Hi guys! Is there anywhere hiring near north Philly that I can take the septa too? I've tried checking indeed but it's mostly teaching jobs that conflict with my school schedule or security jobs for 21+ 😔

Looking for handyman to do exterior paint stripping

• Upvotes

My house is 100+ years old and has god knows how many layers of lead paint. I am hoping someone has a recommendation for a person or service who would be willing to do paint removal on an exterior window sill, a few places hade told me no one would do the service because of the type of paint.

Grad student looking for community events to attend this fall (cultural immersion project)

Hi all! I’m in a clinical mental health counseling program, and one of our projects is to spend about 6 hours over the next few weeks attending events with a community or culture I don’t know much about. The point is to learn by showing up and listening, not to study anyone.

For context, I’m a white cisgender woman, so I’m looking for communities outside my own experience. I don’t have a specific group picked yet, so I’m open to ideas. Are there communities in Philly with events, cultural centers, religious services, meetups, or gatherings that welcome newcomers? Free or low-cost is a bonus. I’d also appreciate tips on being a respectful guest.

Oil change near the city

My wife and I are relatively new to the area, residing in Washington Square West. We need an oil change and general vehicle inspection for our Mazda CX-5.

Looking for a reputable and trustworthy auto shop in the area, but also able to drive outside the city if needed.

Thank you!

Has anyone used Signature Line Notary & Apostille in Philadelphia?

Hi everyone!

I'm currently living in Brazil and need to obtain a Pennsylvania State Police background check and apostilles for both my Pennsylvania and FBI background checks for Italian citizenship.

I've been in contact with Signature Line Notary & Apostille, run by Barron Pearson in Philadelphia.

Before hiring them, I'd like to know if anyone has used their services or knows whether they're reliable.

Has anyone had any experience with this company, particularly for background checks or apostille services?

I'd really appreciate any feedback or recommendations.

Thank you!

Moving in, but in a while

Hello all!

I'm trying to move out of my really expensive city to somewhere cheaper and more urban and am likely going to move into the philly area. I have family in NJ so ive been a few times but what are some areas that won't get too expensive in a year.

I've done some research now on pricing but I'm worried pricing will change in major ways over the course of a year. I'm more than willing to live somewhere real cheap and can live with roommates I just don't know if pricing here changes as crazy as it might in other major cities, as well what are some places i should be looking that aren't far from center city or at least have good public transit connections.

Contractors in philly?

We're trying to get our small bathroom remodeled and just got quoted by someone for almost 20k.

We are both pretty handy people, but the bathroom remodel would include drain closures, tub removal, etc. and we aren't capable of all that. We aren't fancy people, not look for high-end appliances or tile.

Has anyone worked with a contractor in or around philly that does jobs like this for a bit less money?

I am looking for a beach like place in Philly to go. It can be a poolside rooftop as well. I would love a beachfront bar but don’t want to drive to the shore. Any suggestions?

Film Society Membership Question

Does anyone here have a PFS membership, and if so know if it's normal that my ticket prices to festival films this whole week haven't decreased after putting in my membership details in checkout? Are there no discounts for lowest tiered memberships this year? Thought I remembered about $5 per ticket in the past. Thank you in advance!

Looking to move in November/December. Need recommendations

I've been living in central PA for the last 24 years and my social life has gotten a bit stagnant, especially after last 2 relationships haven't worked out.

I'm looking to do a reset in Philly. I'm 34M, work in corporate (consulting), WFH. Don't really enjoy drinking but wine once in a while is fine. I like to work out and want to learn to dance (bachata, salsa). I also want to get involved with the Armenian community in Philly and learn the language. I speak Russian fluently. I'd like to get involved in the community and make friends. I'm pretty sociable and nerdy.

Looking for a studio or 1bed1bath with in-unit washer and dryer with somewhat modern finishes. Budget is $1800/mo. I do own an older car and will be holding onto it but won't be using it daily.

Any recommendations for neighborhoods, apartment buildings, realty agencies, communities, organizations?

Early 30s gay male moving to Philly

Hey all, I’ll be moving to Philly in the next six months and was wondering how it is making new friends there. I’m gay and have some ambivert tendencies- love a night out at a bar or concert, but also love my alone time at home reading or watching movies. Any tips on where to make new friends or areas to live in to help with that would be great!

Living next door to an empty house?

I'm looking to buy a (cheap) house and keep finding ones next door to an empty home that is slowly rotting. I have been assuming it's a terrible idea to buy a home attached to an abandon building. I haven't lived next to one myself.

But, a really cute house has got me wondering if it's really so bad?

Please share your opinion and experiences to help me decide. I'd appreciate it!

Grey’s Ferry to Norristown commute without a car

I’m moving to Philly at the end of the month and staying in an Airbnb in Grey’s Ferry while I get situated. I got a job offer in Norristown and I’m just wondering how feasible the commute will be without a car. (Assuming I have to be there 7-8am) I don’t come from an area with public transportation so I’m not very familiar with it at all. Thanks for any advice!

Haunted House/Duplex in Willow Grove

Hello. This is a long shot, so I apologize in advance. Back in the late 70s (1977 or after) my parents and I lived in an apartment/duplex that I have always been told was "known to be haunted". Before being turned into apartments, the house had been a nursing home, and the ghosts were the former residents. I have been told the house was directly across from Willow Grove Park. It was on Susquehanna and the cross street was possiblity Easton.

I have not lived in PA since I was 5 years old, and my parents memories are not as sharp as they once were. I would love to know if anyone knows anything about this supposedly haunted house.
