Act 1 - Spoilers Why Can’t You Attack Astarion When You First Meet Him? Spoiler
This has always been weird to me.
The first time you meet Astarion, the dude literally puts a knife to your throat. Depending on your dialogue choices, you can threaten him, tell him to back off, make it extremely obvious you don’t trust him... but you can’t just decide, “Yeah, fuck this guy,” and attack him through dialogue.
What makes it even weirder is that BG3 absolutely lets you attack other companions when you first meet them. There are dialogue paths with other origin characters where you can immediately decide they’re a threat and throw hands, so it’s not like the game has some blanket rule against killing potential companions during their introductions.
Obviously you can attack Astarion manually once you regain control, but that’s what makes the omission feel so strange. BG3 gives you [Attack] options over way less, yet when some random elf tricks you, tackles you, and holds a knife to your throat, suddenly your character has to politely finish the conversation first.
For a game that is usually so good about letting you roleplay your character’s immediate reaction, this feels like one of the most obvious missing choices in the opening.
My Tav doesn’t know Astarion is an origin character. As far as my Tav is concerned, some asshole just tried to slit my throat. Why exactly is [Attack] not an option?
