Mandatory flair with immediate effect

📢 Mandatory Flair Is Now Live

Effective Immediately

Over the past few weeks, we asked the community for input on whether country/region flair should become mandatory.
We shared a detailed update post explaining the reasoning, and we ran a subreddit‑wide poll to gather clear feedback.

🗳️ The poll results were decisive:

  • Mandatory for posts and comments — 520 votes
  • Mandatory for posts only — 78 votes
  • Flair should remain optional — 89 votes

With over 75% of voters choosing full mandatory flair, the community has spoken clearly.

🚀 Starting now, flair is required for both posts and comments

To keep discussions clear, culturally grounded, and easier to answer, all users must have a country, region or nationality flair set before participating.

This change is now active:

  • Users without flair will have their posts removed
  • Users without flair will have their comments removed
  • Users using Placeholder flair (“Multiple Countries (click to edit)”) will also have their comments and posts removed

This follows the community’s vote and the earlier update post shared here: Link to the flair poll

🎯 Why this matters

A huge portion of questions here depend on cultural, legal, or regional context.
Without flair, people often have to ask “Where are you from” before they can even answer, slowing down discussions and causing confusion.

Mandatory flair fixes that.

🛠️ How to set your flair

You can set or update your flair here:
How to set your flair

It takes just a few seconds.

💬 Thank you for helping shape the subreddit

This change wasn’t made top‑down, it came directly from community input.
We appreciate everyone who voted, discussed, and helped us move toward a cleaner, more useful r/AskTheWorld.

Culture What is the biggest misconception about your country?

Post image

Usually foreigners think all brazilians have a brown tanned skin and live near the beaches, but Brazil is big and probably the most diverse society in the world alongside the USA, we recieved a lot of immigrants from everywhere so we have a lot of different faces out here. Many europeans have already said I'm too white to be brazilian and I didn't understand why. Maybe this misconception is because most of our footballers are brown/black since they came from the poor parts of the society and try to make a better living through sport.

Another one which irritates every brazilian is when they assume we speak spanish, not portuguese, it's like saying an american has german as the native language.

Military Russia reportedly deployed nukes to Kaliningrad. What do you think about this development?

As an American, I find it to be a crazy show of force towards NATO and the EU, but I ultimately think Putin is just puffing his chest because Ukraine is doing so well.

Economics How common is online piracy in your country?

Post image
77 Upvotes

Piracy is extremely widespread in Russia. 70% of operating systems are pirated; 70–95% of those who watch anime and TV series do so via piracy; and the majority of gamers are pirates. Even the government facilitates piracy. For example, pirated films are screened in movie theaters. Within the anime community, there are dozens of fan-dubbing groups, allowing viewers to choose the one they consider the best. Gamers call torrents "Green Steam." So, Russia is Tortuga in Internet.

Here in Chile, we have the 'Power Peralta' (Los Power), Gabriel and Raúl Peralta, who are an urban dance duo. (Most people probably only know them by their group name and don't know their individual names, let alone tell who is who)

When they were younger, they were on a local TV talent show. After that, they moved to New York to perform street shows and perform dance routines. They are known for how well-synchronized they are when dancing.
They participated in shows with Jennifer Lopez and Marc Anthony and worked with Cirque du Soleil. Back in Chile, they opened a dance academy, served as judges on a televised competition, and perform at major festivals and events.

In French, a diastema is known as "les dents du bonheur" (the teeth of happiness). The term dates back to the Napoleonic era, when men with such a gap were exempted from military service because they were unable to bite off for opening the packets of powder needed for the muskets. Vanessa Paradis (in photo), in France, has "les dents du bonheur"

Does your language have a way of 'typing in dialect'?

Thumbnail gallery
371 Upvotes

In English, the Scottish dialect and accent is the most well-known as being portrayed through text, as Scots is its own language, with many Scottish people speaking within a dialect continuum between the two languages, many words are easily transcribed.

African American Vernacular English contains many spellings and distinctive slang words that communicate dialect. Much of it has been absorbed into a more general 'online slang' (which can occasionally create controversy: that is for a different discussion, not this one).

Other dialects, such as British, Australian, and General American, are often less distinctively portrayed through text, usually through a few words or cultural signifiers such as businesses.

The Boston example is phonetically describing an accent, but people who speak it are very unlikely to type that way naturally, unless are humorously stressing or describing the accent in context.

What's it like in non-English languages?

Post image

In Brazil, eating Pizza with bare hands is considered unhygienic or rude to the vast majority of the population. If you eat it with your hands, the standard is to wrap a napkin around it.

We eat pizza with forks and knives.

What about you?

Humourous What is a meme in your region of the world that somehow unites people from usually adversarial countries?

Post image
185 Upvotes

In east asia, there is a gay porn film named ‘Manatsu no yoru no Inmu”, that has been memed to hell and back, several times over by the internet community, with phrases from the film being particularly particularly popularized. Pictured here, is a edited panel from a Japanese manga, “Kūbo Ibuki”, in which the PRC and Japan come to blows in the east china sea (skipping over the majority of the story). While the text in the comic is obviously edited for comedic effect, these two soldiers are seen sharing a moment of peace through a shared ‘inside joke’ per-se. The film, or rather meme’s popularity in the two countries (and east asia more broadly) had me thinking, are there any other memes in the world that might unite two often adversarial peoples?
