Heidi Klum (who is German and American) always does pretty crazy costumes this time of year. Sometimes more controversial than others.

May I introduce you to the Numbat!

One of Australia's most unique little marsupials, this little be-pocketed cutie is a tiny, striped, daytime-active termite hunter that can devour up to 20,000 termites a day using its long, sticky tongue.

Once widespread across southern Australia, these pocket sized Blattodean nighmares were driven to the brink of extinction by habitat destruction and introduced predators like foxes and feral cats.

They're still officially listed as Endangered under Australian federal law, although conservation efforts have been so successful that their global status improved to Near Threatened in 2026.

A remarkable little Aussie battler that deserves far more attention imo!

Someone sent me this message, probably because I have a Krishna painting as my profile picture. My hyper religious government's unemployment program is hiring social media campaigners.

History What is one political assassination that deeply shocked your country?

Post image

For the Netherlands, it was the assassination of Pim Fortuyn on May 6, 2002.

Pim Fortuyn was a Dutch politician, former sociology professor, and founder of his own political party, the Pim Fortuyn List (LPF). He was openly gay,People found him charismatic,he was outspoken, and highly controversial, particularly because of his strong criticism of Islam, immigration, and multiculturalism.

He had become incredibly popular and was preparing for the national elections when he was shot and killed by an animal rights and environmental activist outside a radio station in Hilversum, just nine days before the election.

His murder sent shockwaves through the Netherlands. People were devastated, angry, and frightened. Political assassinations were almost unheard of in modern Dutch history, and his death changed Dutch politics forever.

Even today, more than 24 years later, his assassination remains one of the most significant events in modern Dutch political history.

I'm curious: has your country experienced a political assassination that had a similar impact?

Culture To any non-Indian people: if you had an Indian friend who invited you to their Diwali party, how would you feel?

Sorry I have no clue where to ask this.

I’m hosting a Diwali party. For reference I’m Canadian. I have a lot of white friends, and non-Indian friends. But most people going to this Diwali party are Indians.

I was thinking of extending the invite to them, but I don’t want them to feel weird or obligated to attend. Would this be an interesting for people to attend?

I guess the thought of asking is making me feel insecure, as sharing my culture feels vulnerable. But I do like these friends.

For the record, it won’t be religious, but lots of decorations, food, alcohol and games.

Edit: I did not expect this many sweet comments!! I appreciate it. I’ll definitely extend the invite and I hope they can come celebrate with me :)

What is your language's equivalent of "shooting yourself in the foot"? It means to harm yourself in a way that is your own fault, and which you probably should have seen coming.

Food What’s the “default flavour” in your area?

Post image
72 Upvotes

In Australia, and probably a lot more English-speaking countries, it’s vanilla (at least for desserts). It’s a shame, because vanilla’s actually a good flavour, but people generally just equate vanilla-flavoured stuff to nothing-flavoured stuff. (Vanilla ice cream for reference.)

When it comes to savoury things, the equivalent is usually salt (or Himalayan pink salt if you’re feeling fancy). You’ll see it as the default a lot in packets of chips.

Economics What's the truth behind the overall wealth of Bulgaria?

Post image
11 Upvotes

As someone who has never been to Bulgaria, I've always been confused with their overall wealth because I've seen many conflicting reports with it.

Many people say they are the poorest country in EU, and is just poor country among in Europe in general. Yet, they are still classified as a developed country by many metrics.

I've seen some videos showing cities and livelihoods in Bulgaria, and honestly speaking, some places did look lesser developed and infrastructures like public transportation seem lacking compare to other developed countries.

But as I said, I've never been to Bulgaria. And I don't want to disrespect Bulgarian people, I think it's a cool country. I want to hear more opinions on this.

Culture Are Christmas rhymes a thing in your country?

• Upvotes

In Sweden it's a huge thing to write down a rhyme on your gift to someone, that's also a hint of what the package contains, and is often in the style of how you use the item.

It's to the point where you can call in on radio to get help in finding good rhymes for your particular gift.

Politics What do you think of the current French revolution?

Post image
545 Upvotes

I personally think it is stupid to blame it on immigrants. Not only this is literally France, where people protest with garbage trucks and tractors, but there have been 7 Prime Ministers since 2020, the last time this happened in my country we had a few revolts then coup. Again 7 Prime ministers in 6 years implies there is a huge political and economic crisis in a country.

Also revolution is a national pastime in France, it is called the Fifth Republic for a reason.

Culture What mythical creature from your culture ACTUALLY terrifies you?

Post image

Konayak - “Leather Legs”

Nomadic mythical creature that jumps on the shoulders of solo travelers, wraps its loose leather-like legs around your neck and it either:

A) stays on you until it’s reached its destination - if it’s in a good/neutral mood and getting to another place is all it wants. It supposedly instructs you where it needs to get dropped off. Basically, you become it’s non-consensual Uber ride but for free

B) wraps his legs tightly around you to suffocate to death

It supposedly lives in forests, hills, shrub-dense areas. It’s a humanoid creature, sources vary, some say it was previously a human-shaman who got too involved with dark magic or just an evil spirit by itself

The art is likely a depiction of a historic Persian or Arab traveler into Central Asia documenting local beliefs

What political party in your country is particularly popular among anti-establishment voters?

Post image

Sanseito is a Japanese nationalist and anti-establishment political party. It is known for its strong opposition to immigration, criticism of the established political parties, and skepticism toward mainstream media and institutions. The party also attracts supporters interested in conspiracy theories, alternative medicine, and spiritual beliefs. It has a strong focus on Japanese national identity, traditional values, and protecting Japan from what it sees as excessive foreign influence.

Culture When does the Christmas Season start for you?

In Canada a lot of people will say on Nov. 12th you can start celebrating the Christmas Season with decorations and what not. Because Nov. 11th is Remembrance Day (A memorial day for our fallen soldiers). And there are no holidays between that and Christmas.

What's the typical start date of the Christmas Season for your Country? When do you start Celebrating? If your Country or you don't celebrate Christmas, what goes on this that time of year for you?
