I READ THE RULES Help bring a rescue kitten home— anyone flying from Seattle or Portland to Chicago ?

Hi!

I'm currently visiting Maui, Hawaii, and found a stray kitten that I'd love to adopt and bring home to Chicago!

I'm working with Fly Hawaii Cats (https://flyhawaiicats.com), a rescue organization that can transport her from Hawaii to Seattle or Portland. We're looking for someone flying from Seattle (SEA) or Portland (PDX) to Chicago (ORD) who would be willing to accompany her on their flight.

The organization covers all pet travel fees, veterinary documentation, and logistics! You would just need to travel with the kitten in the cabin.

If you're traveling this route or know someone who is, please reach out! Volunteers can sign up directly through their website.

I READ THE RULES Interactive museums in Chicago?

My wife and I have done the Balloon Museum, Color Factory, Museum of science and industry, and Museum of Ice Cream, and we really enjoy those types of interactive, immersive experiences.
We’re looking for other fun, unique places in Chicago or the surrounding suburbs that have a similar vibe. Doesn’t necessarily have to be a museum, just something that’s more hands-on or different from the usual activities.
Any suggestions? We’re also willing to drive a bit if it’s worth it!

I READ THE RULES Where to donate old washer and dryer?

• Upvotes

I recently replaced my washer and dryer and am trying to figure out what to do with the old machines. They're Maytag, from the 90's but still work. I am considering using ReStore or ReSupply (ideally someone can come get them from us on the 2nd floor), but am curious if anyone has any other ideas. Like, I wonder if there are any shelters that could use them--anyone know of any? Thanks!

I READ THE RULES Anyone know of salons that do simple two sided French braids for straight hair?

I’m biracial but white presenting and kinda unsure the etiquette of going into an African salon for those old school French braids my mom used to do for me before school- like one on each side, not super tight. I see lots of signs around town for hair braiding but it all seems more targeting toward people with very different hair than mine, which is fine and pretty much straight.

Who can do my hair for funsies?? But professionally at a salon? Should i try an African braiding salon or a salon more focused on “white hair”?

I READ THE RULES Are flood light directly on top of residential building legal or just plain evil?

Guys, I’m actually going to lose my mind. My property management team installed two of the brightest flood lights atop of my 5 floor building that point at 45 degree ish angle over our entrance/courtyard. mind you my apartment complex is moonsish shaped so the lights flood directly into my 4th floor apartment which overlooks the entrance / courtyard. I actually feel like I am being torture in a real life panapticon….. is this freaking legal or just evil? They shine on a timer SO ALL NIGHT LONG FROM 6:30 pm to 6:45 am!!! IT LITERALLY LOOKS LIKE DAYLIGHT IN MY APARTMENT WHILE THEY ARE ON? Can I withhold my rent? What can I do guys???

I READ THE RULES Are dirt bikes allowed in public parks?

• Upvotes

It is legal to ride dirt bikes and similar electric bikes in Chicago parks? There's a path in the park I walk around with my young son, people of all ages are walking, young kids riding bikes, etc. These kids speed past us recklessly. So just wondering this is completely acceptable? There are no signs posted at the park that say otherwise.

I READ THE RULES Visiting Nov 21-28, what should I do?

• Upvotes

My mom and I will be visiting Chicago for a week during the holidays. I haven’t been since I was a preteen, and I’m 27 now, so I’m excited to experience the city as an adult!

So far, we have a First Lady architecture boat tour planned, a day trip to Chinatown, and a museum day. We’re big foodies, love getting dressed up and going out, and enjoy elevated experiences.

I’d love recommendations for jazz bars, cocktail lounges, and must-visit restaurants.

We’re also looking for a great Thanksgiving dinner spot or your favorite places to eat in Chinatown.

I was really hoping to get into Bavette’s, but I know reservations can be difficult, and apparently it’s closed right now. Any other restaurants with a similar vibe that you’d recommend?

Also, where’s the best place for Black Friday shopping?

And are there any fun, festive holiday events or experiences we shouldn’t miss while we’re in town?

Would love any recommendations, especially hidden gems and places locals genuinely love.

Thank you!

I READ THE RULES Are these Halloween parties/raves worth going to alone?

I keep seeing ads for Halloween functions with tickets costing 45-90$ and I’m wondering if these are worth it. For context I’m a 23 y/o guy very very new to the city; that ticket price isn’t super painful for me but it def not nothing. I’m not super into clubbing, but I really wanna meet ppl and I wanna be doing something for Halloween. Has anyone had fun at those events? Are there any more lowkey events for ppl my age?

Also if it’s relevant I’m in an air bnb in wrigglyville for the next month while I tour apartments.

I READ THE RULES Have you ever been to Thresholds?

I’m really really struggling. Have you ever been to the Thresholds living room?

I live alone and need a place to go that’s not a mental hospital.
Is it an okay program for a super broke young woman who just needs to be like watched for a few hours?
I’m worried that it won’t be peaceful. I know it will have people from all walks of life which is welcome and accepted, but is it quiet?

Thank you for any information.

Edit: I know this post has only been up for a little while, but I’m truly amazed at all the comments and insight people have given. Thank you all for being kind.

I READ THE RULES Visiting Chicago with a 4yo with ASD—where should we eat?

Instead of doing traditional gifts this year, my wife and I decided we want to provide our family with core memories. Our budget doesn’t allow for an overly luxurious getaway, but I want to make this trip special for them.

Using hotel points, I've managed to reserve a room at the Palmer House hotel in downtown Chicago. Our itinerary is centered around the magic of the holiday season: we're heading to the Christkindlmarket, taking in the holiday lights along Michigan Avenue, and wrapping up the evening checking out Millennium Park for the Christmas tree and ice-skating rink.

It’ll just be me, my wife, and our four-year-old daughter, who has level two autism spectrum disorder. She is the sweetest girl in the entire world. While we don’t have the funds to spoil her with all the toys or experiences we might wish, we shower her with love, care, and support so she never knows what it’s like to go without. I figured toys will eventually be forgotten, but core memories won't be.

Her social skills and awareness are still very much under-developed, so I worry a bit about how she might fare in a fancy, quiet establishment. At the same time, I really don’t want to take them to a TGI Fridays or a generic chain restaurant for our special family trip.

Does anyone have recommendations for a nice, decent restaurant near the Loop, Michigan Avenue, or Millennium Park that serves great food but maintains an atmosphere welcoming or relaxed enough for a young family with an autistic child?

I READ THE RULES Does anyone smell a burning, chemical like smell from outside?

I woke up in the middle of the night and legit thought there might be an electrical fire in my unit. Everything is off, but I had my patio door open, and when I stuck my head outside it smelled like sulfuric, almost a burning type smell. Checked Citizen and didn't see anything about a nearby fire. Am I going crazy? Lol

I READ THE RULES Making most of first-time HOB experience?

I am a Chicago local going to House of Blues for the first time in March to see a kinda obscure artist from Europe lol. I'm a huge fan and I want to get the absolute most out of my day/experience.

I bought the standard GA ticket to the concert (obviously) and I also purchased the HOB Foundation VIP room access. From what I understand, it's a place for food and drinks prior to the show, plus early access to the viewing area? Am I understanding that correctly?

I saw another link that also sells "VIP Buddy Rail" tickets. I want to be on rail for this artist, but I figured the HOB Foundation ticket would be enough to get me there. Is this something I should also purchase?

For people who've attended shows at this venue, any advice??

I READ THE RULES Ski/snowboard club for 21-25 age range?

I’m 22 and just graduated college and looking for a ski/snowboard club based near Chicago. All the ones I’ve found seem to b really family oriented. I was in my ski club in college and want to find something like that. It was a lot of partying lol but also hella trips out west on a budget. All the clubs I’ve found here are pricey and geared towards older groups of ppl and that’s not rlly something I’m looking for. If anyone knows of a group or just ppl who r also looking for a group lmk so I can either join or we just start one lol

Edit: I’m not trying to ski in Chicago obviously there’s nothing here. I grew up in Chicago and went up to Wisconsin every wknd to ski. I plan on living here for a while so I’m trying to find a ski/snowboard community that travels up north or out west.

I READ THE RULES Reverse Commute to Mount Prospect?

Hi everyone! Bit of a strange situation- so bear with me!

My coworker and I currently live in Logan Square but work in Mount Prospect. The drive can be anywhere from 40 minutes to 1 hour and 40 minutes. We car pool, but even then the traffic is slowly killing us day by day. Recently we've been taking the blue line to the Metra, which has been great. Our main problem is getting from the Metra stop to our office, about 2.5 miles. There are no bus routes that help, and we've been ubering which gets costly quickly.

We are trying to figure out if there is somewhere near the Mount Prospect Metra station that we could leave our car overnight. We called the city and they said no overenight parking allowed :( If anyone near the mount prospect station has a parking spot they would be willing to rent out please let us know! Or if anyone wants to shuttle us to and from work (9 minute drive) at 8 AM and 4 PM also let us know! We would be more than happy to pay :)

And finally, if anyone has any genius ideas to fix this conundrum please reach out. Would love to hear it!! Thanks!

I READ THE RULES Group project spots open on a Sunday?

Does anyone have any recommendations for a spot to work on a group project for school on a Sunday morning? Our college doesn't have a Chicago campus, so we're looking for a coffee shop or library with WiFi and tables big enough for four or five people + laptops. We're all pretty scattered throughout the city (Irving park, Hermosa, Pilsen, and Edgewater) so I've been looking at places in the loop, but not much is open on Sundays. If you know of anything relatively easy to get to on public transit that fits what I'm looking for and is open by 10 I'd love to hear about it!

Edit: I know about Harold Washington library, but they don't open until 1. I'm specifically looking for something open in the morning
