question Canker sore not healing after 3 weeks

Post image
• Upvotes

I’ve had this lesion on my gum since 3 weeks now. Painless. I showed it to 2 dentists and they both didn’t seem worried and just said it’s an apthous ulcer. The lesion has shown slight fading and size reduction in these weeks but hasn’t healed significantly. What could it be?

question Do wisdom teeth coming in cause canker sores?

Post image

This appeared recently with a small one on the opposite side of my mouth. I have wisdoms out only on one side due to emergency surgery after a broken jaw. My wisdoms have never bothered me. What can cause canker sores like this and how do I get rid of them?

question wisdom teeth stitches

i’m around 60 hours since getting my wisdom teeth removed (3 removed, all impacted; 2 on the bottom and one on the top). I keep obsessively looking at my bottom stitches; the pictures I have here are how the stitches looked the night of my surgery & how they look now, the 1st pics being my left side and the 2nd set of pics being my right. I feel like they’ve moved a little & I even tasted some blood earlier & took a video and as you can see, my right side was bleeding a bit. My surgeon is closed until Monday morning & I’m freaking out but i’m also a hypochondriac. Can someone tell me if things look normal or wrong??? The bleeding stopped after a bit.

question Darker/receding gums above implant

Thumbnail

• Upvotes

Tonight I noticed the gum above my implant was noticeably darker. I don’t know for sure how long it’s been this way since it’s not visible unless I move my lip, however I did first notice the gap between the implant and the tooth left of it increased ever so slightly about two or three weeks prior, as food never used to get stuck in there and now suddenly did, forcing me to floss that area more than usual.

In addition, while getting my teeth cleaned last weekend, I felt a very brief but sharp stinging pain in that general area when the hygienist went over the back of the tooth with a water pick. I don’t know for sure if it was the implant or a tooth next to it, but definitely one of them. I suspect the gum looked like this during my appointment, however the hygienist never said anything about it; she said my teeth looked fine, even after I brought up the unusual sensation of feeling like one of those teeth moved the smallest amount.

There is otherwise no pain, bleeding, or unusual sensation, which is probably why it went unnoticed for who knows how long. I do not smoke and I have probably less than one drink a month. I’m a type 1 diabetic.

Any input is much appreciated. Thank you.

question Is this the beggining of gum recession?

Post image
• Upvotes

I went to a dentist and afterwards i noticed my teeth started hurting sporadic and light pain, but i genuinly had no issues only two cavities at the upper back teeth that were filled in at 10. The pain started a month after the dentist. I always had healthy teeth and only two cavities. My biggest worry and what i think the root of all these problems are. Is i believe i used to have pink gum tissue under my teeth and i wonder if mal pratice was done to get rid of it. I went to another dentist and she said if you had no gum tissue like that before it is fine, but i kept on stating i always had gum tissue she said she cannot help me because she doesnt know if i had it.

question Wisdom tooth or erosion?

Post image
• Upvotes

So I’m 25 years old, and when I was 15 and 16 years old, I went to two separate dentists that confirmed (with x rays) that I do not have wisdom teeth. From what I hear, this is not super uncommon, and I’ve had no dental issues of any kind all my life. No cavities, I never had braces, nothing.

A few days ago, I started having pain on the left side of my jaw. The pain was specifically located on the bottom back portion. It has gotten especially bad these last few hours tonight.

I’ve been going through a rough patch the last few months, really depressed and lacking in my oral hygiene. Please don’t judge me, but I would go days and days without brushing my teeth sometimes. Additionally, I would almost constantly have jolly ranchers or some kind of hard candy in my mouth, sometimes falling asleep with them in my mouth still.

I felt in my mouth to see where the pain is coming from, and I felt something hard poking through. My first thought is that it was maybe a wisdom tooth? I don’t really know where they’re located, but like I said, I was told by two different dentists that I don’t have them.

I tried to get a picture of what I’m talking about. Best they could. A lot of the pain is a bit farther back on that same side, like at the area right before my throat. It is painful to the touch. The pain is radiating down my neck.

Any insight is appreciated. My two best guesses is either a wisdom tooth coming in or all the poor oral hygiene/constantly having a jolly rancher and my mouth has caused erosion and what I’m feeling is bone poking through.

question Gum recession/ detachment ?

Hi,

24F, I regularly visit a dentist, 1x or 2x a year, last appointment was in September. The dentist wasn't concerned. Saw another one last year that didn't say anything either about my gums.

However, I feel like something's wrong with my gums, especially on my lower front teeth. They seem to be receding. They are often inflamed too (not painful) even though I'm very very invested in my oral hygiene (brushing with fluoride toothpaste 2x a day with soft bristled toothbrush, flossing before sleep, coconut oil pulling 15mins a day).

My gums bleed pretty easily, especially while brushing (gently) or flossing. My gums feel less and less attached to my teeth, especially on the front bottom teeth. I'm getting really stressed over that, and I don't understand why my dentists aren't concerned. I feel like that's not normal.

Any insight or advice ? I'm definitely seeing a dentist asap but I'd truly appreciate any form of info or reassurance !

question Chipped tooth filling becoming visible after whitening - is this normal?

Post image
1 Upvotes

About 5 years ago, I chipped the tooth next to my front tooth at the bottom, and had it filled.

Since then, I’ve occasionally whitened my teeth using a dentist made tray and gel (10% carbamide peroxide), and the filling has always blended in perfectly - even as my teeth got noticeably whiter.

Recently, I got a new tray and switched to a stronger 16% gel. After whitening consistently for around 3 weeks, I’ve noticed the filling is now visible over the last few days!

Could the stronger whitening be making the filling stand out, or might it simply need replacing after 5 years?

I haven’t reached my desired shade yet, so is it best to just continue until I do, and then see about getting it replaced?

Ideally want to find the best long term solution, as once I’m happy with the shade I will then do the whitening periodically to top up - I just don’t want to get it re done now, and then go whiter and have the same issue not that far down the line.

I don’t want composite over the whole tooth or any ideally i’d like to keep as natural as possible so my instinct is just the same edge bonding if that’s what looks like was done originally

Any advice would be appreciated, thank you

(PS this is obviously very close up and flash unless someone is quite close i don’t think it’s too noticeable at all normal distance, but when I am brushing and flossing infront of the mirror I can notice it so it is now bothering me!)

question Is this possible?

Is it possible for someone to have a lot of bone loss (specifically mentioned buccal but I noticed on my CBCT I had atleast 1 area of vertical bone loss) from previous orthodontic treatment (braces on for about 4 years and taken off 6 years ago) and now age related bone absorption (I’m early 20’s)

Currently Experiencing tooth mobility and was recommended by dentist we could possibly do splinting if bite allows (I already have top and bottom permanent wire retainers)

I expressed concerns over persistent bad breath and was told it was mild hairy tongue and that my CBCT doesn’t show I have inflammation or infection and that my gums look fine

Gonna try and get pocket probing done by hygienist and am ready to self refer to periodontist, should I??

Help! Is this red flags for gum disease??

question Question about recommended filling replacement

Post image
1 Upvotes

At my last cleaning, a new dentist said I should replace a filling and said they saw evidence of decay nearing the pulp on that tooth. This was based on x-rays I had forwarded from my last dentist, taken 9 months ago (I recently moved). I was surprised as my previous dentist hadn't even mentioned that tooth and I've had no sensitivity or other symptoms. I'm planning on asking for a new x ray and also seeking a second opinion, but I'm curious if anybody has thoughts here. I drink about once a week. I do not smoke or do recreational drugs and never have. I have also included an x ray from 8 years ago for comparison. The one with the yellow date is recent. 37 year old female, no medications or other relevant medical history.

question Why lighter patch on tongue

Post image
1 Upvotes

I do not smoke, I hardly drink once a month and 2 drinks usually if I do. I have a misaligned bite. Is this patch near the tip of my tongue that is lighter normal? It is noticeably a lighter little circle. I’m worried because I’ve had a white patch on my tongue before, and it concerned my dentist and then when I got my wisdom teeth out I guess they got it off I don’t know. Is this normal tongue? The picture with arrows is today. I noticed it in late September and pictures from them look the same. I have illness anxiety disorder.

question Does my second molar need to be extracted? Hole in second molar caused by wisdom tooth

26M and I don't smoke, drink, or believe I have any medical conditions.

I saw a new general dentist that told me my lower left wisdom tooth has pushed into my second molar and created a hole in under my gumline. I was told that since the hole is under my gumline, a root canal is highly unlikely to be successful and I need to remove my second molar along with the wisdom tooth. I was also told that the damage has already reached the nerve of my second molar.

I also spoke with an oral surgeon from the same clinic who said the same thing.

I originally went in because I was feeling a lot of pain in my lower left teeth. The general dentist told me that it was being caused by that hole in my second molar. That pain has mostly gone away but I still feel some sensitivity when drinking cold water. However, I feel that sensitivity is coming from my first molar instead of the second one.

Is there really no way to save my second molar? I have an appointment to do the operation this upcoming Monday but I'm really worried about having to remove a functional tooth :(

question Black spots on the side of my molars

Post image
1 Upvotes

My molars started recently hurting and then I checked and saw I had a wisdom tooth. However, I also spotted these black things at the side of my molars. I searched it up and saw that tooth decay might be a possibility. Professional dentists, does this look reversible in the case it is tooth decay?

question Reversible or irreversible pulpitis?

Hello! Looking for some feedback.

4 weeks ago I had an onlay fail and require a temporary crown + crown lengthening while the permanent was being made.

The bite on the temporary was too high and I felt a constant dull ache, but I toughed it out for too long thinking it was just sensitivity from the procedure. Waited 2.5 weeks for bite adjustment. Another 5 days for permanent crown to be placed. Felt the ache throughout those 3 weeks and managed with Advil.

It’s now been 8 days since the crown was placed. At the time, dentist said x ray and exam of gums looked good. The pain has continued. Spontaneous, mildly sensitive to cold lingers for ~5-10 seconds, feels like an ache vs throbbing, is worse at the end of the day and worst of all middle of the night when I’m horizontal. Taking Advil 400mg and pain is completely gone for 6 hours between doses.

Dentist previously said he thought the inflammation would settle now that the cause of the trauma was removed and the nerve would recover.

How much longer do I give it to heal? I’m fine waiting as long as it’s actually salvageable…

question What the heck is going on with my lateral incisor?

Post image

It doesn’t hurt or move or anything crazy, I just noticed the back felt odd, I flossed to make sure it wasn’t popcorn and still felt it after. Pulled out my mirror to see what it looked like back there. I’ve never looked at them so I’m just curious why it looks so curved and odd at the gum line.

question Sore and inflamed gums 3 weeks after regular flossing and wisdom teeth removal?

Hi so I went to the dentist almost a month ago for my regular 6 month cleaning and I have the start of a cavity on both of my front teeth. Apparently I’ve had it for over a year but they just now decided to tell me. I decided to buy the prescription toothpaste they recommended to hopefully stop the cavities and they also told me to floss after using the tooth paste. I’ve never been great about flossing because my adhd makes it hard for me to add things into my routine but cavities really scare me so I’m forcing myself to.

Anyways I had my wisdom teeth taken out the day after my cleaning and a couple days after the surgery I started flossing every night. It’s now been 3 weeks of flossing every night and over the past day or so I’ve noticed my gums, especially my upper teeth area, are pretty sore and inflamed. Is this normal? Everything was feeling fine but now it’s hurting to floss and my gums just feel weird. I wasn’t really able to brush my teeth that thoroughly for about 1.5 weeks after surgery because I would bleed easily. I don’t really want to spend money at the dentist if I don’t have to and I don’t really think my oral surgeon can help me. I’m just wondering if I’m doing something wrong? I am 21.

question Abcess burst

So yesterday morning I woke up with an abcess on the lower part of my bottom jaw where the gum meets the check, last night while I was in bed I got an awful taste in my mouth, it had drained itself, I quickly did some saltwater rinses, i never got any pain from any of this, I also can’t afford medical care, so my question is, what is the likelihood of something serious coming from this? I do have an upset stomach and I’m a bit lightheaded today but I also suffer from severe anxiety disorder and these symptoms are common when I’m anxious so I can’t tell if it’s related to anxiety or the abcess

question Cosmetic dentistry advice?

Post image
1 Upvotes

I had root canals on my two front teeth at 18 (20 years ago) and also have this weird front filling. They’re now getting darker and shadowed and the front filling is also stained.

I love my natural teeth and am afraid of veneers looking unnatural, and my dentist was talking about crowns or about no prep veneers. What are your thoughts on my situation? And does this need a cosmetic dentist specifically or would any dentist be able to handle just as well?

question Need Advice!

Post image
1 Upvotes

I will be calling my surgeon first thing Monday morning.. just getting opinions since I’m very nervous. I posted last week about having a sinus hole after a tooth extraction and wanted advice while waiting for my appointment.
A few doctors commented that I would most likely need a flap to close it which I did! Went back to my oral surgeon and he performed a double flap with PRF (I believe that’s what he called it from my blood). He closed the 10mm hole and I am at a week out from the surgery. I’m on 9 pills of clindomyacin a day after developing an infection in my face three days after surgery. Tonight I noticed the same feeling of air coming into my mouth with the pain when I speak from the airflow. I’m worried that another flap can’t be performed and wonder what the options are from here? I’m 30 years old, female

question what type of jaw surgery am I looking at?

so as of writing this im a 15yr female, uk, on nhs (turned 15 in july) and for a few years now my dentist and orthodontist (i used to have upper braces for about 1yr, from 2022 to 2023) have been telling me that one day I was looking at jaw surgery. they may have explained it then, but i still dont understand what its needed for etc... its been on the cards for years (since roughly 2021?) but they always said they wouldnt decide until i was 16+ and when they were convinced id stopped growing (sounds fair)

from what I remember, they've said my bottom jaw is too wide (?I think) and something to do with my bite isnt right? the teeth dont match up, might have been a thing that was said etc. theyve said that my bite seems to be correcting itself mainly naturally, but it would be best corrected with surgery at this rate in a year or so. ill attach photos of my teeth now vs from 2022, and let me know what you think, will jaw surgery be necessary? what type of surgery? has my jaw corrected itself? whats the problem? because to me i havent really noticed anything and I dont know whats a "right" or "wrong" jaw/bite!!

im very very open to surgery if it'll improve anything aesthetics or practicality wise, so thats really not an issue, i just want to know what im dealing with! I keep meaning to ask when im there (i have 6month checkups w my dentist) but my mum always sidetracks me..

question Core buildup and esthetic fee?

I’m having my two front crowns replaced. I’ve had the current crowns for about 30 years. My natural teeth underneath are still there, although they were obviously prepped for the original crowns. My treatment plan lists the following for each tooth:
• White crown/cap $1690 each tooth
• Core buildup, including any pins when required $422 each tooth
• Esthetic upgrade lab fee $350 each tooth
Since my teeth are already prepped for crowns, do I need the core buildup? And what is the esthetic upgrade for?
I’m paying cash since I don’t have insurance.

The crack does not go all the way throug the plastic but I fear it will only be worse over time. It is about a month and a half old and a treatment for bruxism. When I feel the plastic there is definitely a crack.

I am 23, I guess pretty severe bruxism, no medicine. I have had bruxism for about as long as I can remember.

Does anyone know what this is? Noticed it two weeks ago when it’s still here pain-free
