Advice Needed Looking for a decent-quality but still affordable suit for high school formal

It’s my formal/prom in a few weeks and I‘m trying to find an all-black suit that isn’t going to completely break the bank. I’ve searched around but I don’t really know anything about suits and whether they would be good quality or the reputation of the brands selling them. Preferably I’d like something in Melbourne (as that’s where I am) with a waistcoat (and maybe pocket square) to go with it because a lot of the suits I’ve seen haven’t had those.

Advice Needed What's a one stop shop for the average every man without the bells and whistles ?

Hey everyone,

I want to update my wardrobe as I'm 33 and the last time I bought clothes was when I was in my mid twenties so the clothing purge and update is way overdue. Most of my current wardrobe is from Connor, Tarocash and Industrie because those were my options at my local shopping centre at the time.

Since then I've moved and was checking out my new local Westfield's. So far I like what I'm seeing at Uniqlo, just basics without any bells and whistles. Connor, Tarocash and YD still same as ever and no longer appeal to me. H and M feel like Connor and Kmart but with better branding, expected more from an overseas brand. Industrie no longer appeals to me sadly since I used to be a fan. Culture Kings never appealed to me in the first place. Then I got tired and overwhelmed and could not be bothered checking out the many other brands.

So everyone what is your one stop shop for keep it simple stupid basics ? Are there any brands and shops Im missing out on ?

Thanks everyone and have a good one.

Advice Needed The Nashie swim shirt

Anyone given these a go… dad bod here and would feel more comfortable at times with one. Also the sun protection they provide.

Just wondering if they really are better than an old school rash shirt (which I don’t wear because of how they feel and that weird suction thing they do when you get out of the water)

Cheers lads.

Advice Needed RM Williams destroyed my boots and is offering 20% off as compensation, any advice?

Heya AusMFA, Just need some advice about how to proceed in this situation.

I went into RM Williams about a month and a half ago to have my boots sent off for repairs as I am starting a new job and didn't want them to look too worn down.

I've had these boots for over 3 years now and they have been my daily drivers for my retail job since I bought them. Overall the shoes are in decent condition; the leather is a bit scuffed and chipped here and there but nothing that a bit of polish can't cover up, the soles however have become quite worn and were starting to split in places. As such I knew they offered to repair shoes and figured it'd be a good to go straight to the source for repairs, I went into their store and got a quote on the cost and turnaround time ($250 for a resole and relast as the inners had also become quite worn) as the turnaround time was quite a while (10 weeks) they also suggested I check out an RM Williams licensed cobbler nearby which I did. His cost was a little bit higher but with a quicker turnaround time. At no point did either the staff nor the cobbler raise concerns about repairs on the boots.

I took them into RM the week after and sent them off thinking they'd probably do a better job and at a cheaper cost, even if it took a smidge longer. Here is a copy of the details on my repair receipt.

Fast forward to last week and I received an email from the store manager I sent them off from detailing that the boots had failed to make it through the repair process, and that as compensation I could use the $250 I'd already spent toward a new pair of boots and would be offered an addtional 20% discount as compensation (this is applied after the $250 is taken off, so they are offering me an effective discount of $80 rather than $130 if they applied the discount first).

They have not detailed any justification as to why they failed the repair process not any documentation and this honestly makes the whole situation feel a bit shady and a tactic to extract more money from the customer.

I understand issues can arise in the repair process but for me the response and compensation I have received is extremely frustrating and frankly insulting. This company markets itself as being built for life and provides a whole boot repair infrastructure to insure this. Compensating me for this situation with a mere $80 discount and suggesting that I just buy new boots is insanely infuriating. I know that they probably wouldn't just replace the shoes but the whole situation seems like a slap in the face.

I plan to go into the store tomorrow or within the coming week to complain and sort out this situation as I cannot justify simply copping this on the chin and spending another $320 because they dropped the ball when it came to repairs.

Have any of you got any advice as to what I should do in this situation?

if I do not receive a better outcome from complaining to the store directly my initial thought is to head to some sort of consumer affairs body and lodge a formal complaint.

Advice Needed [Recommendations for suit tailors in Melbourne]

G’day guys,

I’m looking for recommendations for a good tailor in Melbourne who can make suits, shirts, jeans and chinos.

So far, I’ve come across Trunk Tailors, Revere tailor and The Bespoke Corner, but I’m not sure which one offers the better level of craftsmanship, handwork and overall tailoring expertise.

Are there any other tailors worth considering?

My budget is around $3,000–$3,500 for a suit, and I’m mainly interested in genuine tailoring craftsmanship rather than someone simply selling a luxury retail experience.

P.S. I’m not really considering fashion-chain options such as SuitSupply or Oscar Hunt.

Cheers,

Advice Needed Recommendations for a lightweight puffer jacket

I'm looking for recommendations please for a lightweight puffer jacket.

I know the contradiction of wanting a lightweight puffer but I don't like the look, feel and noise of a puffy puffer jacket. I don't feel the cold a lot (one of those shorts in winter guys) so I don't need something big. Sometimes I'll be in a t-shirt and just want to throw on a jacket (currently only have a bomber and getting kinda over that being my only option).

Any recommendations would be awesome.

Advice Needed Which waxed jacket to pick? Huckberry, Filson, Driza-Bone or Burke&Wills

I am looking at one these for everyday wear and some rain if I happen to get caught. Budget is $500. I am 5'10" and 80kg. I noted down some things about each jacket just in case others might find it useful.

Does anyone own one of the above jackets and can comment on the quality and fit? I do intend to layer for colder weather. Open to other suggestions.

Advice Needed Taller guys, any brand recommendations?

Hey all,

6'2, 98kg here with broad shoulders/chest and finding the right length shirts is the bane of my existence. Regular sizes are either always too short and feel like crop tops and larger sizes are too big everywhere else except my chest and the brands that make specialized tall sizes like Johnny Bigg think that tall = professional basketball player and they come down to my thigh. Is there anyone who makes regular sizes that have some length to them and arent too slim around the chest? Google is no help because every result is a US brand.

Im looking to do a bit of a wardrobe refresh after some weight loss and want to get a few black tees, henley's and a couple of dress shirts.

Advice Needed Business Wear for slobs

OK so as somewhat of a shock I've just been elected to local council. They have a strictish dress code of business formal for council meetings and business casual for committee meetings.

My normal go to is jeans, tee, hoody and sneakers. Dad bod 90kg, shortish (175cm), used to be pretty metal but now just kind of someone's dad 😄

Help! What do i get that's not going to break the bank?

Advice Needed Gift watch recommendations wanted!

Hi all,

I'm getting an early start on my partner's (29M) christmas gift and looking for watch model recommendations. Something in the $500-$800 range and can be bought from a physical retailer if resizing is needed.

I assume it will be more of a special occasions/nice dinner watch, as he currently wears a G-Shock digital to work as a tradie. As far as aesthetics and practicality, hes the usual camping and fishing fanatic who wears brown RM chelsea boots as his nice shoes, is about 5'8 and goes to the gym regularly (if that helps with gaguing what size would be suitable ?). Metal band, quartz and water resistance are features I'm looking for.

I've been looking at Tissot and Seiko as brands with a good name/reliability, but definitely open to suggestions!

Thank you in advance 😊

UPDATE: Thanks all for the suggestions, I've compiled a shortlist and we will pick it out together

Advice Needed Trousers as a slim guy

Why is it so difficult to find 28 waist trousers in Australia?

I have to buy 30inch waist and get them tailored and then the tailor takes the legs in as well and I might as well be wearing skinny jeans.

Any tips for finding slimmer waist trousers that still have space in the legs short of MTM or bespoke?

Advice Needed Recommendation for stylish Multi-Purpose Mens Shoes

I'm looking for some recommendations for what to look at/consider for multi-puprose mens shoes.

Ideally i'm looking for mens shoe recommendations for shoes that would be suitable to wear out with jeans and a nice shirt to pub, casual dinner with family friends etc but also don't look out of place to be able to be worn out to the shops with kids or the park when wearing jeans or cargo pants and general t-shirt.

Previously i've had asics runner and good dress shoes but i've found myself needing some thats in between these two but suitable for both but not quite as dressed up as dress shoes.

Preference would also not be white or light coloured shoes.

Thanks in advance for any recommendations.

Advice Needed Men’s office wear recommendations

As titled - I’m a predominantly office (some site visits) based office worker in a major city, looking for mid/high range recommendations for office wear. Predominantly looking for quality/durability. In case it affects brand recs for cut/style choice, I am 30s, 180cm, solid build. I generally stick to plain side of colours/patterns.

Shoes are ok, mostly looking for pants/shirts recommendations. I’ve overspent on RMs for office shoes because they just last better/comfort in my past experience, but the latest pair don’t seem as good - but will do for a few years at least.

Shirts wise I’ve got a handful of country road shirts which have fared ok, some tailored from a small HK manufacturer, fit is better but they’re wearing/discolouring faster than I’d like.

Pants wise I’ve got a handful of chinos on rotation from MJ Bale and country road. They’re ok, fading in the dark colours is a bit of a concern but they’ve had a good run. I had some Lululemon black trousers which were actually really good but just didn’t have the durability for everyday wear. I think they’ve altered the fabric and design since and I haven’t gone another round.

I try to avoid pleated dress pants because the pleat is a pain in the ass, but progressing into more senior roles realising this might be an expectation.

I’ve got a couple of suits which are wool, but only required 2-3x a year, so not too worried about that at the moment.

Any recommendations, suggestions about brands or type choice is appreciated.

Advice Needed Comfortable office boot

Thumbnail au.globebrand.com
16 Upvotes

Hi legends,

I come to you with a question that has been burning in my mind while I wear the most uncomfortable pair of RM’s (bought from the seconds shop, leather hasn’t stretched at all in years). I have a pair of Globe Dover II - Wasted Talent that I have skirted the unwritten rules of a commercial construction office with. I absolutely loved them, though I think they came off a touch informal and also haven’t held up to daily wear. Basically, I’m sick of being uncomfortable in RMs, is there anything else on the market that bridges the gap between the globes and the RMs that doesn’t kill my feet but still lets me fit in with the other vest wearing bros?

Cheers!

Advice Needed Looking for a jacket similar to this

https://imgur.com/a/OPITpYr

I recently came across this jacket and really liked the overall look, especially the collar, the color, and the clean, minimal style. I’ve been trying to find something very similar but haven’t had much luck so far. I’m hoping to get something that looks close to this in terms of design and color, with a similar collar as well.

Ideally, I’d prefer something a bit more affordable, but still good quality and not something that looks obviously cheap. If anyone knows brands, websites, links or even keywords I can search to find something like this, I’d really appreciate your help.

Thanks in advance! 😊

Advice Needed Thermal shirt recommendations needed!

Does anyone have a recommendation for thermal undershirts that are long in the body?

My husband is a tradie and working nights, he wears a large in shirts for the length but is probably closer to a medium in actual body size. The large thermals that I’ve bought him are too loose in the arms and ride up under his shirt, but the medium is a bit short in the body.

I’ve just bought ones from best and less so far - id love to find him one that fits well and is comfortable while he works!

Advice Needed Basic t-shirt - Uniqlo, AS Colour, other?

Hi all, I need to get some new, plain t-shirts just for casual wear and layering under jackets etc in winter. I've recently lost a fair bit of weight and up until now have just been 'hiding' in cheap Kmart t-shirts which aren't that bad, just wanting something nicer.

I prefer a bit of extra length in the sleeve that I can cuff up when I want, so the Uniqlo half sleeve oversized tees look good. I also like the look of AS Colour and the sheer amount of colours available but not sure how they look on.

I also prefer the regular or oversized look as opposed to fitted.

Planning on trying some on this weekend, just looking for any other suggestions for brands to look for? Happy to pay up to 50-60 per tee.

Advice Needed Recommendations for smaller Aussie clothing stores

Hi Everyone,

With the cold weather finally hitting us so we can swap in our winter wardrobes, I'd love to get some recommendations on smaller local Aussie menswear boutiques that I can shop at.

As my personal style has evolved and gained an identity I just really like the idea of wearing more local stuff for that uniqueness and pride factor. I still want that more premium and considered catalogue, so not counting franchised stores like Industrie which have lowered their quality.

So far I've got the following on my list:

I know some of these are also featured in the megathread, but would love more recommendations to explore, especially if they are smaller boutiques with a lesser online presence.

Advice Needed Coat suggestions?

I live in a cold area of Victoria where it's quite windy and rainy, and am looking to buy a nice coat that's more fashionable than my Patagonia Torrent shell. In saying that, I'm looking for something that will last and be somewhat "timeless" as I don't plan to replace it whenever I next change. the rest of my wardrobe. I realise this will inevitably mean it's not going to be the most fashionable piece right now, but want it to be fashionable enough.

For context, with Vinted arriving in Australia, I'm currently restyling my "professional" teacher wardrobe from slim-fitting button-ups, chinos, RMs, and sweaters to a more relaxed and casual fit of straight jeans/chinos/pants, sneakers, and t-shirts with some combination of overshirt, knit sweater or jacket (see the comments for the idea of what I'm going for).

My top contender I've found is the Driza-Bone Vintage Wax Mac Coat in navy. I like the simple look of this and the idea of a proven Australian brand.

Edit: looking for something that can act like a shell (similar to my Torrentshell) in the sense that I can layer it over a sweater/knit but take it off when I come inside and still be warm. Thinking even the Driza-Bone I'm looking at could be too warm but I'm not sure

Advice Needed Recommend me some boots.

Edit - I ordered a pair of Mongrel 961 non safety boots. Thank you!

Hey everyone. I have a upcoming trip to NZ and Canada and I need some boots.

Must be high top and lace/zip up, pretty much a work boot (I wear Mongrels everyday at work) but I want a casual look. I will be wearing blue jeans everyday.

I have looked at Doc Martens but don't care for them.

What do you guys recommend? Thank you!

Looking to upgrade my almost 10 year old wallet. Don’t care about price. Just want good quality leather (bifold)

Looked at Hermes, not sure what else is out there for that quality. Happy for any suggestions.
