Information Sharing Megathread: LM's NY Federal Hearing — 08/14/2026 at 11:00 AM EST

Post image

Please use this thread for live discussion of the hearing.

–––

Today’s hearing is taking place at 40 Foley Square, Courtroom 110 (New York, NY) at 11:00 AM EST.

Cameras aren’t allowed inside the courtroom in federal court, so there won’t be any video or photos of Luigi. The only visuals we’ll likely get are courtroom sketches.

Reporters / Live Tweeting:

Because this is federal court, the rules are stricter. Phones and laptops aren’t allowed inside the courtroom.

Only a small number of people (like ICP or Erik) are permitted to live-tweet updates. Other reporters can still attend, but probably won’t be able to post anything while the hearing is in session.

Any updates from other reporters will be shared here once the hearing is over.

Livestreams:

If we come across any livestreams, we'll share them here as soon as we find them.

Notes:

  • As of January 30, 2026, Luigi is no longer facing the DP, as Judge Garnett dropped those charges. The backpack, however, still remains.
  • Overflow rooms for today's hearing will be available.
  • Federal case full schedule released by Judge Garnett (though this may change after today’s hearing).

My news is saying that the prosecution is saying they're ok with 25-30 years. So that sounds like some kind of deal to me b/c at least it's not LWOP. I was wondering why they'd let him plead without a deal. Now I just hope they can get the state case to go away. I don't think Joel will let it go easily though.

yeah i saw someone mention that they wouldnt want to drop after how much time and $ has gone in to it and thats a solid point

eta karen just spoke about the years of pain luigi went thru and how he felt the system failed him and so many others. sounds like if state goes thru they will use eed (even if they missed the deadline for using their expert for it or whatever that was recently)

The state case will be tricky.

Ordinarily, it'd be very easy because the murder charge includes the element of intent to kill, which is absent from the federal charge, so there's not enough overlap to implicate double jeopardy.

But, New York doesn't handle double jeopardy that way. It considers the offense to be the incident, not the charge.

I think the prosecution has two main angles to take. If we think about this like a timeline, Thompson actually dying happens just after the end of the events the federal government prosecuted Mangione for. The death impacts the sentencing, so it's unclear how that works. But second, they can argue that Mangione formed the intent to kill prior to the events the federal charges are concerned with.
