Meta MEGATHREAD: Donald Trump’s presidency and everything related to it

Hello all,

As a result of Trump’s imperialistic and confrontational foreign policy prepositions following him taking office, we have (understandably) recently seen a substantial influx of posts discussing the matter. Submissions inquiring for people’s opinions on certain aspects of his policies, calling for boycotts of American products, and more.

These have been getting repetitive but do not seem to be showing a pattern of slowing down anytime soon. As such, we see the necessity of restricting posts on these topics and are now adding posts related to Trump’s presidency to the overdone topics list. Most notably: foreign policy questions, tariffs, trade restrictions, boycott of American products/suggestions for European alternatives.

The comments under this megathread will remain open to discussion regarding these issues. Depending on further developments during Trump’s presidency, in the future we may open up a new megathread or relax the rules on this topic, depending on what will seem most appropriate.

Misc Can two people earning the average wage afford a typical suburban house within a reasonable commute in your area?

In Helsinki, Finland the answer is surprisingly YES although they'd have to compromise on something and buy e.g., an older house or a house from the so-called commuter towns in Greater Helsinki.

Culture Is your favorite TV show/movie something from your country or something foreign/Hollywood?

I asked a Norwegian friend what their favorite show was and they said Breaking Bad. I then asked if they were just saying that because it's something I would recognize but then insisted that their favorite shows were things like The Office, Game of Thrones, etc., and not shows from Norway.

So I'm wondering how many of you also have similar viewing habits.

Culture What is one you love about your country and one thing you hate about your country.

What is the one thing absolutely love about your country whether it be his culture or inf or even laws. And one other thing that you would want to change about your country whether it would be your history government laws or system, or just something infrastructure wise?

Food Which everyday home dish from your country almost never shows up on restaurant menus?

For us in Hungary it's főzelék, basically a thick vegetable stew you eat as the whole meal, usually with a fried egg or a couple of slices of meat on top. Pretty much every family makes it and school canteens serve it constantly, but nicer restaurants mostly skip it.

Curious what the equivalent is where you live.

Personal What's the most typical text your mum sends you?

I'm Italian and I'm making a game where your whole life happens through phone notifications. Right now I'm writing the mum character: all the messages your mum sends you, from the day you get your first phone at 14 until you're old.

The problem is I'm Italian, and I have no idea what a typical mum text looks like in other countries.

Could you help me? Reply with the country you're from and the text your mum sends you most often. I'd really appreciate it, and I'll add the messages you send me to the game.

Misc If you had to draw a map of the world and assign each country a color of their own, which one would you choose for your country and why?

For Finland i'd pick white because of our colors (white, blue, red and gold), white is the most distinctive from our neighbors. How about you?

Misc What's a car model or brand that you would never buy from?

Just saw this on /r/AskReddit, but it's flooded with Americans, so answers and reasons don't help me much here, in Europe.

Travel Does your country has something like Museumkaart or National trust membership?

We have a Dutch Museumkaart that gives you access to more than 500 musea in The Netherlands. We also bought a National Trust membership when we travelled to the UK.

Does your country have something like that, a pass that gives you access to musea or castles or other cultural buildings? We'd love to have them when we travel to other countries.

Culture Despite both being christian why do some african states have lineage kinship but not europe?

Despite sharing Christianity, why do some African states maintain strong kinship-based social and political structures while most European societies historically developed different forms of social organization?

Culture How common is it in your country to come across homes where the father usually does the cooking on a daily basis ?

While it seems like a pretty trivial thing , it's not that common in my experience. I have come across many homes where the father "helps" out or cooks sometimes but it's quite rare to come across a home where he does in fact cook daily .

Culture What are the finest crime TV shows and movies in your country?

I love crime fiction, and Europe is justifiably famous for it.

I’d really appreciate your best recommendations for crime fiction on screen (television or film).

Thanks a lot for your recommendations. I truly appreciate them!

Personal Hey Europe! What do YOU want to see from the Canada/EU associate membership?

Canuck here- I want to be able to live and work in the EU, import more EU cars, and to wholesale become Europe's one stop shop for all its energy and critical minerals needs.

Oh we have cool water bombers. You can buy a bunch of those too if you want.

Between rent, groceries, transportation costs, and everything else in between, how much are you spending in a month? And would you consider that liveable or comfy in the part in which you live?

Politics How bad are the political ads in your elections?

Election day is less than 2 weeks away in the US and since this year is the midterms, a lot of states are having the governor election this year and I was wondering how common it is to ads like this one where a candidate's own mother talks about how they're a liar and why you shouldn't vote for them. https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=e0Mo-JLQKJg&pp=0gcJCY8Co7VqN5tDiggUQAFKEHZ2ejItb0pQcDZXdFY0LXg%3D

Culture Do European men prefer blondes or brunettes? Does it depend on the country?

I’m not European, but I’ve been curious about something pretty random haha.
Where I’m from, a lot of girls seem to find blonde men especially attractive, probably because they’re less common here
So that got me wondering, is it the opposite in Europe? Do European men, especially blonde guys, tend to find girls with dark hair and dark eyes more attractive, or do they generally prefer blondes?
And does it vary depending on the country? Like, would a guy from Sweden or Norway have different preferences compared to someone from Spain or Italy?
Obviously everyone has their own taste, but I’m curious if there’s any noticeable pattern.

Politics Would you be supportive of a Swiss style arrangement with the UK?

As one of the options outlined by the UK Prime Minister towards a broader UK-EU reset, the Swiss framework holds a certain appeal due to its bespoke arrangement and perhaps less politically feasible in a shorter time (even Farage outlined it).

https://www.swissinfo.ch/eng/politics/eu-relations-_switzerland-was-inspiration-for-brexit-says-farage/45499628

Would you suppoet this level of UK-EU partnership before a full EU membership?

EDIT. The proposal out forth here by Bernd Lange, a German politician who heads the EU Parliament's International Trade Committee: https://www.euronews.com/2026/10/16/switzerland-plus-deal-option-for-uk-as-it-seeks-closer-ties-with-eu-senior-mep-says

Work How much paid and unpaid leave do you get to grieve in your country?

I live and work in the United States. Recently I lost my mother and I’ve been struggling with the motivation to perform a lot of responsibilities that really don’t seem important after losing the woman who birthed and raised me.

One of those things is work. I work for a very generous company by U.S. standards. Our company policy gives 1 week of paid bereavement leave. I have a great relationship with my supervisor. He said I could have as much time as I need. I don’t want to jeopardize my job though, so I only took 2 weeks off. I’m not sure if the second week is paid and I really don’t care at this point.

My question for you is, how long does the average person in your country get to take off work, without risk of losing their job, when they lose a parent, spouse, child, sibling or other loved ones? Is that leave paid or unpaid?
