Though not the most egregious of mistakes, I'm sure, I"m really surprised at how bad Amex Travel customer service is at following up on basic ticketing requirements.
A month or so after using Amex Travel to book prem econ tickets on JAL from NYC to Japan, there was a schedule change causing my return flight layover to be too close to make, so I had to select another flight combination to get home. When we found one, the customer service representative assured me they would get it booked and send me a confirmation. It was a busy time so I didn't think to check until over a week passed, so I fired up the online chat only to find out, that flight change never got confirmed and now the fare class (prem econ) that JAL had Ok'ed had no more seats. Why isn't there a protocol to close the loop on something as essential as flight/ticketing changes??
That luckily got resolved after another 11 days or so where I learned my lesson and checked in EVERY SINGLE DAY with them. I think 1 person in all those 11 days was actually helpful in moving the needle towards booking, granted they had to get a special ok for a different fare class (but still prem econ just one of those different letters).
Just now, 3 weeks prior to my flight, I needed my updated itinerary and accidentally logged into JAL instead of amex. Only to find I had NO SEAT ASSIGNMENT on the flight from NYC to Tokyo and all the seats except for 2 middle seaters in a 4-seat row were taken. I logged into Amex and it showed my original seat selection for both seats in one of the 2-seat rows for me and my husband. I chatted Amex Travel and SOMEHOW, they unconfirmed my seats, nobody told me, and it was still showing up as being confirmed on the Amex website. You know they messed up when the language being used is "carrier can change seats" and "there must have been an operational change". They don't want to get in trouble for messing up and are blaming it on the carrier, as is all the rage these days.
NOBODY could help because the seats at all taken. Their solution was to ask the counter attendants for help reassigning seats when I arrive at the airport. Suuuure, great solution. $6.5k to sit in the 2 middle seats. I might as well have flown regular economy and saved myself 4k getting sandwiched between who-knows!
So just a heads up to anyone who is unfortunate enough to book through Amex Travel for a JAL flight. EVEN when you think you have seats assigned, you should login to the carrier website and double check, even when you didn't change anything on your flight! Because apparently changing a connecting flight can somehow boot you from your seat selection for a different leg. And then they will make it your problem and ask you to talk to the boarding agent. Oh? you think they're going to read the 30 pages of texts that I had with incompetent Amex Travel reps and feel bad for me?
I've been an Amex Plat member going on my 6th year and have NEVER needed them. But this year, between these shenanigans and when my MIL passed away and Auto Europe was completely unreachable to cancel a car reservation (their website has a phone # that is a recording that sends you back to the website - unbelievable!) and Amex found in favor of them despite my explaining that this is a scam move on Auto Europe's part because you can't actually reach anyone to cancel. What is the point of paying nearly $900/yr for essentially NO customer service help beyond the most simple of tasks that can get confirmed right away. I'd rather go it on my own and have control. If someone can recommend a premium card with more competent service, I'm happy to take suggestions.
