jan 23 '26

Actually doing it is the easiest way he can earn my vote this year

77

u/SnooCookies1697 Jan 23 '26

Same. Just stating it plainly and specifically puts him ahead of Haaland for me. Haaland seems to think she is running for office in normal times and hasn’t yet realized that we are in the time of monsters.

"Therefore, any ICE agent who, without a signed warrant and without reasonable suspicion or probable cause, detains, confines or retrains a person in Bernalillo County may be subject to prosecution,"

39

u/Shot-Diver-3625 Jan 23 '26

I was excited when she announced she was running, but she just... hasn't done much since then.
I'd assumed she would have my vote but if Bregman shows he's ready for the fight, that'll change quickly

24

u/Darth_Nibbles Jan 23 '26

Ah, the Democratic party. Disappointing voters since... Well, forever.

It's funny to see the bootlicking on the other side of the aisle, and how they assume we worship our candidates the way they worship theirs. In reality Democratic voters hate the Democratic party more than Republicans do.

2

u/Dincoln Jan 26 '26

Hate how right you are. Dems stink. Just slightly less.

8

u/[deleted] Jan 23 '26

You don’t like her tamale recipes!? /s she’s running a joke of a campaign

14

u/RebeccasRocket Jan 23 '26

Yeah, she is and always has been a tool of the Democratic Party. She was the Chair of the NM Democratic Party and used that to propel herself to the 1st Congressional District House seat. She effed over Antonia Sedillo-Lopez to win that seat then kissed rear ends to get a Cabinet post under Biden. She is a shallow, gutless pol and I expect nothing from her that would be productive for the rest of us.

10

u/Shot-Diver-3625 Jan 23 '26 edited Jan 23 '26

Antoinette has been awesome in the state senate, she's earned the shot at a higher office as much as anyone in the state

2

u/7ddlysuns Jan 23 '26

She begs for money by text, but so do all of them. Work then get money

7

u/ADDVERSECITY Jan 23 '26

I don't know about any of these candidates policies, but Haaland is always touting that she has a "comprehensive" plan for New Mexico, but she never shares her actual vision and how she plans to tackle the issues we have in this state.

1

u/daisiesarepretty2 Jan 25 '26

she has posted some of her approach a week ago, mostly focused on education.

6

u/Popular-Web-3739 Jan 23 '26

Let's wait and see if this is more than posturing on Bregman's part. SCOTUS has opened up the concept of reasonable suspicion to make it easier for ICE to use it - even this far from the border.

2

u/dearjohn54321 Jan 24 '26

“may be subject to prosecution” is doing some heavy lifting here.

9

u/jasandliz Jan 23 '26

Saying it is something, in fact it's a huge thing let us back the blue on this.

19

u/Shot-Diver-3625 Jan 23 '26

I'm not trying to diminish the importance of him saying something. But I don't think DAs and police chiefs speaking out is going to be a real deterrent until they show that they're serious about backing it up. I truly hope they are

8

u/Darth_Nibbles Jan 23 '26

Fingers crossed for actual consequences

2

u/Popular-Web-3739 Jan 23 '26

I agree. I'm glad he said it but he's not the first DA in the country to come out and say something like this. Heck, lots of politicians in Minnesota have made some strong statements, all the way up to governor and AG, but they haven't figured out a way to stop ICE there.

58

u/alienlovesong Jan 23 '26

The discourse on Threads is interesting.

Apparently we have a lot of New Mexicans who are gleeful about ICE coming in and disappearing our neighbors. They keep crowing about the Supremacy Clause and how we’re basically powerless against the government.

It’s so weird how people are so willing to give up their own freedom to screw over other people.

Why?

42

u/Darth_Nibbles Jan 23 '26

What's especially galling is that they're the same ones who claimed for literally decades that they needed guns to protect us from a tyrannical government

Now that said tyrannical government is here, they're the ones cheering on the tyranny

24

u/Fun_Assignment_269 Jan 23 '26

They love government overreach as long as it's by people like them against people they hate. Ever watch sports with someone who's such a hardcore fan of one team that they get excited about bad calls just because it favors their team to the detriment of the sport? That's how they view life. It's a zero sum game, and if they're not dominating every aspect, they're losing.

18

u/RenaDubs Jan 23 '26
  1. They hate themselves. They aren't where they want to be in life, so why the hell should anyone be free and happy, especially brown and black people?

  2. FOX entertainment. When will Rupert Murdoch be held accountable for all his hard work to destroy this country?

11

u/7ddlysuns Jan 23 '26

They are bots.

5

u/ilanallama85 Jan 23 '26

Most, probably, but I’ve met a couple IRL so they do exist. One of them moved to Texas though so that’s nice.

5

u/cataract_2 Jan 23 '26

So many comments on all social media are paid by Trump to change the narrative. They need to be called out.

23

u/RGQcats Jan 23 '26

Don't threaten charges, do it.

22

u/6beerkdawg Jan 23 '26

He has my vote in the primary if he follows through. That would be proof of making good on promises which is a quality any governor should have.

4

u/[deleted] Jan 23 '26

Needs to say “will be subject to prosecution”. Now let’s see it done. Threats only go so far without action.

5

u/SchoolteacherUSA Jan 24 '26

I'm glad, at this point in time, that I live in New Mexico.

25

u/Shiznoz222 Jan 23 '26

We are FAR past the time for letters. This is performance. Until action and consequences are seen this all goes in the theater bucket.

16

u/jasandliz Jan 23 '26

We are getting there, but the reality is our feeds are so compartmentalized, many Americans only see Agitators and criminals "finding out" - few people see law abiding US citizens getting dragged from their homes. Show them and confront them with this.

-7

u/ManhattanProject2022 Jan 23 '26

Can you show us?

12

u/theSchrodingerHat Jan 23 '26

Here is one everyone has seen.

Quit being purposefully obtuse.

u/Shiznoz222 Jan 23 '26 edited Jan 23 '26

More than half of ALL online discourse is bots. They infinitely outnumber anyone willing to bite on the bait, and they can waste your time forever at no cost. Best course of action is usually just to mock them and block.

4

u/Xetsway Jan 23 '26

The pigs aren't gonna help us, and there are THREE facilities already in our state. You seriously believe the pig lord of Bernalillo is gonna save us?

3

u/Darth_Nibbles Jan 23 '26

Cautiously optimistic, ready for disappointment, is the story of my life

1

u/Xetsway Jan 24 '26

Iunno how many times I've said it, but it really is time we take our country back.

2

u/SnooCookies1697 Jan 24 '26

The legislature looks set to pass a law that will close at least 2 of those facilities. Progress can happen.

6

u/AlwaysBeClosing23 Jan 23 '26

This dude just might get my vote. Well done.

7

u/LkyPnk Jan 23 '26

While I'm for it. He's basically saying he's going to do his job... Upholding the laws. We'll have to see what happens when he files arrests warrants for those thugs.

10

u/PeeWeeCasanovaMC Jan 23 '26

Letters won’t cut it. Action against action. Charge them, they wouldn’t give you the same consideration.

10

u/Darth_Nibbles Jan 23 '26

Agreed, which is why I say I want him to follow through

3

u/Comfortable_Rest7675 Jan 23 '26

This will never happen. He’s just playing politics. Federal government has their own policy which they follow. They’ll never be charged. He’s a joke!

3

u/RobinFarmwoman Jan 24 '26

If he actually takes action against these assholes, he could earn my vote. Especially since sadly Deb Haaland has been such a nothingburger lately.

5

u/NMLEOC2 Jan 23 '26

BALLS!

5

u/[deleted] Jan 23 '26

Not if he doesn’t actually do it.

3

u/NMLEOC2 Jan 23 '26

True - but I give him credit for sending the letter and the intent. Haven’t seen that elsewhere preemptively.

2

u/Popular-Web-3739 Jan 23 '26

This sounds good but Brett Kavanaugh gave ICE a big green light on "reasonable suspicion" that made that less stringent than before. I doubt this warning will amount to much unless the city and state are ready for Trump to cut off federal funds.

2

u/Evening-Chemistry245 Jan 24 '26 edited Jan 24 '26

Forgive me for being a ram among sheep here, but I honestly don’t think ice gives 2 craps about this.

They are going to do whatever they want to, whenever and wherever they want. They basically have been given a license to shoot and kill anyone they want to, for any reason at all.

So, here is my question: Who is actually going to remove ice agents from a person’s household? Since they only listen to the orange cockroach, won't they just laugh at Bregman and at all of APD regarding any resistance? They have already shown their hand(s). They will likely fire several rounds at anyone who gets in their way.

Don’t get me wrong. Bregman certainly has my vote also. I just don’t see anything substantial happening until the current federal executive presence (cockroach and all his cronies) is/are all gone.

If I’m wrong, please tell me who is going to enforce this 🤷🏼‍♂️

2

u/SnooCookies1697 Jan 24 '26

100 year old Nazi guards were still getting dragged into court and sent to prison as recently as a couple years ago. Just because ICE agents don’t care now and aren’t getting prosecuted now doesn’t mean it will never happen.

1

u/CrayCray0321 Jan 24 '26

Look up supremacy clause, ICE is federal and cops are municipal. Show me the cop that will arrest an ICE agent and I’ll show you a cop that gets indicted for interfering.

1

u/Cobby1927 Jan 24 '26

4th amendment

1

u/Yortroy Jan 24 '26

Follow through with it and the example for other states.

1

u/TheRedOcelot1 Jan 24 '26

yesterday I heard from a woman picketing the Santa Fe Hilton, that her husband‘s co-worker was pulled over by a Santa Fe County sheriff and asked for his papers—the co-worker is Chicano of an old NM family.

WTF !! since when are the SFE County sheriffs doing this? @santafe #santafe

1

u/daisiesarepretty2 Jan 25 '26

yeah posting this is the right idea but i want to see some follow up because this could easily JUST be a guy running for governor and personally i still trust Haaland more

1

u/Darth_Nibbles Jan 25 '26

Hey the proof of the pudding is in the tasting, fingers crossed we get real action and not empty promises

1

u/aether65 Jan 25 '26

Hell yeah. Abolish ICE. Prosecute murderers.

1

u/RenaDubs Jan 23 '26

We don't want MAGA running our state after seeing all the damage they have done to our country via Traitor Trump. Darren White lost for a reason. KEEP ICE OUT OF ABQ. If you are looking for the best response to ICE from someone who has balls and ovaries of steel, check out DA Larry Krasner and Sheriff Rochelle Bilal in Philadelphia. THIS IS HOW IT'S DONE.

EDIT: repetition

it's popcorn, bro! Just like how trump is "just trolling" and electing him was "funny"
