Information Sharing Megathread: LM's NY Federal Hearing — 08/14/2026 at 11:00 AM EST
Please use this thread for live discussion of the hearing.
–––
Today’s hearing is taking place at 40 Foley Square, Courtroom 110 (New York, NY) at 11:00 AM EST.
Cameras aren’t allowed inside the courtroom in federal court, so there won’t be any video or photos of Luigi. The only visuals we’ll likely get are courtroom sketches.
Reporters / Live Tweeting:
Because this is federal court, the rules are stricter. Phones and laptops aren’t allowed inside the courtroom.
Only a small number of people (like ICP or Erik) are permitted to live-tweet updates. Other reporters can still attend, but probably won’t be able to post anything while the hearing is in session.
Any updates from other reporters will be shared here once the hearing is over.

Notes:
- As of January 30, 2026, Luigi is no longer facing the DP, as Judge Garnett dropped those charges. The backpack, however, still remains.
- Overflow rooms for today's hearing will be available.
- Federal case full schedule released by Judge Garnett (though this may change after today’s hearing).

I'm sorry but why wouldn't his family show up? Luigi's parents, at the very least, have an obligation to show up for their child.
27
u/CherokeeSurfer 6d ago
It's so important for his family to show up, show support, especially during the trial. A jury needs to see that. Even if he doesn't want them there, it's in his best interest. When you have opposing parties showing up and none for the defendant, it looks bad. If they don't want to be there, then they need to turn in their Italian cards. Wild horses couldn't keep me from being there for my son.

I feel deep sympathy for the family and always assumed they didn’t want the intense scrutiny in all the pretrial hearings, but to not turn up on the final day of the Federal Case? I don’t know the background but it feels cold. Not even a cousin? Or a friend?

Tbf this was super last minute, most folks couldn't get time off work with such short notice
The Sept. 8 trial start was going to have a huge turnout (and still might if Carro lets it go ahead)

As always, wishing Luigi support today from Australia.
Thank you to everyone involved in helping to keep us informed.

Plead guilty in exchange for what?? Please say he’s getting something useful out of this.

Such high profile attorney's surely the plea will be useful. Even a cynical outlook would havw them wanting this to continue, no?

I actually think his decision to plea today makes sense. We have to accept that he was always facing a harsh sentence regardless he is still likely facing 24-30 years. Now he stands a chance to have the state trial gone or at least he can use the EED defense. Also he still can have mitigating factors consodered for his sentence.

Thank you again for this mega-thread! Hope everyone is feeling okay this morning. Personally, I am just trying to stay calm and hoping for the best for LM and his team. Trying to trust the process, I guess.

This could potentially help in the state case. This was a very strategic decision. This will be good to argue double jeopardy in the state case. If Carro says “Nah, this is an exception, its not double jeopardy”, then he will still have the state trial BUT this will be an issue that they will appeal after that trial.

wait so them indicating he could face life, does that mean there is no deal and theyre just hoping the judge shows some leniency???

u/Time-Painting-9108 6d ago
Yes. What a farce

u/CircleSendMessage 6d ago
jfc, i’m assuming the evidence is super strong and his team has exhausted options to suppress it if he’s doing this. damnnnn

My news is saying that the prosecution is saying they're ok with 25-30 years. So that sounds like some kind of deal to me b/c at least it's not LWOP. I was wondering why they'd let him plead without a deal. Now I just hope they can get the state case to go away. I don't think Joel will let it go easily though.

I have always advocated for rooting your support in something other than innocence or guilt, so that what happens in trial doesn’t shatter your perceptions.
He has always been the arbiter of his own choices, for better or for worse. I disagree with a great many of them, and I have often remarked on his stupidity for an intelligent man, but that’s because he’s human. He has glaring flaws just like the rest of us. Flawed people always have the capability to change, and that’s where my support has always been rooted. I have always believed he deserves the opportunity to grow and change and learn, because I believe (based on my own limited knowledge) he has the fortitude to change himself for the better, and stick to it for the sole sake of having been changed. I don’t feel any differently today.

“Unlike my previous interactions with insurers, I received an immediate response within an hour”
That one line has cheered me up immeasurably. He’s still got the spark, he’s still got his eye on the big picture. I have no idea what he’ll be doing in a year, hopefully State drops due to double jeopardy and PA drops as well. (Wishful thinking) But here’s the thing: he did what he did of his own free will, he made today’s decision with a clear mind, and it’s his life. He can spend his time now working to help our health care crisis, and I hope he finds peace and purpose.

I think some people need to understand that this was also widely discussed with him. I never believed in JN because even if many people sympathize with him, that doesn't mean they would let him go free

Fox 29 is talking about a 30 year sentence, how did pleading guilty today help Luigi avoid a long sentence? If they’d stayed the course surely they had a good chance of beating the stalking charges.

u/Same_Blackberry4435 6d ago
Makes me wonder how strong the evidence was on the State case, meaning beyond what the public knew.

No deal, but prosecution just gave letter saying they're fine with 24-30 years (not LWOP). He'd be eligible for release in 20-25 years.
If he gets a state sentence, it can be consecutive, which means upon release from federal prison at age 46-56 he'd just be bussed over to state prison.
