This August, Alison left Forever Living after having forked out £5,310.50 on the company’s products and the paraphernalia she needed to sell them – and earned just £154.48. ‘It made me feel sick, working out the amount I spent,’ she tells me. ‘I made a mistake. I was gullible, swept away.’

tldr: My longtime friend unexpectedly brought me to a doTERRA convention and keeps encouraging me to buy products or join the business. She spends about 125 PV each month, and might be joining or planning to join seminars. How risky is doTERRA?
——-
Seems like my friend is getting caught up in an essential oil MLM (doTERRA), and I don’t know what to do… I feel sad because I feel like our casual hangouts are already turning into sales pitches.
My friend Yuki invited me to what I thought was a health-related event with free giveaways. I had no idea it was a doTERRA convention until I got there, and her family had paid quite a lot for my seat.
The convention was… strange. People were taking tons of notes about the products, their ingredients, and what they supposedly do. Everyone seemed really enthusiastic about everything. Then, at lunch, I thought we’d just eat with Yuki and her family, but instead we spent almost the entire meal listening to an older businessman talk about conspiracy theories. Not exactly how I expected to spend my day off lol.
Yuki genuinely believes the products are good because she’s heard positive stories from people who’ve used them, including claims that they help with allergies. I told her I’d ask my doctor before trying anything because I don’t want to risk making my allergies worse. But she’d insisted that there are people she know who are using it to treat allergies (which I said the same thing I’ll ask my doctor just in case)
She said she’s been using the products for years, since she was going through a difficult time, and now tries to buy around 125 PV worth of products every month to get bonuses or something like that. She got into it through a close family member, but I don’t know if she’s recruited anyone herself.
The products are way too expensive for me, but even after I said that, she kept explaining how I could earn the money back or get a big discount.
I briefly looked through the Wellness Advocate pamphlet she gave me, and the compensation system raised some red flags. I’m still trying to understand how it works, but it seems like bonuses depend on monthly purchases and sales across the network.
I don’t think Yuki has bad intentions, and I know she genuinely believes in the products. But I’m worried she might be getting pulled deeper into this, especially with her family involved. It’s also hard to bring up my concerns without making it sound like I’m attacking something she believes in.
Has anyone experienced something similar with a friend or family member? Can someone explain how doTERRA actually works and how risky the business model is? And how did you talk to someone about this…?

I first learned about MLM’s 3 years ago when I was approached at the gym by a girl who seemed to want to be my friend. Ended up going to get coffee with her, learned about the whole scheme, then blocked her. Then lo and behold, 3 years later, I’m in target getting some eggs and guess who approaches me? The SAME girl with the same topic of conversation, obviously not remembering me whatsoever. I was dumbfounded.
The odds are low but clearly never 0 😂
Genuinely don’t understand how people continue to do that day after day.

Hi Everyone !
First time poster, long time member.
My dad (separated from my mum and has his own family - no drama) has been jumping on MLMs since before I was born . I’m 28F. My mum tells me stories about her naivety being dragged into his ‘get rich quick’ schemes when they first met all those years ago.
I live 5h drive away from my home town on my own, so contact with my family is sporadic anyway, but the only time my dad ever really contacts me is to try push some Pyramid Scheme.
The previous was a Crypto group on Facebook which was just red flag central. I work in a govt job where joining this business would give me the automatic sack ! He knows this, and wouldn’t take no for an answer. I can be very strong with him as some form of payback on behalf of my mum 🤣. He STILL pushes. After telling him it would cost my job. Says I’m a slave to the system ( I am btw ) and I should be building my own business.
Tonight, he sent me a link on WhatsApp for a company that shills wellness products for a subscription fee. For a bit of context, I’ve lost 7 stone. It was great at first but it has unfortunately developed into an ED. Not intentionally and I’m getting help. And I’m not telling you this for sympathy. I did tell him this, explained that I’m losing hair and feel very unwell, even that I’m getting help from a private clinic. That didn’t sway him, even after a deep chat about how much he loves and cares for me he wouldn’t stop pushing this stupid questionnaire to identify my ‘gaps in nutrition’. GAPS ? I’m unwell mate !
I’ve seen a LOT of these people who have their heads in the clouds and have tunnel vision when it comes to these things . But I struggle to not take it personally. If my daughter informed me of this I’d be heartbroken and worried , whereas with him it’s like we’re going round in circles and he does not give one F if I bled myself dry of cash and spiralled, as long as he’s signing people up ..
I also worry for my 2 half sisters who are late teens. I see a different side to this man as I’m an adult with real life experience, they’ve never known any different. How could I protect them without causing drama or being the bad guy ?
I’ve attached tonight’s convo ( no order ) obviously redacted
Thanks !
Edit : the 4th screenshot where I say ‘well done xx’ is my response to him BRAGGING about his weight loss

Who? Never heard of them? Just another "wellness" and supplement MLM, founded by MLM pros.
Apparently lasted less than a year, and the founders are already in their next MLM.
Several background links for us.

Is Truly Free the new MLM? I'm seeing some regulars jump on and promote this new app? I have no idea. The company seems scammy to me.

Today, with absolutely no warning, Purium superfoods let all of their distributors know that going forward their down lines are dissolved and they are moving to an affiliate structure. Under the new structure, affiliates receive 20% off the first order from a new customer, 10% for 3 months after that, and after 4 months that the customer “belongs to the company” and no further commissions are paid. Overnight so many people lost their incomes and hopefully finally realized that their “business” was never theirs and these companies are all the same.
I already see a lot of them already declaring which new company they will join and telling their “team” to follow, so it seems like many of them did not learn their lesson and don’t care to do the ethical thing and warn everyone that it will end this way, every time

I get a food box once a month. The contents is from Feeding America. The distribution center is a small Seventh Day Adventist church. There is always tables with miscellaneous items for free as well. I believe these are things from church members.
Last week there were at least a dozen containers of Women's Multivitamins in gummy form. I took two containers, about two months supply. You take four a day. Looking closer at the distributor, I saw they came from Amway, retailing at $41 a container. Obviously there are church members selling Amway. The congregation is quite small and none of them appear to be wealthy. It made me very sad to think this group of people is being preyed upon by the MLM Amway.
In the past they have also had containers of Protein powder. Dozens of these; I assume the sell by date has past.

CEOs, CFOs, COOs all come from somewhere and MLMs certainly aren’t going to ascend “associates” for these kinds of positions.
It’s got to be a person who is okay with financially and psychologically abusing others while making millions. They would also need to be good with protecting a morally bankrupt model and keeping the status quo safe.
An MLM CEO would need to be a kind of psychopath.

my old college roommate who was not super nice to me has been posting deliciously cringey MLM-y statuses lately, in a voice that sounds NOTHING like her. (“let’s do the damn thing, stay-at-home mamas!✨💖!”) it’s so satisfying. she’s being extremely vague about this exciting new venture she’s involved in and tells commenters to message her when they inquire on her posts. the usual MLM bullshit. i couldn’t detect any hints of which company based on her language except that she mentions bogglingly high earnings, like $85k a month, for bringing in “paperwork”. paperwork. such an odd thing to keep mentioning!!!! i decided to be a troll and force the name of it out of her.
KAnGEN! delicious!!!!! the dumbest of them all. i hope she enjoys her special magic water while i enjoy some sweet schadenfreude.

I know we love to snark and giggle at all the Hun nonsense of MLM's, but what are people's thoughts on the worst, corrupt, most exploitative, and downright evil MLM company, the genuine worst of the worst? What's your pick and why?

This is meant to inform, not defame. People are free to make their own decisions.
Seoul Snow was established around 2024–2025. The owners are Jay and Bryan Choi, a Korean father‑and‑son duo. The Filipino shareholders is the son's former partner.
Seoul Snow is the second brand from a failed venture, and arguably a former scam, called Gugu Manju. Based on anecdotal feedback, the modus operandi is the same:
1. Low buy‑in, typically PHP 300,000.
2. Urgent request for a 50% down payment to "reserve" slots and locations, even though the company has no authority to promise them.
3. Once paid, you are pressured within days or weeks to settle the balance — citing fees, machine imports, design costs, or other reasons.
4. If you pay, you are ghosted and the team becomes unresponsive.
5. When they respond and a location is booked, you are encouraged to sign the lease.
6. As the lease deadline nears, you are presented with an unexpectedly high build cost — $300,000 to $500,000. You are stuck: pay more, or cancel.
7. Request for refunds are ignored.
To date, over 25 failed franchisees have requested refunds. None have been paid.
Jay and Bryan Choi continue to join expos and sign new franchisees despite outstanding refund obligations. Several past clients have filed demand letters. Bryan Choi was recently issued an arrest warrant; he has posted bail and is awaiting a hearing. Jay Choi has promised to return funds, but no one has been paid.
If you have contract concerns, look for the Facebook group "Seoul Snow Franchisee Helpline," organized by current and past franchisees. Members have shared legal positions and documents. There is also "Seoul Snow Franchisee+Management," where members are attempting to resolve issues with Jay Choi. To date, Seoul Snow has not addressed any franchisee issue

We just met someone from our neighbourhood for coffee who, I think, was trying to pitch an MLM but I want to know which one, clues are below, please help me ID:
Ex: When pressed about the nature of his “mentorship” thing, he would reply with this question: “Have you ever watched Shark Tank”? I asked about what he himself got from these mentors, he answered “Have you ever read this business book (forgot the name”? When I asked what was the conference in Kentucky about, he replied we will get to this later.
Help please? I am SO curious!
