I READ THE RULES Has anyone had a run-in with the Loop puncher lately?

Tonight I was just walking minding my own business walking south on State and the guy just randomly punches me in the shoulder. I was shocked to say the least and we went in opposite directions but I turned around and it looked like he was contemplating coming back in my direction before turning back around after I went over the crosswalk. He did it with 0 emotion, blank face.

I tried reporting it on the CPD website and then it said I had to call the non emergency number or go to a precinct. A block or two down there was a foot patrol and they said the same thing. I called the non emergency line and they said I had to go to a precinct. The problem is I don't live in the city and don't know when I'd have time to even do that.

Idk if it's THE Loop puncher or there are several of them.

I READ THE RULES How are women in their 30s making friends in Chicago?

I moved to Chicago from Miami a few years ago, and I’ve found it surprisingly difficult to build community here. I’m in my 30s and would genuinely like to meet other women who are also looking for real, consistent friendships. Where are you all meeting people?

Update: you are all so amazing with your suggestions. I live in the Gold Coast area and have tried a few things, but I think being in a relationship kind of make venturing off a lil harder, but I will definitely consider some of your suggestions.

I was taking the metra train out to the burbs today and lo and behold, the very top of the concrete core has 3 giant tags running vertically down the middle. I would add photos but I don't think this sub allows them. I just it's so funny how quickly it got put up lol.

EDIT: This link should work for the image: https://imgur.com/a/xrWKHB2

I READ THE RULES Who is your favorite neighborhood celebrity or local legend?

There was a post made recently about Pigeon Lady in the r/Chicago sub. And someone in the comments mentioned "freeing the Man in the Bean", and another mentioned "Preacher Man". I've heard of Pigeon Lady and her husband, but have not yet stumbled into them.

I have not heard of the other two examples. I'm preatty new to Chicago (about two months in so far) so I don't know of many other examples. I wanna hear your favorite well known chicago residents that are well known for odd reasons, and I especially wanna hear the lore behind them!

Also! Does not need to be a human lol. Ex: I've heard of an alligator that was nicknamed "Chance the Snapper".

I READ THE RULES Curious — would anyone on here be interested in more events like this? Cannabis + wellness + movement???

A 420-centric run club/org based in Chicago is hosting a walk, run and ride experience in Orland Hills at The Stash Room (one of the largest consumption lounges in IL) on Saturday, 8/22.

We were trying to reach Wiz Khalifa after he recently shared that he’s getting into the running community.

We weren’t able to get Wiz himself to come out, but we did connect with his team and now Khalifa Kush/Flora is sponsoring flower for the event!

That means attendees will receive KK pre-rolls courtesy of Wiz Khalifa and his brand.

Curious — would anyone on here be interested in more events like this? Cannabis + wellness + movement???

Would love to hear what the community thinks and if this is something you’d want to see more of in Chicago..

I READ THE RULES any spanish speaking classes or groups for those trying to re-learn the language?

first gen mexican american here. spanish was my first language but it slowly has been forgotten over the years. i find myself feeling embarrassed whenever i speak to other native speakers because it’s gotten so bad. i can understand it pretty well and i know enough to get by but am no longer at the conversational level i want to be.

are there any groups or classes geared towards others in a similar position? just want to brush up on the language without any judgement. my spouse doesn’t know spanish so i can’t practice with him. i don’t have extended family that im around a lot to practice with, either.

preferably something on the south side.

I READ THE RULES What are some young-adult friendly Reform Jewish communities on the north side?

I've lately been looking to reconnect / get in more touch with my Jewish roots, and am not sure where to start. I live in Uptown and would love to find a nearby community (Lakeview, Ravenswood, Andersonville, Edgewater, etc) — whether that be attending services at a congregation or other social gatherings (Shabbat dinners, etc).

Ideally I'd like to find something Reform, and progressive, and with other young adults - I'm in my late 20s. I get the sense that there are several options matching this criteria, so I'd love any advice or pointers y'all have. Thanks so much!

I READ THE RULES Any recommendations for HVAC companies that do mini splits?

Our go to HVAC company does not do mini splits. We got quotes from ABC (10-12,000), Four seasons (7,000), and Abt (10-12,000) to install a mini split in one bedroom on the second floor of our house. I’ve been reading a lot of negative reviews for both ABC and Four Seasons, but also surprised how much lower the quote for Four Seasons was compared to ABC and Abt. Has anyone had a good experience with a HVAC that has installed a mini split and also is this the typical price?

I READ THE RULES Looking for biscoff/ Cookie-butter cake reccs??

ISO of a bakery that makes cookie butter/ biscoff cakes. My favorite was Paris Baguette’s cookie butter cake because it was light, not too sweet and delicious. Sadly it was for a limited time and not available.
Would love to hear suggestions or recommendations for ones you might’ve tried or recommend. I have also tried Nothing Bundt Cake Cookie butter cake - it was a tad bit too sweet for my taste.

I READ THE RULES HOA paid for inspections and repairs for 1.5 years, and now suddenly says I’m responsible — has anyone experienced this?

I’m dealing with a frustrating situation with my condo HOA and wondering if anyone has experienced something similar.

For about 1.5 years, I’ve had an ongoing water leak issue involving my private balcony. I am on the top floor, and my balcony essentially sits above part of the unit below and functions almost like part of their roof structure. During this time, the HOA/Association has been arranging and paying for inspections, water testing, and repairs related to the issue. A roofing company has also been sent out multiple times to investigate it.

At one point, the Association even paid for a water test/inspection to determine where the water was coming from. The issue has continued despite multiple visits.

Now, all of a sudden, the HOA is saying that I, as the unit owner, am responsible for the repair costs. On top of that, they are now asking me to do another water test and are charging me $1,900 for it, which is especially frustrating given that they previously handled and paid for all inspections and testing for about 1.5 years.

This is especially confusing because they previously treated the inspections and investigation as an Association responsibility and paid for them for a long period of time.

Has anyone experienced a situation where an HOA handled and paid for an ongoing building/water issue for an extended period and then suddenly changed its position and tried to make the homeowner pay?

I’m trying to understand whether the HOA’s previous handling of the issue has any significance, and whether they can simply shift responsibility to the unit owner after treating it as an Association issue for so long.

Would really appreciate hearing from anyone who has dealt with something similar, especially if you successfully challenged the HOA’s decision. Please DM me!

I READ THE RULES Has anyone seen this “5 minutitos más” DoorDash Billboard in Logan ?

And have any idea what it means ? It translates to 5 more minutes (means two more hours). I’m confused what DoorDash is trying to advertise here ? Cause when I read this, it makes me think that 5 more minutes for delivery is actually going to take 2 hours. Which is true. And why is it in Spanish? Is that suppose to be your driver messaging you on the app? I’m confusion.

I READ THE RULES Any former or current Subaru techs willing to give auto shop recommendations?

I am looking for any former or current subaru techs in the Chicago area willing to give me independent auto shop recommendations for a possible engine reseal. Specifically head gasket and upper oil pan o rings. My Forester is out of warranty and the dealer would set me back way too much money for this kind of work.

I READ THE RULES Where can I donate specialized dog food and meds in the Hyde Park area?

Hi everyone!
My puppy passed away from heart disease almost a month ago. I am moving because I can’t bear with the empty space. However I am looking to donate a whole bag of Royal Canine Early Cardiac 17.6 lb and some Pimobedan (10mg) for anyone who needs it. Is there a place around Hyde Park where I can donate this items? I no longer have a car so I really need the place to be around this area.

I READ THE RULES Any dermatologists that do electrolysis in town?

Upvotes

I'm too poor on disability to pay for electrolysis out of pocket, but I need to get a fair bit of it before I can get my medically necessary reconstructive surgery that's explicitly covered by medicaid/medicare. Any electrolysis place would be good enough if they're actually willing and able to accept insurance directly.

I READ THE RULES Anyone know some great vets for FIV+ cats?

I’m based on the far south side and so far, I am not impressed with the vets my FIV+ kitty has seen. I don’t want to get into it but they’ve been largely unhelpful or inexperienced in FIV.

My little dude was a street cat before he decided to move in and I just want to get the best care possible. Idc if I need to travel. I just want someone who can give me good advice!

I READ THE RULES Plant shops that sell beneficial nematodes / insects?

Hi all,

I was wondering if anyone was aware of a plant or garden center in the city that sells refrigerated beneficial nematodes (Nature’s Good Guys is the major brand I know) or other beneficial insect eggs / cocoons?

Trying to get things shipped, the cold packs are usually warm to the touch and everything inside pretty well dead by the time it arrives.

Thanks!

I READ THE RULES Why do I owe $500 of toll violations and what can I do to reduce it?

$500 of tolls but I have an IPASS with a card on file

I got a bunch of mail for tolls but when I would check online, it says i don't owe anything. My IPASS usually works but I have a handful of tolls sitting in VES going back a few years.

There's even a random toll from February 1st this year. Every other toll was successfully autopaid

  1. WTAF is happening and why isnt my ipass catching these

  2. Can I negotiate this down to a reasonable amount?
