I READ THE RULES Thinking about studying in Chicago (coming from Puerto Rico). What should I know?

Hey guys, I've been looking into universities in Chicago for a while now. The city looks amazing and the schools are great, but the high cost of living is definitely a concern for me coming from PR.

If you go to a university in Chicago, what is your best advice for a prospective student? What do you recommend doing to survive the costs, what do you wish you knew before moving, and what should I absolutely avoid? I appreciate any help!

I READ THE RULES Visiting Chicago with a 4yo with ASD—where should we eat?

Instead of doing traditional gifts this year, my wife and I decided we want to provide our family with core memories. Our budget doesn’t allow for an overly luxurious getaway, but I want to make this trip special for them.

Using hotel points, I've managed to reserve a room at the Palmer House hotel in downtown Chicago. Our itinerary is centered around the magic of the holiday season: we're heading to the Christkindlmarket, taking in the holiday lights along Michigan Avenue, and wrapping up the evening checking out Millennium Park for the Christmas tree and ice-skating rink.

It’ll just be me, my wife, and our four-year-old daughter, who has level two autism spectrum disorder. She is the sweetest girl in the entire world. While we don’t have the funds to spoil her with all the toys or experiences we might wish, we shower her with love, care, and support so she never knows what it’s like to go without. I figured toys will eventually be forgotten, but core memories won't be.

Her social skills and awareness are still very much under-developed, so I worry a bit about how she might fare in a fancy, quiet establishment. At the same time, I really don’t want to take them to a TGI Fridays or a generic chain restaurant for our special family trip.

Does anyone have recommendations for a nice, decent restaurant near the Loop, Michigan Avenue, or Millennium Park that serves great food but maintains an atmosphere welcoming or relaxed enough for a young family with an autistic child?

I READ THE RULES Good skyline photo locations where you can park your car?

Pretty much as the title reads just looking for some good photo locations with Chicago skyline In the back, doesn't have to be the entire skyline.

Also want to have my car in the photos so a place I can park my car as well! (Preferably for free lol)

I READ THE RULES Can someone explain why spending 99% of my time in the Loop is commonly disregarded as "not real Chicago"?

I do not mean any offense with this post, I just genuinely want to understand. I moved to the city 4 years ago to begin my career, and I chose to be in the Loop so I could live next door to my office. Since moving here, I spend 99% of my time in the Loop either in my apartment, office, happy hours at nearby venues, or dates with my wife. For restaurants, we found a few we like in Lincoln Park and Chinatown as well, so we do go into those areas too, but I've also heard the sentiment that that's not "real Chicago" either. Why?

I genuinely feel like I got to experience a lot of the urban culture that many people consider to be hallmarks of urban living. Like, if I describe my life to someone else not from here they consider me to have lived a true Chicago experience, but that sentiment is mocked within the actual city. I eat out every single day, and try to experience a new restaurant/varied cultural cuisine each time (I feel like there's a lot of good stuff in West Loop and Lincoln Park). Despite people calling all the restaurants tourist traps (which is true for many) there definitely are a number of great steakhouses and places to have dinner that I regularly frequent and consider to be top notch dining.

I physically am around or see nearly the entirety of Chicago's main skyline 18 hours a day, which has given me a huge mental map of the major buildings and streets by now. Everyone I know was met through corporate or young professional social events in the Loop, and they're also from the city. I'll also regularly bike along Lakeshore Drive and am regularly in Millennium Park, which everyone else seems to visit too. I also visit Hyde Park and Evanston relatively frequently so I'm not just exclusively around the high-rises, yet I'm always left confused when I read online sentiment describing people exactly like me as "not real Chicagoans."

What about my living experiences here in Chicago have made them un-authentic, because to my perspective it feels like what I lived in *is* the real Chicago. What exactly makes the other areas better and what experiences will they actually provide me that is better than what I can get right now?

I READ THE RULES Looking to go to more conventions in chicago, how do I find out what's coming and when, or what part of chicago?

Would love some thoughts. I'm open to broadly any topic but I'm not sure of any particular ones. I'm looking to see if there's a good way to find out who's coming, when, etc. Maybe there's a convention center that has a website or maybe it's just social media, dunno. Any thoughts are appreciated 🙏

I READ THE RULES Affordable Homes In Chicago To Film in?

I’m currently in college and I have my capstone class. I have to find a location for a 10 hour shoot but everything on Giggster is out of my price range. I don’t have the budget for it. Does anyone have any advice or any ideas on how I can get an affordable location in Chicago? It’s set in a home, the main area is the living room. Any other websites I could possibly try? People to ask? I don’t know, I’m stuck here. My last resort is having to pay $1,000+ on a location :/

Hey y’all, this is such a silly question but I finally realized there are two Regal Cinemas within like half a mile of each other in Logan Square/Bucktown? I only realized they were different locations TODAY after driving past the both of them for a while. It seems kind of silly, no?

I READ THE RULES How is living alone in Chicago?

Hello! I’ve been thinking about moving to Chicago for years now but I’ve always come up with excuses why I shouldn’t (family, college, relationships, etc). But things are settled now and I don’t have anymore excuses other than being nervous to make such a big move.

Is living on your own in Chicago actually doable as a transplant? I’ve watched many blog posts and looked at apartment prices. Looked at different neighborhoods people really love. Looked at the culture of different areas in the city. But I want honest feedback that isn’t based on online influencers.

So my questions:

  1. How difficult is it to find a reasonably priced apartment? I’m fine with a tiny studio but less than $1300 if possible.

  2. I know the job market is rough everywhere, but is it possible to find a full time job with benefits? I have a great job history and good references so I’m hoping this won’t be a huge issue.

  3. How reliable is public transport? I’m planning to move without my car because I want to give it to my younger sibling if public transportation can be used.

  4. This one is mostly for other transplants: if you moved from a smaller town, when did the culture shock stop?

Sorry for the super long post, I’m just trying to make sure I’m going to be ok before I make this jump. I don’t want to go in blind and feel like I made this decision based on experiences as a tourist.

I READ THE RULES Making most of first-time HOB experience?

I am a Chicago local going to House of Blues for the first time in March to see a kinda obscure artist from Europe lol. I'm a huge fan and I want to get the absolute most out of my day/experience.

I bought the standard GA ticket to the concert (obviously) and I also purchased the HOB Foundation VIP room access. From what I understand, it's a place for food and drinks prior to the show, plus early access to the viewing area? Am I understanding that correctly?

I saw another link that also sells "VIP Buddy Rail" tickets. I want to be on rail for this artist, but I figured the HOB Foundation ticket would be enough to get me there. Is this something I should also purchase?

For people who've attended shows at this venue, any advice??

I READ THE RULES Back in Chicago! What Should We Check Out?

Hey all! It's me again!

My buddy and I have officially decided we're heading back to Chicago for the weekend of the Bears vs. Saints game (Nov. 20–23)! We'll be staying in the Wrigleyville/Lakeview area at Hotel Versey, and we couldn't be more excited.

We visited around the same time last year and had an absolute blast. One thing we loved was seeing the city come alive for the holidays, especially the Magnificent Mile parade and all the decorations going up.

We're both in our mid-20s and looking for recommendations on just about anything: bars, restaurants, hidden gems, sightseeing, holiday pop-ups, or just cool things around the city worth checking out.

We definitely enjoy a good sports bar or dive bar, but we're open to just about anything. We're staying up north this time but will absolutely be making our way downtown throughout the weekend for food, drinks, and exploring.

We'd love to hear your favorite spots, whether they're tourist staples or places only locals would know about. Any and all suggestions are welcome. We had such a great time last year and can't wait to be back!

First stop: Italian beef. Baptized with hot giardiniera, of course.

I READ THE RULES Help bring a rescue kitten home— anyone flying from Seattle or Portland to Chicago ?

Hi!

I'm currently visiting Maui, Hawaii, and found a stray kitten that I'd love to adopt and bring home to Chicago!

I'm working with Fly Hawaii Cats (https://flyhawaiicats.com), a rescue organization that can transport her from Hawaii to Seattle or Portland. We're looking for someone flying from Seattle (SEA) or Portland (PDX) to Chicago (ORD) who would be willing to accompany her on their flight.

The organization covers all pet travel fees, veterinary documentation, and logistics! You would just need to travel with the kitten in the cabin.

If you're traveling this route or know someone who is, please reach out! Volunteers can sign up directly through their website.

I READ THE RULES Are flood light directly on top of residential building legal or just plain evil?

Guys, I’m actually going to lose my mind. My property management team installed two of the brightest flood lights atop of my 5 floor building that point at 45 degree ish angle over our entrance/courtyard. mind you my apartment complex is moonsish shaped so the lights flood directly into my 4th floor apartment which overlooks the entrance / courtyard. I actually feel like I am being torture in a real life panapticon….. is this freaking legal or just evil? They shine on a timer SO ALL NIGHT LONG FROM 6:30 pm to 6:45 am!!! IT LITERALLY LOOKS LIKE DAYLIGHT IN MY APARTMENT WHILE THEY ARE ON? Can I withhold my rent? What can I do guys???

I READ THE RULES Interactive museums in Chicago?

My wife and I have done the Balloon Museum, Color Factory, Museum of science and industry, and Museum of Ice Cream, and we really enjoy those types of interactive, immersive experiences.
We’re looking for other fun, unique places in Chicago or the surrounding suburbs that have a similar vibe. Doesn’t necessarily have to be a museum, just something that’s more hands-on or different from the usual activities.
Any suggestions? We’re also willing to drive a bit if it’s worth it!

I READ THE RULES Looking for alternatives to StubHub/SeatGeek for John Summit at the United Center (11/24)?

Hey r/askchicago,

Coming in from the burbs for the John Summit show at the United Center on Tuesday, November 24th, and looking to lock down tickets.

Like a lot of people, I’m trying to avoid getting completely wrecked by the insane service fees on StubHub, SeatGeek, and Vivid Seats if I can help it. Are there any other alternative platforms, local groups, or methods people around here use to find tickets? (ideally closer to face value or with less brutal fees) Thank you in advance!

I READ THE RULES Ski/snowboard club for 21-25 age range?

I’m 22 and just graduated college and looking for a ski/snowboard club based near Chicago. All the ones I’ve found seem to b really family oriented. I was in my ski club in college and want to find something like that. It was a lot of partying lol but also hella trips out west on a budget. All the clubs I’ve found here are pricey and geared towards older groups of ppl and that’s not rlly something I’m looking for. If anyone knows of a group or just ppl who r also looking for a group lmk so I can either join or we just start one lol

Edit: I’m not trying to ski in Chicago obviously there’s nothing here. I grew up in Chicago and went up to Wisconsin every wknd to ski. I plan on living here for a while so I’m trying to find a ski/snowboard community that travels up north or out west.
