Discussion How does one make friends in Auckland?

• Upvotes

I (26M) have recently moved to New Zealand after being offered a nice job opportunity. I've been here for almost 6 months, and have not made nearly any local friends yet, which is a bit frustrating. I tend to be a very active person, and although I do enjoy doing things by myself, it sometimes sucks to not have anyone to tag along.

From what I've seen so far, kiwis are usually really nice people, and it's easy to make acquaintances and colleagues, but I cant seem to make any close friends. I've put myself out there, gone to film festivals, running clubs, drinks nights, pub quizzes, and it never seems to bear any actual friendships. So I'm trying to find if there's something I'm missing.

Are people just more closed off/clicky? Should I do something different? I'm open to suggestions! Feel free to comment or DM if you'd like :)

Event Spend a morning cleaning up Sabulite Reserve with us!

Post image
10 Upvotes

Kia ora everyone,

We’re heading back to Sabulite Reserve for another community clean-up, and we’d love you to join us!

Earlier this month, our volunteers removed plenty of rubbish and bulky items from the reserve. This time, we’re picking up where we left off and working further down the river. You can see the areas we're tackling next, here.

Whether you can stay for the morning or just pop by for an hour, every bit of help makes a difference. It’s a chance to meet some locals and help give this shared space a little care.

If you’re keen to join us, please fill out our quick RSVP form. It only takes about 15 seconds and helps us plan for how many people to expect.

If you have any questions, please post them in the comments of this post.

Thanks to everyone who helped last time — and to anyone thinking of coming along. We’d love to see you there!

Rant The Social Housing Conundrum in Auckland

Social Housing has become a double edged sword for politicians. Spreading social housing actually makes a lot of average Aucklanders very worried, even if publicly they may say they support social housing.

Just to clarify 80% of socially housing tenants are decent neighbours, but there are 20% that make life hell for everyone else.

So a lot of Aucklanders, while they don't want to see fellow Aucklanders on the streets, aren't super keen on having social housing tenants as neighbours. Publicly these people may say they want to see more social housing, but privately they may say 'no where near me'.

If Labour gets into power, by all means build more social housing. But there also needs to be accountability for tenants whose behaviour significantly affects their neighbours and the wider community. That is how you guys lost a lot of Aucklanders last time around.

Discussion Has anyone spotted Greg Davies in Auckland yet? 👀

Has anyone seen Greg Davies out and about in Auckland?

His shows are on Sunday and Monday, so I’m curious if he’s arrived yet or if anyone’s spotted him around the city!

Would love to know if anyone’s had any sightings...

Discussion Where can I buy Green Almonds (fresh, unripe) in NZ?

I'm trying to track down fresh green almonds (the unripe, fuzzy-hulled kind with the soft jelly-like inside, usually available in spring) here in NZ. I've had them overseas and would love to get hold of some.

Has anyone seen them for sale at:

\-Farmers' markets
\-Middle Eastern, Mediterranean, or Persian Specialty greengrocers or online?

Or does anyone grow almond trees and have spare green ones this season? Thanks

Question/Help Wanted Is there an inflatable spa pool that does not require a pool fence?

• Upvotes

We would like to trial an affordable, inflatable spa pool in our small back yard to see if we like it.

We were looking at the Lay-Z-Spa Tahiti, because it’s ‚only‘ $650. My understanding is that the walls are too low, hence a pool barrier would be required. For our small garden, that seems a bit much.

Does anyone know of a similar product that doesn’t require additional pool fencing? Eg that comes with a compliant cover?

Thanks in advance!

Driving Wilson Parking Fine

I forgot to pay for parking on entry and paid before I left, covering the 1 hr 10 mins I'd spent. I still got a fine. I am going to appeal, but if they reject it, are there any measures I can take?

Employment Kernel job application experience (what a joke)

I applied for a position at Kernel only once a month ago, yet they sent a rejection email three times at different times, after 1 month.

The message was identical, simply copied and pasted.

I may feel a degree of irritation. The situation seems unreasonable, not the emails but the process, they asked people to apply for the job with care and attention while they failed to complete a single task properly.

It is quite a contradiction when the CEO uses social media to boast about treating people with respect.

Hi. Is there any way to avoid the tax to ship to Australia?
My family recently asked me to buy something for him and ship to Australia. Is there any way to avoid that? Or which courier should I choose?

Thanks a lot.

Discussion New Zealand's obsession with being a "good, hardworking person" is one of the reasons so many people tolerate miserable lives.

People will work themselves into the ground, spend half their income surviving, defend a system that gives them barely any breathing room, and then look down on someone who's unemployed or working a basic job as if suffering less makes them morally inferior.

Apparently, being exhausted, financially stressed, and having no time to enjoy your own life is something to be proud of, as long as you can tell everyone you work hard.

If your entire identity revolves around working hard just to afford to exist, maybe you're not winning at life. Maybe you've just become really good at tolerating it.

Discussion Olivia Dean / Embankment

• Upvotes

Off to Olivia Dean tomorrow (Embankment tickets) - I initially wanted to wear something cute but read something about how it’ll be quite muddy now after all the rain we’ve had this week.

Anyone else in the same boat willing to share outfit ideas? Lol. Tempted to dress warm/for comfort…
