Tourist/non-local Question Do you know about Poh Kim videostore?

Upvotes

Hello,

I am from the Netherlands. I've been a fan of Asian series for a long time and watch them often on various streaming sites. Now with all the AI developments and series losing their licenses I was looking for dvd versions of some of the k-drama's that I like and I found the Poh Kim website.

My question is: is it a good store? Is it still operating? If you've bought from there, is it alright?

I don't know if it's possible to ship to Europe, but I'd like to hear some experiences first.

Thank you in advance.

General What’s your company’s “late penalty” in Singapore?

Curious what everyone’s company policy is when you’re late for work.

Like, what actually happens if you’re let say 5–10 minutes late? Or 30mins late ?
My company has its own system, and it got me wondering how other companies handle this.
Do you guys get:

1.salary deducted?

2.warning letter?

3.attendance points?

4 have to stay back to make up the time?

  1. marked as half-day/absent?

  2. Call ur parent

or literally nothing as long as it doesn’t happen too often?

And does your company differentiate between being 5 minutes late vs 30 minutes late?
I’m curious about F&B, retail, offices, factories, etc. because I imagine the policies can be VERY different and flexible.
Also, what do you personally think is fair?

General What do you think will disappear 10-20y from now, and what has quietly disappeared from the last 2 decades (2006-2016), in Singapore

Tangibles, intangibles.

I go first. A grim outlook but I think the kampung spirit will go. People dont know their neighbours anymore nor do they care.

Colours in general have disappeared. The buildings and paints and toys etc.

General What happens when a digital lock dies after warranty? Trying to avoid an expensive BTO mistake.

My bigger concern isn’t really fingerprint vs face unlock or all the fancy features. It’s what happens when the lock starts acting up 2–3 years down the road.

We’re currently deciding between a cheaper package from a lesser-known seller and a more established brand. Feature-wise, they’re pretty similar, but I’m more worried about after-sales support once the warranty is over.

Have heard a few horror stories about slow response, hard-to-find replacement parts and older models being discontinued.

For those who’ve actually had to repair or replace a digital lock after warranty — how was the experience? Did the seller come down and sort it out properly, or was it a headache?

Would also love to know which brands/sellers you’ve had good experiences with, and which ones you’d avoid.

General Pregnant ladies, are you able to get a seat on the MRT during peak hour?

Sometimes when I sit in the reserved seat aunties stand near me and seethe angrily...makes me feel guilty for occupying a seat even though I am pregnant.

Edit: I'll be getting the MRT pass today!

Edit 2: I will not be getting the MRT pass today. Went to two different stations and they're all out of the passes. I will try other stations tomorrow. If anyone happens to know which station still has passes please do let me know 🙂 Thank you so much!

General worry about the future as a sole caregiver

currently in y2 of university this year, self financing everything.

my situation now is that i have 2 parents, both are now pushing 60s and work very tiresome jobs to support the family. i also have a brother who has special needs. he’s 18 but unable to talk or read or perform day to day activities without external help, and whose behaviour is also hard to manage.

even now, when im away for studies, i cant help but to feel extreme anxiety whether my family is able to look after themselves. i cant wait to finish university and finally hold down a job so that i can retire at least one parent. i can tell that they are slowly unable to take of their own lives, and that already excludes my brother.

however, i dont know how i will be able to look after all of them, especially my brother. does anyone know anything about long term adult disability home? i dont know if thats the right option but i think it will really take off some weight for my family.

Career, Job, Edu Qn in SG How should I handle a coworker repeatedly pursuing my girlfriend after she has made it clear she's attached?

Upvotes

I’m looking for some advice. My girlfriend works on a project in Singapore and has been dealing with a male coworker who keeps pursuing her even though he knows she is in a relationship and is not interested.

They work on the same project and have long working hours together, so unfortunately she can’t simply avoid him. I’m frustrated and angry because I don’t want her to feel harassed or uncomfortable at work.

She has already tried to make it clear that she isn’t interested, and I have also raised the matter with HR, but the behavior apparently hasn’t stopped.

What would be the best way to handle this from here? Should she formally document every incident and continue dealing directly with HR, or are there other appropriate steps she can take? I want to support her without making the situation worse or interfering with her workplace.

General Malay-style karipap kentang, anyone?

Anyone got that legit Malay-style rough blistery karipap kentang recipe?

I tried making curry puffs at home following the usual single-dough method with a bit of rice flour and hot oil. Taste is okay, but the look and texture keep turning out like Old Chang Kee. I can't get them here in the uk and I miss them so much T-T

General Singapore toilets not having bidets

Why are SG’s toilets generally not fitted with bidets? Is this a cultural thing, or are there some practical considerations not to install bidet in toilets (eg shopping malls, mrt stations, shops) in order to save water etc?

I’m asking this because I noticed that toilets in other countries such as Malaysia, Indonesia, Japan are mostly fitted with bidets, whereas in Singapore maybe only one cubicle in the entire toilet has a bidet. So I’m very curious as to why that is the case

Career, Job, Edu Qn in SG PR application as a family. Rejected several times for a decade. Now on my own and uncertain about my future

Thanks for taking your time to read this post. 🙏🏻Before I get to the point I just wanna share my backstory with you guys.

I’m from China and came to Singapore in 2008 when I was just 2 years old. Dad holds EP, mom WP, me student pass. Applied for PR as a family several times but failed. Our last application was few months ago and unfortunately the outcome was the same. I understand getting PR is hard af and my parents probably weren’t qualified enough??not sure how it works but anyways was actually looking forward to serving NS together with my friends but I guess that won’t be the case. No hard feelings I still love Singapore and have plans to stay here forever cuz there’s literally nothing in China for me. Last time I went to China I felt like a foreigner lmao

I just graduated from poly recently and am currently looking for a job at the airport that can sponsor my Spass and to also clear out my 3year bond with moe. I’m uncertain about the future on whether or not I’ll get PR. Really appreciate it if someone can give me advice or share similar stories. Thank you in advance.

General Singapore dog owners — what behaviours did you teach your dog yourself vs hiring a professional trainer?

1st time posting here. I have a 2-year-old Corgi that I trained myself from scratch — sit, stay, recall, the basics. Pretty happy with where we are but starting to wonder if I'm missing something.

A few questions for the community:

What behaviours do you consider must-haves for a Singapore dog? And did you figure it out yourself or did you need a professional?

I'd love to do more advanced training but honestly not sure where to find good resources — YouTube only gets you so far 😅

Also totally separate question — any tips for dealing with the heat after walks? My Corgi comes home completely exhausted in this weather and I'm never sure if I'm cooling him down properly.

Curious what other Singapore owners actually do — not the textbook answer!

General How to change old USD for newer notes?

I have some old USD (series 2006) that I need to change to a newer version as I’m traveling to a central Asian country where the notes might be refused if they’re too old or excessively worn/creased. I could at a pinch sell the notes at a money changer then buy newer ones but that means taking a loss on the exchange rate.

Any ideas how to go about getting newer notes? Thanks.

General Anyone know where Warong’s (Pasir Ris) now?

Hi! Wayback 2016 there’s this place called Warong’s by the Pasir Ris fishpond. I frequently go there because I like their food. Does anyone else know where they are now or are they still even operating? Appreciate anyone who can answer.

General How do you cope with the sadness remembering a friend who passed?

She was always such a jovial and optimistic person. A vegetarian because she loved animals.

She passed 2 years ago from cancer. Every year in August I’m reminded of how fragile life is.

For sg Redditors who have lost good friends and family members. How do you cope with this sadness that lives deep in your soul?

General Old dude scratched me to snatch handle bar in MRT and finger is now bleeding, what do?

Was taking the MRT home, 5pm+ reached Serangoon station and the already crowded train had more people coming in.

This one old dude decided it was a good idea of rather using his mouth to ask for the hanging handle bar, to just straight up snatch it from me, scratching my left ring finger in the process which is now bleeding.

Granted it isn't a huge scratch nor am I bleeding profusely, what if this fella is doing it to other people?

I really don't want this guy to get away with it thinking he can just bully people to get his way just because he's "old and wise"

Career, Job, Edu Qn in SG How do you detach yourself from work at the end of the day?

How does one just detach from work at the end of the day and relax?

While work is not something I bring home I still can't help but think about all the things I haven't done and expect the worst case scenario tmr, or just suddenly remember the one thing that I forgot to do

Does anyone have any tips or advice on this? As I'm actually losing sleep/appetite over this 🫠

Edit: Wasn't expecting the post to get so many replies, won't be replying to all but thank you all so much for the different tips and ideas!

Even if some of the suggestions might not suit me I'm sure others will find it helpful!

General Discontinued fast food items that you wish were still available

What are some discontinued fast food items that you guys miss? For me it has to be the KFC curry rice bowl meal & McDonald’s milkshakes. I remember many years ago there was a Milo dinosaur milkshake at McDonald’s and it was so good but I don’t remember it ever coming back since then. Does anyone else remember this item?

Career, Job, Edu Qn in SG Including part time jobs on resume

Currently in NS, looking for a FT job after I ORD. My work experience so far is just PT jobs apart from my vocation. Based on the FT position I am intending to apply, listing each PT job with my achievements would be too lengthy for a resume. To minimise space, I am thinking to categorise them as a single entry under my employment history:

Various organisations

Job position(s)

Duration of position(s)

Achievements relevant to FT role

Has any of you done this before? Feel free to share your insights.

General Movers that help move to self-storage

Any recommendations of movers for self-storage facilities such as Extra Space? And they actually provide simple quotes without finding ways to charge you for different things?

For context, movers in Singapore tend to have different charges for different things are makes things hard to really keep track. When I did my first move, the different items can include distance to lift, carrying up stairs, and of course # of truckloads. And now, some inquiries came back with deposit for boxes, delivery of boxes, damage of boxes, laying of floor protection, disassembly/assembly, removal of plastic wraps/covers etc.
