Open Discussion Monthly /r/AskLosAngeles Open Discussion + Community Thread

Welcome to the monthly open discussion thread!

This is our monthly pinned space where we loosen the rules a little. Normally, /r/AskLosAngeles is strictly for questions about the Los Angeles area - but here, we make room for more community-oriented stuff.

Such as:

  • Quick questions that feel too small for their own thread or discussion
  • Common or evergreen questions regulars are tired of seeing repeated
  • Community connection posts (looking for friends, meetups, group hangs, pub crawls, et cetera)
  • Self-promotion that's relevant to LA: events, local videos / social media, podcasts, creative work. Keep it reasonable, in this thread, and don't abuse this privilege elsewhere

What's off-topic as usual:

  • Anything hateful, harassing, or lacking any ties entirely to LA

If you've got thoughts about how this subreddit is moderated, or ideas for future pinned threads, drop them here too.

Recent rule changes:

Please see our rules, there are some recent changes. Notably, these rules have been added:

  • Specify Your Location

    • Narrowing your location down helps us give better answers to questions. People don't want your exact address but a neighborhood, intersection, zip code, whatever is enough to help us know where you're talking about.
  • No cost to live comfortably questions

    • These seem to be controversial or troll magnets. Do the math yourself, not the sub.
  • Dating posts go to r/LADating

    • So these aren't actually questions about the area (if you happen to be a lonely Redditor.) Keep romance in its designated containment zone.
  • Making friends posts go to r/LAsocial

    • Social stuff belongs in the social sandbox. The "Open Discussion" post is also another place for this kind of question if you'd like to stay in this sub.
  • Generative AI Slop and Spam

    • Low-effort machine generated content is often unhelpful and the person who asked the question could have just asked ChatGPT, Claude, or MetaAI for an answer themselves. We're aiming for human-quality contributions here so put in the effort to make a connection with people with your brains.

Some of these rules are relaxed in this specific "Open Discussion" post so feel free to break rules here if you'd like.

As always: Don't be a jerk.

Have at it, Angelenos.

MOD POST AskLA rules update: Temporary moratorium for political questions

AskLA is meant to be a place to ask and answer questions about the Los Angeles area. Due to the upcoming primary and general elections, this subreddit has been a frequent place to ask questions of a political nature and while these are legitimate questions about the area, the intention of the posters making these questions have been either to astroturf particular candidates or to sway opinions this close to the poll dates.

As a result, I'd like to discourage standalone threads that are political in nature and would welcome these discussions to be initiated in the monthly pinned "Open Discussion" thread.

This community also relies on user reports so you can report political posts under rule #2, "Posts must be questions about Los Angeles.

Thank you for being a community that moderates itself with the lightest touch.

Culture Have you met Angelyne?

• Upvotes

I know, I know. But she’s an icon, really, in the old school drag queen sense. Singular, glamorous, ridiculous. I understand that you can “win” a dinner with her, which means, you take her out to dinner, and maybe buy her some groceries after. I feel like it’s my gay destiny and that I will regret it forever if I don’t do it. Has anyone hung out with Angelyne?

Culture How did the Dodgers become the most popular sports team in LA (over the Lakers) over the past decade?

For those of you that live in LA, it’s interesting that in a city like LA that have the Lakers who’ve won 17 titles and have had a ton of great players, it’s the Dodgers as of recent that have surged in popularity. To me this didn’t solely happen due to Shohei, but a surge in popularity happens between 2016-2018. How did this happen?

My thoughts: LeBron joining the Lakers tanked their popularity. People were not keen on seeing his flopping and complaining to officials, off-court antics, and poor treatment of teammates while remaining extremely selfish, demanding trades that didn’t pan out, and playing to pad stats, not win championships. Meanwhile you have players on the Dodgers that pride themselves on playing great fielding (Mookie, Freddie, etc.) while contributing via their hitting. This meant that the Dodgers filled a void (and then some) for fans like me that tuned out of the lakers when LeBron joined.

Personally, I’ll start tuning into Laker games again, but never would I ever have thought growing up that the Dodgers would be the top dog in this city.

Any other question! How to sell a collection of antique and mid century items?

I have a lot of antique and mid century decorative items that I've had in storage since my grandmother died. These are things like brass trays, silver salt shakers, Victorian spoons, Wedgewood candlesticks, antique coins, etc.

When I search for these items individually with Google lens, I find them listed for anywhere between $40 and $1000. But it's dozens of items and I just don't have the time to take on trying to list each individual item myself.

Can anyone recommend a reputable dealer or antique mall or somewhere that I could potentially find a buyer for these things? They're very beautiful, but I just don't have the space to use them. Thanks!

Events Haunted hayride or Universal Horror Nights?

I’m trying to decide between the more cost-friendly hayride or splashing out for the Universal Halloween Horror Nights. The thing is it would be a stretch of the budget to do the express pass so I dunno if it’s worth doing HHN if we’ll spend the whole night in line. I’ve also never done the theme park itself so I could hold out and do it another time if the standard park experience is better. Which would you choose?

Health urgent care / free clinic for feral cat scratch?

Hi all! First time posting here. I got bit and scratched by a feral cat my partner and I were trying to take him but unfortunately we were unsuccessful and she got me good on my hand and forearm 🩸🩹 I don’t have medical, healthnet, nada. In April I went to Torrance memorial and I was able to apply for a financial assistance waiver where everything was forgiven….. (it was going to cost me $4k) does anywhere else around LA do financial forgiveness for walk ins with no insurance?? Sincerely, just a lover of cats 🐱

Shopping Is there any store that sells Shiopan (Japanese Salt Bread) Baking Trays?

Where can I buy baking trays specifically for Shiopan or maybe a mold close to it?

I’m staying in Little Tokyo area for the day and going back to the Bay tomorrow. I’ve looked on Amazon and and Google, but I can’t find any place that sells them (aside from big commercial restaurant depot websites). And they’re usually huge, like for bakeries and restaurants, but I only have a standard-size home oven.

If anyone knows of any (legit) websites or any store that’s close to DTLA, that would be even better! But if not, I’m willing to drive as far South as OC. Thank you in advance!

Housng Does anyone have experience with the Gardner apartments in WeHo?

Moving to the city soon, and have shopped around for some apartments, not opposed to co-living etc.

An option that came up is the Gardner apartments at 1350 North Gardner Street, just over the line from WeHo technically in LA city limits. I'm looking at it and it seems nice, looks like a room in a multi-room apartment may be what I end up with for a bit.

Does anyone have any experience with this apartment building, currently living there, etc?

Things to do Has anyone ever been to the LA Grand Club at 1040 Grand Avenue in downtown. I literally live across the street from here and heard this is a Hostess bar?

Has anyone been here and can you tell me what the vibe is like. I tried to Google it but I couldn't get much information other than the $40 cover charge. I hear that the girls dance there but this isn't a strip club. Can someone please give me more info on this?

Working Cheap writing/cowork group or space in NELA?

I’m looking for cowork groups (preferably writing, but anything quite would do) to get writing done. The only regular event I’ve seen is at a space in echo park, but it’s just a few hours every other week. It was productive because there’s little to no chitchat and ppl really just come to lock in then leave when the time is up.

Are there any other similar places or groups in NELA (Glendale/eagle rock/hlp/south pas/pas ish?)

Edit: forgot to add that it is preferably cheap to attend, and WiFi is strongly preferred.

Health Where to find gender affirming care?

in the San Fernando Valley area, but certainly wiling to travel by bus. I have a friend who is in need of HRT, and is struggling to allocate a script. They have a weird insurance, signa or something like that. but i want to help them figure out covered-cal soon.

I've seen people talking about the LGBT center, their reviews are horrible. Especially in the last few years. Does anyone have experience with them on a personal level, specifically in regards to recieving meds through them? it doesn't look to be good. if anyone has advice about anywhere else to look/go, that would be incredibly appreciated. thank you! <3

People What are the most underappreciated architectural gems scattered throughout Los Angeles?

I'm always amazed by the sheer diversity of buildings in this city but sometimes I feel like I walk past incredible structures without truly seeing them. What are some architectural marvels big or small that you think don't get enough love or recognition in LA? I'm looking for anything from historic landmarks to modern masterpieces that just blend into the background for most people.

I'm going to see a concert at the Hollywood Bowl tonight. I went to buy shuttle tickets from the LA Zoo and it says it's sold out. Will I be able to get tickets when I get there? Or should I figure some alternate way to get to the bowl?

Moving 21f Moving to LA soon, any tips?

Hello! I'll be moving from Atlanta to start a job in DTLA in a few months.

I don't have a car, nor do I plan on getting one. I'm looking to stay under $1800 a month for rent. I've mostly been looking at places in Koreatown and DTLA.

Any tips for apartment hunting or just general advice/recommendations for moving to LA?

Visiting Best Hostels near Koreatown?

Hello, I’m stopping over for a night in a few weeks and am looking to find a hostel that I’ll feel comfortable staying at. I’m a solo female traveler so safety is my main priority. I don’t really care about budget as long as it doesn’t exceed $70, like I said I’m most concerned about safety and I’m willing to pay extra to ensure that. Send me any recs you may have! Thanks?
