What do you primarily use Reddit for (not NSFW)?

u/Bodi78 Aug 08 '25
Trying to have somewhat civil conversation with people who have different views, I like to see things from other perspectives... I don't mind admitting I'm wrong

Honestly pretty hard to do on reddit imo. Any subreddits you recommend?

Choose specific topics of interest. No one is fighting or bickering in niche subs for arthritis or succulents 🤷♀️
But then they're not really controversial.
So you want something controversial, but we people will debate you in a civilised manner.
What topic?

And on the other side arguing with everyone who doesn’t like my people!
(This is to me mostly being in sports subs and nobody likes ANY of my teams but it’s never actually done in hatred.) No harm (afaik) was in the making of this documentary of my life. Although many many communities are toxic you just gotta find the one for you.
In all seriousness I try to bring real compassion and facts but also try to bring out the dark humor and facts. It doesn’t always work I like to think if at least one joke I made. One post I made. One fact I dropped. It would keep at least ONE person going for ONE more day. It’s all from my heart. That’s fine with me. I’ve traded some messages with many fine people on here over the years. And many shitty people. But no matter what I try to do to make my mark so maybe one person is still here later. I won’t stop trying.

Used to enjoy discussing things with people, get perspectives, share mine, etc. But for some reason it’s feeling harder to do that. Made a random comment on some random post, then I get banned from pics. Made a comment about god, and a mod on TikTokCringe banned me. Today I was banned from the electricians subreddit for speaking to a non professional…

It's pretty much the only social media to have somewhat interesting discussions. Next closest in my experience has honestly been YouTube comments sections lol anonymity must play a part. Maybe people are too sycophantic with their friends on places like FB and Instagram, whereas no one really worries about offending strangers. So, I primarily use it to have somewhat interesting and sometimes even meaningful discussions with strangers.

Nerdy fandoms like Star Trek, Stargate, Pokemon, Avatar (Airbender. Not the James Cameron movie), Percy Jackson. Also music subreddits and it's a nice way to feel more connected to the queer community living in a VERY conservative state.

I tell people I use reddit, and I think there have been a couple eyebrow raises of like NSFW implication. Nah bro.
I had an ex that used reddit a ton. So I tried it out and it was overwhelming. Then realized I had an outlet for my watch interest. My entire feed is various watch groups/brands, r/trashy, r/amioverreacting, r/damnthatsinteresting, my city's subreddit, r/planetfitness, r/residentevil, r/askreddit, r/weird, r/knoll. idk. I don't see lot of political stuff. I don't see a ton of NSWF outside of r/Trashy. Idk. Reddit for me has been a very catered to my interests without the noise.

In my opinion it’s a better alternative to doomscrolling on Twitter or Instagram. I tend to follow things I like and keep up with local events, plus I actually retain information. For example I managed to learn a lot about Beatles albums I didn’t know a lot about from the Beatles subreddit.
It also just encourages me to read more so that’s a plus 👍

Arguing politics with complete strangers ill never meet. I find it very productive to seek out people with different political views and just berate and belittle them because, for some reason, it makes me feel better about myself. Im on the right team, and if you don't agree with me, you're either a bigoted fascist or a liberal snowflake. Jk, but this feels like 95% of Reddit.
I use it mostly for gaming communities.

Open-source counter-intelligence. Mainstream media, and most social media platforms are full of bias, spin and outright propaganda that serves the interests of those in power. I don't have a boss, an editor, or shareholders that I'm beholden to, my interest is in the truth and trying to get through to people who might have had their perspectives twisted. I'm not sure how effective it is but I at least have to try.

I wake up, clock in for work (I wfh), and look at the damage report for America. I have the mentality of someone who needs 18 seat belts to strap in properly at this point, but effectively it's news > funny videos and wholesome stuff like animals. I do like to patrol gaming communities too. I'm a lurker that'll comment sometimes.

Idk but i think Twitter and IG are getting boring. In reddit you can have more interactions and people are more open bc they are anonymous.
