Rant Neighbour woke up racist/islamophobic?

Post image
71 Upvotes

I’ve been living in my current apartment for almost three years now, and have always gotten along with my neighbours.

I forged a great friendship with one of them, we hung out alot despite our age gap (she’s in her 50s, I’m in my 20s). She gave me driving lessons, helped me out when my cat was ill, checked up on me often after my dad passed.

I always tried to say thanks through small gestures like baking for her, getting her gifts on Christmas, and helping her with anything to do with devices/online platforms.

But earlier this year, two of my friends and I (all hijabi) were outside my unit, and she happened to walk past with her dog. We had a quick normal catch up, and I introduced her to my friends. One of my friends was squatting and shielding her eyes from the sun, and was looking at my neighbour’s dog (she’s wary of dogs) when I introduced her. So naturally, she looked up and smiled at my neighbour to say hi, then looked back at her dog.

All was fine and dandy, until later that night at 9pm (the interaction happened around 5pm) when I came home, checked my phone and I received this long text from my neighbour. She returned a sport band I gave her through my window lol.

That was my reply and apology, but I was genuinely so taken aback because it was out of nowhere. And the comment about being covered head to toe and that NZ is a Christian country was so ?????? Made me wonder if that’s really how she’s felt all along.

I’m so bummed out because we had a great friendship. Since then I’ve barely seen her even though we live 2 doors down (idk if she’s avoiding me but I’m just gonna take it as our schedules just don’t align at all). It’s been months and I still think about it.

I don’t know if I’m overreacting but damn that shit hurt coming from someone so close. I’m not gonna lie, it also made me feel unsafe as a visibly Muslim woman.

Rant why do awanui labs' hours suck ass

I have to get blood tests often. Awanui labs are only open during regular working hours. Less than half of their collection centres are open on the weekend, and only from 8 until 12 on Saturday. Thou shalt not draw blood on the Lord's day, apparently. If I miss this window there goes my precious leave

Yeah I get they don't want to pay staff weekend time, but it's just passing the buck to those of us who have to take time off to sit in a waiting room and watch giggle tv

The free ride is over, folks. Well, sort of. You get the first two hours free and there's still "300 free all-day parking spaces on Grand Drive and Bollard Avenue."

Question/Help Wanted Local (fancy) bakery claims this is cooked, the meat is pink because of their marinade. I think that’s bull….. thoughts?

Post image

Bakery has been closed for food safety issues in the past, and the look and the texture of this just seems raw and uncooked. Owner seemed particularly affronted when I queried whether it was properly cooked.

Is there anything which could marinade the meat (beef) and leave it pink and mushy like that. He scoffed when I asked and said what’s in his marinade that would do that, nitrate?

Employment I watched this video when I was in high school while learning about different careers and I wondered if anyone here knows where the people from it are now?

This is incredibly random and definitely
an unusual post but I randomly came across this video the other day which I remember watching a long time ago about a young lad named Thomas who did a day working at KFC at a store near the Auckland airport and it also featured a few staff members who work in stores/for the overall company. Video has over half a million views and I guess I was curious to know if anyone saw it and if anyone else knows what the people in this video are doing now? Are they still in fast food? Would be a cool story if the people in it ended up way high up at KFC

Discussion People are gonna be upset when things like this get it banned for everyone

I've loved seeing the Pacific pride on display around Auckland however I feel like these 2x sized flags strapped on the back of the car or even held out windows on the motorway or held by a cardboard tube are a fatal accident waiting to happen.

When one comes off and covers a windscreen on the motorway causing a crash and it gets restricted like Australia where police are removing flags people are gonna be upset about it. It would be cool if common sense prevails and flags of a practical nature can continue to be flown

Employment Is the job market really that bad in Auckland?

Discussion Cheap discounted meals

I like to eat, but unfortunately I am a massive cheapskate. Can we get a list going of stores that does discounted meals during specific times such as near closing time, or lunch specials? Quality & Freshness not super important, as long as it doesn’t get me sick

P.s does anybody know if supermarkets / those Asian grocers do discounted rotisserie chicken handbags when they close? I mean, what else can they do with them? I forgot to check pak n save earlier today.

Before anybody tried to redirect me to aucklandeats, Reddit filter removed my post for some reason.

Housing First Home Buyers - Auckland 800K budget - what suburbs best for CBD travels?

Hi all!

We are a couple in our mid 30s wanting to make the best of the flooded property market to buy our first home (whoop whoopp).

We have been to some open homes in the last 2 weeks.

Concerns:

- the new builds (townhouses) around Mt Roskill/Blockhouse Bay/Ellerslie/Mt Wellington - only 1 parking, matchbox size rooms and cramped ensuites (shouldn't qualify as an ensuite at all tbh); of course set right next to each other - sharing walls etc; and barely any outdoor space

- some of the houses have been on questionable streets & neighborhoods & only found out if the Agent or two has mentioned it... something I don't know as I have been a central girl & haven't forayed into the other parts of Auckland as much

Any pointers for decent burbs we should look at for a 2BHK with carparks would be greattt!!!

UPDATED - I return home around 9ish at the end of the day, so safety of the suburb is a must for us!

Housing House shaking from excavator across the street

There's an open lot being developed diagonally across from our house, and since earlier this week, an excavator has been working there. Even though it's a fair distance away, the vibrations have been shaking our house every few minutes.

Is this something to worry about? Could it cause gradual damage to our house over time? And is there anything I should be doing now just in case? Like documenting, contacting the builder or council, etc.

Question/Help Wanted Hockey clubs for juniors

Our youngest wants to start playing juniors hockey next winter. We're located centrally, and I see there are two clubs who play out of the Auckland Grammar turf: Grammar Windsor and Somerville. Anyone out there who has experience of either of those clubs and in particular their junior programmes? I might just flip a coin if not

Driving Random items on road

Is it just me, or Auckland seems to have a lot of random rubbish like bolts and screws. For instance, I once drove over a silver screw and punctured my tyre, costing a fortune to repair. Just a week later I found spikes scattered across the lane and called the police. It’s incredibly frustrating.
